I have a huge amount of .375 bullets and have always been fasinated by the caliber. I been thinking of building a new rifle with a .375 bore and using the 35 Whelan case to neck up. I know about the .375 Whelan and the .375 Hawk. I was wondering what some of you who know more than I do suggest and why do you suggest it? More than likely I would procure either a LH Ruger or Win 70 for the project and go from there with a Lilja or other custom barrel and a McMillan stock. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I built a 375/06 for a guy who went up to your area to work for the forest service. He like it a lot and,as brass is cheap, the only thing he had some problems getting was the loading dies. I got them for him from CH4D and he was thrilled with the accuracy AND performance. I really don`t know just what he has shot with it but he said it "Just Works" Aloha, Mark When the fear of death is no longer a concern----the Rules of War change!!

Snow I had a Mauser action converted to 375 Whelen a number of years ago to use as a cast bullet gun. Not sure how many cast bullets I've put down range with it. I've found it to be accurate with manageable recoil. The cases are easy to make using the Redding three die set. I uniformed the case neck thickness, uniformed the primer pockets. I can't say enough good things about the caliber. I used 35 Whelen data as a starting point for reloading with similar weight bullets. I'll cast my vote for the 375 Hawk (Scovill) found in the Barnes reloading manual. Using 59 grs of H4895 w/250 gr Gameking bullet @2700fps. Talking with Bob Fulton convinced me to try his creation. Bob wasn't happy with the 375 Whelen and rechambered to the 375 AI Whelen. Not happy with that improvement, Bob took it a step further and used the 9.3x62 reamer next to create what he called the 375 Hawk. This last step shortened the neck to .329 or so and moved the shoulder out to .454 increasing the case capacity. I think the 375 Hawk/Scovill design is ideal for the '06 case and .375 bullet. I started out shooting the 250 grain bullets with great success and have also shot the 235 bullets @ 2775 and find they hit hard and are flatter out to 300yds. 3.5" high @100 = 5" low @300. Brass is easy to make and lasts with very little trimming needed. This cartridge has basically spoiled me after shooting an '06, 35 whelen, 7 mag, 300 win & 338 win mag it is my main gun. Rem 700, Douglas #4 barrel @25". Would I build this gun again if given the chance? I did when my daughter started shooting my original gun and wouldn't give it back. Based on what is out there if I wanted a 375-06 based case I would go with the 380AHR. http://www.hunting-rifles.com/ While the Hawk gains you some over the 375 Whelen and AI it still leave capacity on the table. This is a drawing of the 358 versions but 375 would look the same. The AHR has the shoulder moved more forward and it will gain you a little more cpacity. Not a lot but heck if you are trying to push it why not push as far as you can. Like z-hat they have brass and dies available(cheaper las I checked). Well as I edit my old drawing I see the AI needs to be backed up and it is the 350Howell. I currently have a 375 & 411 version of the PDK being chambered. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Paul, Can you make 380 AHR brass from cheap 30-06 brass? I think it is longer and only available from AHR. Found the price @ AHR brass - bag of 100 $95.00. OUCH!!! The OP asked for .375 on the 06 case and I believe the .375 Hawk/S fits the bill. I've seen a 375 Gibbs on 06 brass and it had a shorter neck and duplicated the 375 Hawk loadings with a steep shoulder. I prefer the .375 Hawk/S.

Thanks. I am looking for something that will shoot 375 bullets with the min in cost for cases and such. Now I been thinking of ordering another MRC barreled action and putting it into a McMillan stock. MRC does not chamber the 375 Hawk. Which of there barreled actions would make a good choice to be rechambered? My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Snowwolfe, If you're interested, I'm posting my 375 Hawk for sale in the classifieds this evening. Built by Jim Kobe on a Interarms Mark X action, Shilen #4 barrel, NECG sights, Recknagel/NECG trigger, McMillan stock.

Darn lost my post. Have you priced the hawk brass? Yes you can make AHR form 06. Just has a shorter neck. My case is a 280 and has .28" neck. The Hawk will be about that legth as well. I have built 2 340PDK one uses 280 brass the other is set for AHR 2.6" brass. He uses both without issue. Check out the price on the Hawk dies. Can buy a lot of brass for the difference. I've never understood worrying about $40 more for brass over the cost of the rifle. If you build Hawk or Howell from 06 you will need to fireform. That will really eat into the difference in cost. 40-60 case should last the lifetime of the rifle. As to the orginal question. The 375 Whelen or 375Whelen AI would be the cheapest to build. IDT would put a Douglas barrel on your action chambered for the 375-06AI for around $200. Huntington sells RCBS a sizing die for $86 or a full die set for $136. I use the same seater for several smaller cases all the time. Or if you don't want an AI have him run an 06 reamer into a 375 barrel and then neck/throat it. For an extra $70 he will blue it. So for $270+/- you have your 357-06(ai) barreled action. He will also sell you a barreled action if you don't have an action. http://www.itdcustomgun.com/ If you are worried about eh dies matching the cahmber you can have Hornady make you a custom set for around the same $135. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Snowwolfe: Give RCBS a call. They were making small runs of FL dies when I bought mine for $75. I like using 35 Whelen brass and triming to min length and having a neck around .300 to grip the bullet. I'm guessing here that going for a case .10 longer will not gain anything for you. My gunsmith has a reamer, maybe you could send it to him. He does a lot of benchrest rifles also. He was also impressed with the #75 Hawk/S and built several for himself. What do you think? Let me know if you need his name.

Wow times have sure changed. Last I checked on the Hawk you had to go through z-hat. Just checked and 4-d even rents a 375Hawk reamer for $28. And $75 dies adds to the savings. Looking at Huntington's they list a special order 375 Scovill. I "ASSUME" it is one in the same. Nope in my opinion .10 neck adds nothing because it is only gross capacity. Even a couple net grains of capacity won't make much difference. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Snap That little 225 Hornady would be a "take no prisoners" antelope load at 2800+. I tested both the Speer 235 and Hor 225 and that Speer has a pretty hard core to be reliable at long range. The Hor 225 is better than you'd think. Just don't shoot point blank without a rain coat on

Thanks, At this point I am leaning towards the 375 Hawk as I like the idea brass can be bought for it properly headstamped for $28 per 20. Not looking for the absolute in velocity as I can always take my 375 H&H if power is what I am seeking. I fired off an email to MRC to see if they can chamber one for me on there actions since they do not list it on there web page. If not maybe just a .375 barrel blank and I can go from there. Snapper, I may get in touch with you pending what MRC tells me. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Good choice, you will be pleased! Remember to ask for the .375 Scovill when calling around, because the 375 Hawk was the original gun Bob had built and Dave Scovill had his reamer cut with the base set to .470 to use 06 brass. The name on that reamer was 375 Scovill. That's what your looking for. Mike, I'll give those 225 a chance the next time I reload unless your going to produce a batch.

No! The .375 Hawk was fine tuned by Scovill and called .375 Scovill when they sent him the reamer. I believe the only reamers produced are .375 Scovill in order to use '06 Whelen brass instead if the more expensive 9.3x62 brass. From the Handloader 166 article: "Whatever you choose to call it the375 Hawk or Scovill or .375 Hawk/Scovill (H/S), the ballistics are the same but the chambers are slightly different including the throat angle and freebore length. Informed readers will also note that the overall design of this cartridge is similar to the 375 Brown-Whelen although the 375 H/S has about 10 percent more powder capacity than the run-of-the-mill 375-06 or the .375 Whelen and about 5 percent more than the .375 Whelen Improved. Shortly thereafter Mark forwarded a custom VZ24 Czech Mauser with a Brown Precision synthetic stock Timney Sportsman trigger 25-inch Shilen barrel PME rear sight and a Jaeger front ramp fitted with a brass bead. All the metal sported a parkerized like finish that seemed fitting for a no-nonsense field piece. On the barrel Mark had inscribed "375 Scovill," and that was the name Bill Keyes put on the second set of dies that RCBS made for the slightly revised case design. (Hawk/Scovill would be a more accurate name) In reality, the only reason for the second version is that you need to know which reamer is used to chamber the rifle since cases sized in the .375 Hawk dies will not fit the .375 Hawk/Scovill chamber." Print off the article at the link below for additional information:www.z-hat.com/Handloader166.htm I know this is confusing, but the cartridge you want to chamber for is now called the .375 Scovill. Trust me on this one. Clymer made the reamer used to chamber my first gun. RCBS makes the dies and should not act dumb when you call them.

the 9,5x66 would be easy and best imho open up the dies 9 thou and voila! use a seperate neck/throet reamer the 66 brass is great and is actualy close to spec unlike most 06 brass out there (shame on manufacturers for saving money by skimping!) seat the bullets without expanding and use 9,3x66 loads. more capacity, tighter tolerances and low cost. or just use 66 brass in the hawk or whelen dies. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. Why not a .375 Gibbs? I believe that'd be close to an ultimate ".375/'06". Short necks seem to work out OK in .375 caliber. "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

Always wondered why this one have not become more popular. Should be perfect for The big ones of America. But probably because of its supposed lousy trajectory, it never rised to shine. People like to think they can hit animals beyond 200 yards. Well many of our dedicated members can, but, the average hunter - anywere - cant hit a barn at 250 yards. IMO, the .375 Ruger gives a lot of oooump in both ends and reduces mag. capasity - all to the shooters disadventage. .375-06, the best cartridge that never caught on. I found a left hand used savage 110 and bought a Pac-Nor barrel in 375 whelen improved (40 degree shoulder). I headspaced it using new unfired 35 whelen brass. Headspacing a savage barrel with the barrel nut is a piece of cake, no lathe/reamer required. I shoot 350 cast and 250 jacketed in it. Works very nice.
