If you could only have only ONE wildcat...what would it be?
Quoted in the small bore forum:
"You should post the question: What case would you pick to wildcat if you could pick only one?
Put that on the wildcat section and stand by."
Done and done...How about it? I know it is near sacriledge...but if we HAD to choose?
I'll stick with my first: 8mm-06AI

PhatmanOne Case to wildcat with?
375 Ruger: A case that is almost a copy of the Newton
I would Cat everything from a 7mm to .424 with it.
My first would be a .411/375 Ruger since it is so close to a 400 Newton you have to pull out a micrometer to tell the difference.
Do I kind of think Ruger riped off Mr. Newton?
Ya, I wish they had paid him a little respect of some kind.

HasherWell reasing is fundamental now isn't it?
One case you say?
I would say the 30/06/
It gived me all the 06 based wildcats from the 6/06 up through 400 Whelen as well as all wildcats based upon the 7mm Mauser/257 Roberts case and the ones based on the 250 Savage case. I can also do any BR based cases as well.

ramrod340Well since I have more wildcats than standard that would be an issue. Now that I live in CO it would be my 340PDK in Texas it would have been the 280PDK. If I lived in Africa or Alaska a 380PDK or 400PDK.
As usual just my $.02

I guess I would have tpo go with Hasher on this one. I have my 404 Jeffery so a large wildcat is a non starter but I already use 30-06 brass to form my 7x57 brass from but a 6.5 x 57 AI from 06 brass would allow neck turning for a fitted neck. Yeah that would do nicely to play with.

Alberta CanuckIn my case it would be the .41 Swiss Rimfire, necked to accept .234" diameter bullets.
I think that would be just about as useful in my shooting life as being limited to just one "wildcat".

BarstoolerVery simple ---- 6.5-06.
My other two rifles that started as wildcats (338-06 and 35 Whelen) have [unfortunately] went SAMI.
If I was to build another cat it would be a 35-375 Ruger.....maybe next year
Second in line would be a 6mm-06.

BoxheadWithout question my 338-06 if that is still considered a wildcat. Since 1995 it has never missed on a handful each of deer, elk, hogs, nilgai, three black and one grizzly bear and has dropped them within feet or closer of where they were hit. Using the 185 gr TSX, 210 gr Partition or the 225 gr Accubind.

Idaho SharpshooterAbsolutely! Rockchucks and Coyotes just come apart on impact.
I shot a coyote at 317yds according to my Geovids with it last fall, and we could not a big enough piece of hide left to make a "cold weather condom" for a mouse.
Rockchucks; under 500 yards and it just rains pieces and parts. With my nephew shooting, I have watched thru a pair of Nikon 9x63's and seen impact fling parts ten to twelve feet in the air. In different directions.
About a dozen or so years ago I was writing for Precision Shooting Magazine. I got involved with Savage and Black Star on a barrel coating process they (Savage) had interest in. Savage sent me a 12BV-SS and a couple spare chambered 223 barrels. They had the fine 1:9" twist. I shot all four with Black Hills Match 223. The fastest and the slowest of the four went to be coated. I started shooting the four in controlled round testing. Five rounds and switch barrels. The uncoated pair didn't last long enough to get any real accuracy loads, just velocity. 100 rounds and the throat had moved out 5-6 inches.
The faster coated one made two hundred and forty-some rounds. Those old "carp mouth" Speer 52gr HP's clocked nearly 5700fps, and about one in three made it to the target. The rest: "Poof!" about 25 yds downrange.
You have very little rim left around the bolt ring when you open it to the big W-Bee rim diameter; but it is a cool thing to take one out of the box at the range, especially the JLK custom 80 grainers. Cases are fairly easy to form out of the 30-378 factory W-Bee brass. Neil Jones at CPS made me the dies.
I still have the reamers if you want to see what F-A-S-T !!! looks like on your chronograph.
regards,
Rich

Jerry EdenWatch out Barstooler, for there is going to be some dirty sob, telling you the 6.5-06 is a
SAMMI cartridge!! They call the SAMMI the 6.5-06 A-Square, but it is not the same as our wildcat chambering!! For me it is difficult to choose between the 6 & 6.5-06.

Norman ConquestHi Jerry, please elaborate. I have been a .264 fan for years.I must confess that tradition still has me favoring the M/S 1903 in 6.5x54.but that's just me.I have toyed with a 6.5/06 (no point in going to an AI as you are already over bore). As of yet I have found nothing to truly hold my interest.I am however open to suggestions....that is the point;talk to me....Jerry + everyone.

Yes, but I built mine before A-Square SAMMIzed it, and to be really different...I could also recommend the 256 Newton, which I don't think ever went through SAMMI.

416TanzanYour advices are appreciated.
I am going through this very process, considering another rifle as a friend to a 416 Rigby. Most of the medium-heavy calibres are well covered with factory loads already. And we have that new kid on the block, the 375 and 416 Ruger. Putting a 458 Lott in a light, short rifle like a 458 AccRel would be quite appealing. And going up a notch, I can see real benefit in a 500 AccRel or 49-10. Both are essentially standard length cases based on Rigby/Lapua. I do ask about costs, too. For example, if I want a 450 Rigby, I might pick up a CZ 458 Lott for rechambering. but I am currently leaning toward lighter packages, 9lb combos including scope, which leads one to the 458 AccRel and 49-10/338 Lapua.
