.458 LC

jeffeosso.458 LC
I named it LC to be just that, LC, doesn't stand for nuttin!
1.11", 1.65 oal, 45/70 case, with a turned in rim (if it comes to that), with max 28K pressure.
hoping to get rem 405s to 1000FPS .. I'll cut down some 45/70 brass and try in my handirifle .. if i get (a good deal) over that 1000FPS, I make invest in reamer and dies ..
what I WANT is a 625-2, but with a long cylinder, shooting .458 bullets at 1000fps, 5 shooter.
Will it work? does it matter? probably not .. a 454Casull will be more powerful ..
just want to SEE what it does at 1.11" case .. if it work, maybe .. if not, well, its just some scraped brass

Ralfboy.45 LC brass can be loaded with .458 bullets.
At least one Ruger with oversized chambers has been rebarreled. The owner called it .458 Enforcer, I think.
Let me see if I can find where I read about it..

boom stickI discussed this a while back in the handgun forum and it was made on a diff case the 7.62x54 case cut back. I can find the thread.
http://forums.accuratereloadin...=294103227#294103227so this would be in propper nomenclature a 45-35?
here is a pic of the 1.4" 45-70 and a 45-70
480 Ruger brass would have more capacity but I am sure you know that.
Reminds me of the 458 Devestator too

jeffeossowell,that's good news.
the 458 enforcer is reasonably close, EXCEPT i don't want to have reverse tapered cases ..
these guys all went light(er) and faster ..
I want pumpkin chunkin
let's see what it takes to get a rem 405 to 1000 FPS .. a casull can do it to 1350 or better.
would I be happy with 900? SURE ... if its accurate and easy enough to shoot
most muzzle loaders are NOT going 400gr at 1100 fps .. I think i can be right there with them, in a smallish gun.
No, I don't want to do a ruger or an xframe .. i LIKE the 625

RalfboyThe .458 Enforcer doesn't have a reverse tapered case.
Case mouths of loaded rounds of .45 LC measure about .472-.473 with .452 bullets. With .458" bullets you end up with a cylindrical case of about .478".

jeffeossoThanks .. I'll see if i can work with that ..
I'll stuff some .458s into LCs

boom stick
The stronger longer casull case at same length might be better or just at the nominal length.
I read an article once of someone who cut back casull cases to get higher performance out of LC length.
405's @ 1,200 in a wheel gun would be a lot of fun.
I think the casull needs a longer barrel

RalfboyBoom,
The .454 brass is thicker and has more internal taper. I haven't tried loading 45-70 bullets into .454 cases, but the .45 LC is maxed out at .458".

So someone would have to bother with inside neck reaming I gather.
15 December 2009, 03:58
RalfboyI would think so. I try to avoid neck reaming.

AMEN!

jeffeossobullets fit ..
on second (shortest oal) groove, its about .09 to long ..
this may not work in the Smith .. its hanging OUT of the cylinder! can't put them in any deeper, as that wouldn't ahve bullet diameter to crimp and would consume too much case
can't cut the brass shorter, as then its a 455 webley or some such
need to do some serious cognitatin on a superredhawk ...
and asking myself is it THAT important....
this one looks like a 2 case mock up and forget it wildcat
proof that not all mine work .. some times you shoot blanks, so to speak
15 December 2009, 06:34
jeffeossolooks REALLY impressive, though
15 December 2009, 06:48
RalfboyWhat length did you trim the cases?
15 December 2009, 06:58
jeffeosso1.109
15 December 2009, 06:59
boom stickA little sandpaper in the nose of the bullet can fix that

15 December 2009, 08:22
RalfboySomething isn't adding up.
Assuming this is a .45 ACP/AR gun the cylinder should be about 1.54" but the rim thickness of the .45 AR is about .090 vs. .060 for the .45 LC. This should give you about 1.62" of room.
A 1.109" case with 405 Rem in the forward crimp should have a OAL of about 1.56" and fit with ease.
What am I missing?

jeffeossobrainfart -- g's, i was working from memory on the case length
1.27"case, with rem 405,
1.817 ..
1.717 would BARELY work
ralf is right.. and i am haveing a moment ..
MIGHT still work
