I've built a 416 on an 06 based case. With a .46" shoulder it would headspace fine. I would go a 421 and headspace on the mouth if I wanted largest dia. The 411 makes a great round on the 06 case. I love mine better than I did the 416 version. The cases one in from each side is my 400PDK(.411) 300gr and 400gr. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

There have been several versions of a 44-06 or 444 Marlin Rimless, headspacing on the case mouth. Bruce

The largest with minimal taper is the .435 bullet used for the 425 WR I mused about this a couple years ago. None ever built. The 404 (.423") makes more sense and the 425 Fossdal is the best .423" version but belted 06 case. I like the 400 PDK better than the 400 Whelen but I like nostalgia too. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. Ramrod has the fine 400 PDK, a great 411 wildcat. I went with the 400 Whelen because I am a Whelen fanatic and the 400 Whelen scratches that nostalgic itch. Both are fine rounds and take the 06 case about as far as it can effectively go. Mart "...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." Nothing wrong with the Whelen. I built my 416PDK with a 280 case. I used the cylinder brass on my 400 so I could maximize my net capacity and still use a cannelure. A Whelen loaded to the same oal as my 400 wouldn't give up much velocity. Besides the Whelen wouldn't be a brother to my other PDKs. The Whelen was simply given a bad rap over the years by people that didn't have the correct story on the case. Besides think how dull it would be if we all shot the same thing. Nothing to agrue abour around the campfire. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Paul, My next build is going to be the 38 Whelen (375 Whelen). I have the 35 and 400 and need the middle brother. I am going to have it labeled 38 Whelen because that was the original designation for it. Development stopped on the 38 when Winchester discontinued the bullets the good Colonel was using. Imagine the angst some gun fancier will have 75 years down the road when he comes across my old 38 Whelen in some shop. He and the shop owner will scratch their heads in wonder and confusion. A 375-400 Whelen would be cool. Same taper and shoulder as the 400. The 38 Whelen is such a cool cart. http://www.finegunmaking.com/p...3/page51/page51.html 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. (Founder)

Like Boom said I sure prefer building one that is a 375-400Whelen. I build a 380PDK. Started in a 280 case the cylinder brass and now 380Howell brass. Left to right are 375 Whelen, 380PDK (280case) 380PDK using cylinder brass then the 380Howell case. While the baSIC whelen will sure work. The improved case not only looks cool but adds good velocity. With 260s I match my 375H&H velocities. The 260Accubond is perfect for that size case. Wayne at AHR does the 380Howell chamber as well as sells, dies, proper headstamp brass and even ammo I believe. Hornady has the dimensions for the 380Pdk dies on file. If you want a 38 Whelen then I would go the 375-400 case. Other than that it is a 375Whelen and why confuse the future owner. As usual just my $.02 Paul K
