Hello all: I shot my .416 Newton today (very close to a .416 Taylor, no belt.) Very happy with the rifle & cartridge. Its a .35 Newton necked to .416, case slightly larger than the Taylor, but neck shorter (good powder load is just at end of neck) so bullets just sit atop the powder charge. I think I'll like this cartridge! The 350 gr bullets were accurate (Swift A-Frame) the 400 gr had substantially more recoil, and I'm not recoil shy at all. But a good difference. I'm much more comfortable shooting the 350's. Best Regards, Tom

boom stick...the original .400 Newton was a .405 Win Barrel screwed on a Newton receiver...it was the .35 Newton necked to .411..only 4 were made. Used sucessfully in Africa. Claims were made of a 300 gr. bullet at 3.042 fps?! Anyway, I decided on going a tad more to .416, insted of .411. Its just a plain jane new Charles Daly Mauser, made in Yugoslavia in .30-06, converted to the .416 Newton by getting an Adams & Bennett .416 Taylor, mauser threaded barrel (cheap!) put on the Chas Daly Mauser receiver...then having the .30 Newton reamer relieving the .416 Taylor chamber just a tad...Voila..a .416 Newton. Some gunsmiths are pretty keen. In lieu of Newton Brass (will be forthcoming from Jamison), you can run .338 WinMags through the .416 die, then forget about the belt, it will chamber also & flatten a bit. But works fine. There's also a new Newton Book coming out...go to www.NewtonRifles.com. Should be a winner! Maybe 2007 will be the year of the Newton?! New book, new brass...nearly too much fun for mere mortals..! Aloha, Tom

Dear White Bison: Where are you acquiring your 35 Newton brass? Sincerely, Yalie

HI Yalie: I have some I bought years ago from Bruce Jennings who wrote the Newton Book (he's since deceased). BUT, Marc Jamison is going to make new Newton Brass....256 Newton, .30 Newton, & .35 Newton. So there will be New .35 Newton Brass relatively soon...its already listed in the Graf Catalog (newest one) for sale, I have some on backorder. You can also make .416 newton from .338 WinMag, .358 Norma Mag., or .458 Win Mag brass. Run them through the .416 Newton die. The belted cases will fit in the chamber including the belt which will flatten out some. But the beltless .416 will be best from the beltless .35 Newton necked up. Best Regards, Tom

Dear Tom: Thanks for the 35 Newton information. I was considering a 358 Norma, but if brass will be available for the 35 Newton, then why not build the original? Then I might have to go all the way and build a 256 Newton, a 416 Newton, a 458 Newton; you get the picture. By the way, what kind of velocities are you getting with your 416 Newton? Sincerely, Christopher A. Bemis

White Bison, you may have seen my post about 10.75x68 AKA first Big Rifle. How does your cartridge compare to 416 Taylor?

Chris, & Riflegunbuilder... I haven't chronographed my .416 Newton yet, I'm using recommended loads for the .416 Taylor so I'm assuming I'll get .416 Taylor velocities...2400 fps with the 400 gr. bullet at least. Since the .416 Newton has a bit more volumetric capacity than the Taylor, but a very similar cartridge ..I think I can better the .416 Taylor a little. I'll post results when I get some chronographed loads...I think the .416 Newton will basically equal or better some the .416 Taylor...but is a beltless cartridge. Its the .35 Newton (or .30 Newton) necked up to .416. This results in a short (2.5") fat cartridge with little body taper, good capacity, short, steep neck (probably 35-40 degree shoulder angle)...very modern type. The only reason I haven't chronographed yet is the range was congested the day I was trying it out & didn't want to be a bother setting up the chrono & delaying the other shooters...but I will soon. I have a .22 Newton, a .256 Newton, a .280 Newton, (2) .30 Newtons & a .416 Newton. I'd like a .35 Newton & may get one some day. Aloha, Tom

Dear Tom: A little off point, but do you have accurate cartridge drawings and/or reamer prints for the 256, 30, 35 and 416 Newton cartridges? I would love to have a set of those prints. Sincerely, Chris

Hi: I have a list of Newton cartridge dimensions. I can send you a copy, and I think Newton chamber dimensions. Send me a private message with your address, etc. & I'll send it to you. I also called Jamison, of Jamison Brass & his gal Friday told me they had the equipment & were gearing up now to produce Newton Brass...it should get going pretty soon. Aloha, Tom
