I got a friend in north Texas that has told me some hard to believe info on this wildcat. Wanted to know if any of it is true. 50 degree shoulder on a RUM case. 3850 fps on a 168gr and still supersonic at 2800yds.

Is the velocity true? that would be crazy!!

Inquiring minds want to know!!

In a word No. Unless I'm realling missing something a 30-378 is far larger than anything you can do with a Rum case. Wby calls it 3500 with a 165. Loadtech says It could be done with a 30-378 with 130grs of 8700 and a 35" barrel. Even if you take a Sierra match bullet for high BC it is subsonic at around half that distance.

About 7 or 8 years ago i had 2 longrange rifles in my shop to bed. One had been chambered in 338/378 Wby., and the other in 300/378 Wby., both had 50 degree shoulders. I asked the owner if he ever had trouble with collapsing shoulders. He replied "No". When he brought me a couple of "dummy" rounds, for my collection, both cases had severely dimpled and cracked shoulders. There was indication of fire-splitting of the shoulder. I believe that anything over 40 degrees is "running on the edge".

From a RUM Case...???

NO WAY !!
See to compare a .300Lapua Mag :

168grs. SMK moly
88,4grs. VV-N-160
34" BBL
will give you 3491 fps. OK.....

BUT thats at the max. allowed Pressure of that Case....68168psi ( lot higher than RUM´S )

I ´don´t know if it would be possible at max. proove-house pressure at about 88.000psi, but two things for shure :
poor barrel life,
and one-shot-cases

Best

If you have a folding chrono, and make it 1" from flat, you can certainly get a couple FPS faster...

3800 fps? Not even from a BMG case.. and no CONVENTIONAL bullets would survive leaving the barrel...

but, of course, thos enumbers are from someone without a chrono, adding on to someone else's misremembered figures, and of course, a self guiding bullet that has never failed to drop 160+ BC points off a hog

Thanks for the info gang. My friend has sometimes more money than sense, and I hate to see him get taken. I have seen some extraordinary velocities from RBCD ammo, but with light for caliber projectiles and would expect them to lose velocity rapidly.
