Using the A-Square Manuel as food for thought, check it out and you'll see a 2300-2400 FEET PER SECOND .416 Rimmed (which I think is basically the 500/416 Kreighoff cartridge) and, in the 45 caliber group, A-Sq opened the neck of that case to fire .458 diameter bullets at the above velocity, both of these designed to be at acceptable pressures for double rifles, around 40,000 PSI. They DO have thicker rims (.060) than the .470 N E (.035). Other than that, they seem to be .470 N E brass - just a tiny bit longer. My question is, CAN ONE USE ACTUAL .470 NE BRASS, SIZE IT TO THE PROPORTIONS DETAILED BY A-SQAURE FOR THE .458 CALIBERED VERSION OF THIS IMPROVED CARTRIDGE, OF COURSE SIZING THE NECK TO ACCEPT THE .475 DIAMETER BULLET, THEREBY CREATING A 2300-2400 FEET PER SECOND ROUND (.500 grain bullet)AT SUITABLE PRESSURES FOR A DOUBLE RIFLE, WITH THE SUPER ADVANTAGE OF BEING ABLE TO SAFELY FIRE REGULAR .470 NE ROUNDS IN THIS SAME RIFLE, (given, they WON'T be regulated unless by a miracle) AND ONE COULD JUST DESIGNATE THIS NEW ROUND .470 NEI (the I indicating IMPROVED) THIS WOULD MEAN EXISTING .470 NE BRASS HEADSTAMPS COULD BE EASILY MODIFIED BY THE AMATURE HANDLOADER AT HOME BY JUST STAMPING AN 'I' ONTO THE EXISTING HEADSTAMP AND THIS WOULD ELIMINATE ANY PROBLEMS TAKING SUCH A CARTRIDGE INTO AFRICA, AS WE ALL KNOW SOME PLACES ARE STRICT ABOUT HEADSTAMPS ON AMMO? Plus there is great availability of .470 NE brass and there are many bullets to choose from. You expert wildcatters are requested to "kick this around PLEASE" http://www.z-hat.com are you out there?

BFJ,
the 416 asquare, 416 rimmed, 500/416, and 416 (sometimes 500/416) champuis are all the same round.

Yes, you could improve a 470 NE... or order a searcy, have butch regulate it for 2300 and keep going...

BUT..

the 500/416 is high pressure, for a double... its mid 40Kpsi, just like a rigby, and is the TOP for pressure in a double.

if you ran the 470 at 44kpsi that would give you 2300+ (just ran in quickload) and no need for new brass, dies, and an unsaleable rifle.

then again, you don't hear complaints about 500 .475 at 2150
