I am looking into a wildcat using a standard length action and a 375 barrel. I checked my sources and could not find anything on one using inexpensive brass ie:338 Win Mag. Am sure I read of one once apon a time. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Yep, got one. It's on a M70 PF with a 21" barrel. Been handloading it for 4-5 years now. Mostly a one bullet pony - 300 gr partitions. Some 270 grain bullets too.

I believe that round is usually referred to as the .375 Chatfield-Taylor, or something like that. It will duplicate .375 H&H ballistics in a standard-length action.

Mine was built on a M1999 action, 23" Shilen #4 barrel, Borden Rimrock stock. It will send a 260-270g bullet comfortably downrange over 2700fps. Groups around 1 inch all day long. Brass is easily formed from .338 WM. You can have mine if you can pry it out of my cold, dead fingers.....

Thanks for the info guys, I am still pondering the 375 ackley improved vs 375 taylor. Both seem to produce H&H or very near velocities, so which would you choose and why ????

Both are wildcats so dies and reamers will be deciding factors probably. My situation is I am lefthanded and am looking for a left hand remington or savage action to barrel. I am working on a 416 taylor from a savage 110 LH, and have a 375 a&b barrel on order. Thanks for the advise.

One shouldn't assume that wildcat means "no way is it available without special order and a hassle".. that's in days long before the internet, and we have ability to have exactly the same datum

I've been really enjoying shooting mt 375 Whelen AI (Shilen #3 23" barrel on a 98 VZ-24). I'm getting 2550 with the 260 Accubond using 56.5 g H4895 (no pressure signs at all) and it's a true 1" gun even with a fixed 3x scope. I form brass from winchester '06 cases (cheap) in one pass over a redding tapered expander and fireform. It's about 150 fps slower than the 375 Taylor but I get 5 down and it is a pleasure to shoot. Dies were $100, Redding. You might also consider the 375 Hawk, same ballistics but headstamped brass is available (not sure of its quality). Reamers are readily available.

The cheap option would be, as Jeffe said, the 376 Steyr. Brass is cheap as are dies and it looks to be a great round, you'd have to do some bolt and rail work on a standard action---my Whelen feeds like a dream from a bone stock military action FWIW.

That's the .375 Taylor. Some Alaska hunters use this cartridge, since is can launch .375-caliber bullets almost as well as a .375 H&H, and also because .338-caliber brass is cheap and found in any of the stores in town. I believe this is powerhouse of a wildcat, and those who are now using it on BIG game are finding out how great it is. It all translates to having a lighter .375 H&H rifle, since the ballistics are almost identical.

There's not really any advantage over the .375 H&H except if you already have a 7Mag or .338 you can rebarrel it and have a .375 in a handy rifle and minimal cost that's easy to make cases for. Ballistics are the same as the H&H which is plenty good. I could see doing one on a .338 M70 SuperGrade with the next heavier profile barrel.

Also, Midway had properly headstamped brass if you hunt in Africa in areas that require that.

I almost went that way with a 7 mag Ruger that I have but found a left handed 375 H&H.

My A&B barrel arrived from midway yesterday, so I will be looking hard at my options. I like the idea of the 376 Steyer, but also the simplicity of the 375 Whelen/AI.......decisions decisions.

The .375 and even .416 Taylor are excellent wildcats and are very powerful duplicating performance of longer cartridges.

If there's a problem with them its resale.....All wildcats suffer this problem and in the long run one is better off just buying the .375 H&H in the first place. That gun can be moved later if you wish.

I have a M-70 in .338 Mag and look at it as a Taylor many times.....and in the end I can buy the .375 for less than the cost to convert and I do all my own work.
