Paul, there is a lot to recommend the 358 Gremlin, especially in a bolt action rifle, but if you want to consider that round, there are some things you need to know. I have been "fooling around" with that cartridge on the AR platform for better than a year, and there is a lot I can tell you, both good and bad.

If you are interested, send me a PM...

I bought a left-hand mauser-mini barreled action in .223 a few years ago. The deal included a turned stock. Then contacted a few gunsmiths in my part of Colorado and found none who would open the bolt face to either the Russian case or a .22-250 case. I would like to get a deer/antelope bumming around rifle out of this. Any ideas as to the gunsmith I should go to?

Simply rebarrel it to 6 X 45.....it works quite well on deer.

Either that or work up a .223 load using Barnes TSX's.

Any reasons? Zastava makes a 22-250 mini mauser.

I'm just going on memory here but I recall that Mini parts are not easy to get your hands on and was told basically the same thing if you want one based on the larger case head it is far easier to start with one that way.
It can be done but most don't want to take it on with the lack of parts available.
Use the .223 you have as is or make it a 6mm something so its legal for Deer and Antelope in Colorado.
Otherwise look for another Mini with the large bolt face and magazine box already made to feed the fatter rounds.
I'm sure you've talked to Kevin Weaver,(weaverrifles.com) if I recall he recommends the same.
You might want to talk to him if you haven't already.

I've tried to find a left-hand .22-250 mini-mauser to convert to a .250 Savage, but have not had any success. That's why I was considering a wildcat of some sort in 6mm.
Yes, did talk to Kevin Weaver and he also recommended just going to a 6x45. May just have to do that.

I am amazed that you can get 3 or 4 of the 22-250 and some other calibers in the Mini MAUSER magazine and make it feed..I never tried it, but it didn't appear possible to me and didn't seem like there was enough metal in the acion or the magazine..If this is so then it would sure make for a neat little 250-3000.

I could not not do that in the L-461 Sako, not even close.

Well picked up my 7.62x36 new Mini barreled action today. While I decide what to build I guess I need to stick it in a factory stock and play with it.

If you need a loaner. I have factory wood that is unattached for now.

White outline grip cap and pad, rollover. In other words "Classic" :-)

Thanks for the offer. I have one of the factory Laminates I had picked up a year or so ago to use as a pattern. I never got around to setting it up so it will be put to use for the time being.

I have a .250 Savage that Kevin did on a Mini Mauser, only holds two rounds down. I bought it for my daughter to use as a deer rifle, but it has some issues with reliability that I haven't felt comfortable letting her use it yet. I think I can work out most of these issues if I just get time to play with the rifle at the reloading bench, as a lot of it has to deal with COAL. I think as well that Kevin would probably try and talk you out of a .250 Savage on one of these actions because of all the COAL issues.

Still it's a pretty nice rifle, and once I get the kinks worked out I think it'll be quite fun.

Feeding issues mainly with factory .250 Savage being too long for the magazine. Like I said I think I can fix the issues with by working on finding a load with the right COAL. The magazine box is limited so no bullets over 100 grain and then FB bullets will be the best option to keep COAL to a minimum.

It also won't eject a loaded cartridge as the ejection port is too small, I actually have to remove the bolt to take a loaded round from the chamber. The bolt stop broke once and had to be repaired as well as when you worked the bolt it would just pull right out of the action.

The magazine was lengthened to the rear to make room for the longer .250 cartridge. He also opened up the action to the rear as well, but then there is follower issues. The follower can't be made to fit the magazine as then it won't come out the bottom metal. So it's a little small as well as the magazine spring, so things can tip and bind up if you're not careful with loading.

This was one of Kevin's personal rifles and not one I had built. He's been great on fixing the repairs but like I said I think he'd talk a guy out of building a .250 Savage on one of these actions. There is just too much shoe horning that has to happen.

I know this rifle will shoot, I have targets and load data from Kevin. The problem is that I don't have my reloading room set up after a move, and I've taken a promotion at work and the training is eating up all my time. Things should slow down after April and I should get time to play with neglected things.
