Does the world need a 48 Special? (shorter 480 Ruger)

boom stickDoes the world need a 48 Special? (shorter 480 Ruger)
I was thinking about power to size ratio in a revolver. My thoughts wandered to imagine a 5 shot 48 Special (A shorter 480 Ruger) like the 44 special is to the 44 mag. Is this a fools errand or am I on to something? Would it physically fit? Seems it would be a powerful packing pistol. 44 Mag capacity but fatter bullet in a smaller frame.

richjI've held the Ruger 44 Spc Bisley . It's on a 357 frame.
Can the 480 fit on a 357 frame? or are you talking new frame size between 44 and 357?

I was hoping it would fit in the same frame as the 44 Special which is the same as the 357 Frame.

jeffeossono way on a medium to small 357 frame, as with the development of the 44 mag, where Keith blew up 44 russian/target/special frames, people will drive to pressure.
frankly, no.. there's little need for a case that loading UNDER pressure would accomplish

So the issue is pressure with 5 shots leaving too little metal in the cylinder?

257x50It works and has been done. 5 on a 357 3 screw sized frame.
And a 6 shot on a regular full frame Ruger.
Called a 476.....6 shot 475 on 1.200” brass

boom stickThanks for the info. Do you have anything else on it? Any articles on it?

wildmansixMy take is that the 480 ruger is the 48 special to the 475 linebaugh. If you want less than the 480 ruger just load some hardcast with trailboss and you have your 48 special.

NormanConquestThe smith in Carolina that built my Keith # 5 also builds 44 spls. from 357 S+W revolvers, (# 27 + 28) but with a 5 round cylinder. It kind of defeats the purpose IMO as that is still the N frame. A 44 on a K frame is what I would like to see. That was what Bill Jordan had in mind for the 41 Mag. on an M 19 frame. Best of both worlds but I assume the K frame can't handle it or it would already have been done.
Never mistake motion for action.

p dog shooterWould not the model 69 really fit this bill in 44mag.
Not a 480 but plenty of power to get the job done.

257x50In 3 years the 475 special has been out I have seen NO ballistic info on it.

Bill/OregonBoomie, the Rev. Jim Taylor of Taylor Throat fame has been in on the development of the very interesting .480 Achilles, which uses a heeled bullet.
Jim hangs out over at Paco Kelly's Leverguns forum, but he has a book out on the Achilles. I just ordered a copy.

boom stickThe heeled bullet is interesting. I think a 475 heeled bullet would also be fun on the 45 ACP case. We will call it the 48 ACP for now.
I remember discussing a 475 bullet on the 284 case but it seems that has been done now. Maybe a heeled 500 bullet on the 284 case would be new?

Bill/OregonBoomie, here is some wonderful reading on the 480 Achilles. My guess is these articles comprise the book Jim Taylor put together.

AtkinsonWildcatting pistols has become fairly common these days, but I doubt that any thing beyond the 44 mag. will ever set any sales records, too much recoil for one hand in most shooting circles I suspect.

I agree Ray I own a 480, 454 Casull a 460 and a 500, the recoil is stiff and take a lot of practice to learn how to handle it

Bill/OregonFooled with the .480 in a Super Redhawk, and the .500 in the ported X-frame. Lots of bark, all right. The .480 bit harder though; that ported barrel on the Smith worked pretty well.
The .480 Achilles is for the true pistol crank who wants to mess with heeled boolits at modest velocity.
