I have someone wanting to trade a mini mauser action for a couple blanks and duplication.

Don't own one. Hadn't thought of getting one recently but price probably makes sense since I cut myself a deal on labor. Wink

I believe it is a 223 head action. Trying to get some more info. But assuming it was yours what would you build? I have a couple bolt 223 and 2 ARs. But won't rule out another

Paul, I would look really hard at a 6 X 45. Same bolt head as it is a .223/5/56 case necked to 6MM, and everything I have loaded for my AR in that caliber has been MOA or less.

Man I had forgotten about the 6x45. Guess with a touch of bolt work the 6.8 would work as well. Haven't fired a 221 since early 70s in a then new XP100.

Paul I have a Mini Mauser in .223 and I must say it is a tack driver and easy to carry around, on the downside the bolt handle is tiny and I'm going to change mine out for something I can get a couple fingers on. The stock needs to be re shaped as well but no problem for a man of your skills. If you must change from .223 the 6x45 or 6x47 would be great, I would prefer to use the plethora of .223 brass available and an advantage with that over the .223 is that it is legal for Colorado Deer and Antelope and .223 isn't.
Just my $.02!
I have a Mini Mauser in 7.62x39 that shoots cheap Wolf ammo into 2" groups but I can't get it to like "my" loads better than 4", oh well I'm an idiot.

I had a pristine Interarms mini-mauser purchased with the idea of making a 6mm-223 or .300 Blackout for my daughter. She came out for a visit and I put a Leupold scope and Harris bi-pod on it. Then we took it out to sight it in and to see how its size, weight, and dimensions worked out for her. Once the scope was zeroed we started shooting three shot groups with breaks in between to let it cool down. I would never have imagined it would perform as well as it did. We put three 52gr hollow points into dime sized groups at 100 yards again and again. Needless to say, my daughter was delighted and it remains a .223 to this day.

I have one and mine is in6 X 45....great cartridge....mine is 1:14 twist mostly for lighter bullets......

A friend has one and has broken an extractor....the gun is dead in the water as he is unable to get a replacement extractor.....

I won't buy another one until I find that parts are available.....this is a deal killer IMO

vapodog,

What COAL do you use for yours. I have three of the actions and the magazine box limits me to 2.227 which is why I chose the 6mmx222 over the 6x45. I seemed like I'd have to seat the bullet awfully deep in the 6x45 to fit the magazine. Did you have the magazine box lengthened?

I had one of the actions barreled to 17 Remington but need to get it in a stock. The 6mmx222 is in an MPI stock. The third action is still in the white and awaiting my decision on a cartridge choice.

I just remembered. One of the factory offerings for the mini-mauser was in .22-250. If the little rifle was made for a .473" based case then why couldn't it be chambered in something like 6mm Benchrest Remington?

I also love the 6x45. Mine is on a L-461 Sako action. I have owned that gun for 30 years and it works on varmints in wind conditions real well and it a great deer and antelope calber with loaded properly and kept within a couple of hundred yards.

I went .223 but with a fast twist barrel.

The 6X45 sounds pretty nice too.

Grenadier,

Yup, I've got a pencil-thin 20" barreled L/H Mini-Mauser in 22-250. Thought it would be a success story for Roe Deer but occaisionally more of a better thing turns out to be nil gain.

Too much muzzle blast with the short tube (Wow!), you can fry eggs on the barrel after three shots and it's tough on the delicate Roe Deer carcass (literally both sides of the deer blood-shot).

I considered options as a target-grade medium stiff barrel in 6BR or some such lovely exotic too; but then again the rifle is more suited to "light" virtues than attempting to make it "heavy" - or at least that's my reasoning; which may not float everyone else's boat.

Net, I'm in the process of ordering a .308" barrel and will have it turned to a 22" #1 contour and chambered for the 300 Savage.

It'll take a bit of tweaking from my Master German Gunsmith to ensure the magazine is right but I've every intention of turning mine into an ultra-light 300 Savage sporter. Yeah, unless Florian can work magic with the magazine I may be limited to lighter 95-130 grain spitzers and round nosed 150 grain bullets but for my intentions I can live within these parameters.

Cheers,

hi paul,

I have built them for clients in 221 fireball, 223,17 Remington, 6mm tcu and as you assumed with a little bolt face and extractor work a 6.8 spc. they make nice little rifles with a bit of smoothing up.

richj, That is a nice looking pattern. Exactly what I was thinking on the butt. I had thoughts of a Schnabel on the front. But, early thoughts. coffee

Anyone else have extractor issues or concerns? Hate to go to the work and not be able to get a part in the future.

Thanks guys for the options. don't think I need another 223 but there are plenty of other great options.

Now I have to wait and see if he was window shopping me. Wink

That is the pattern James Anderson made for a Mini Mauser he and Shane Thompson built for me a few years back. It's patterned off a W.J. Jeffery Mauser I fell in love with some years back. I had pictures and sent them to him. I said "just like that and add a cheek piece." He is a master!

Here's mine.

I'm assuming that shroud safety is no longer available. Frowner

Looking at that stock reminds me why some people are artist and some people are craftsman. I can copy with the best of them. It would take me days and 25 redos to pull that design together.

Can't imagine why someone would want to waste that project on a 7.62. You just need to send it west. rotflmo

HeHe, those safety's never were available. James Anderson did those for me using a Dakota M98 safety. He did a write up on it on the gunsmithing forum. It sounded complicated.

That stock started life as a Great American Gunstock pattern with a schnable tip. It went through a few versions before it took it's latest shape. If I knew what I was doing I'd be dangerous. Right now it's just comical.

Don't even want to think about converting a 98 shroud to mini. WAY above my pay grade.

I need to check with Chris and see what patterns he ended up with from GAG. Might be easier to start with one of their old patterns.

richj,
I have a min pattern but it is more along the lines of the factory. Playing whit what combinations of patterns I already have I could splice and come up with a keeper. Of course always easier if I could find the 90% answer and change it.

If I'm building it more myself I might as well end up with a nice pattern to use for future duplication business.

I have one of the older style with out a bolt guide and one with. If it was reasonable I would rebarrel and share one bolt between two guns.

My Mini was a standard .223 from interarms and the only bullet I shoot is the Hornady 70 grain SX so it's fairly short.

It never was a thought to shoot the longer bullets as there just didn't seem to be powder capacity to launch them at a reasonable speed. For this reason, I've not had a problem with the COAL.

I've not done it but the 55 grain Nosler BT would make a fine varminter.

I used the 70 grain bullet in Minnesota to get around the law requiring a .230 or larger diameter bullet and it has killed deer quite well. The sx bullet from Hornady is a fine bullet at the speeds generated by the smaller case.

Thanks for the offer but my friend is only interested in a new extractor.....I keep telling him that I'll make a small production run of them but so far it hasn't hit my priotity list.

It really miffs me that people can continue to sell new ones but can't come up with critical parts for them.....what gives here?

I've got three mini actions, one of each size BF. One for me and one for each kid. Life has gotten in the way of progress but my plan is to do each as a switch barrel. One for deer, one for varmints and they will probably end up as .223/300BLK, 22 or 6mmPPC/7.62x39, and 22-250/30BR. Several other fun calibers to play with available too. The wood is drying in the basement, even more than it has the last 20 years. They won't be near as pretty as the ones above. I just hope I can get them done before my boy is ready for the 300 Win mag....
