Was thinking an easy 6.8 wildcat would be to make a short neck 270 Win. Trim 270 Win cases to 2.4" for a 3" Winchester short action magazine. The short ogive 6.8 bullets up to 115 grains will give 99% performance of the 270 Win.

Kind of like a 257 Roberts on steroids

Who needs that long neck anyway Wink

I'm all in favor of trying unusual wildcats, but putting that wildcat into a 3" magazine would be quite limiting. There are so many good 130 and 140 grain bullets in .277, but you would really have to stuff them deep into the case to fit into a 3" magazine. If you really want a wildcat in .277, then I'd go for a 270x57 or a 270-08. Those would fit much better into a 3" magazine.

Seems like I recall the 256 Newton is about a 2.4 oal. I have an original and also a 700 Rem I did many years ago. Of course it shoots a 6.5 but a necked 25 or 27 might be kinda neat?

Duckboat is entirely correct in that the 270/08 with 130-140 gr bullets has no trouble keeping up with a 270 Win in shorter barrels too.

We do need a 270 cal short action cartridge that can be loaded down for negligible recoil with the 95 TTSX, the 100 and 110 Accubond to duplicate the 257 Roberts but still handle the heavies in a 2.8" featherweight action.

The 270-08 would work but it's a bit light for elk/moose.

The 270 WSM is a bit too much for deer.

The 284 Winchester necked down a smidge to .277 would be just right.

Too bad that RCM brass is so difficult to find.

It would work with the short 6.8 bullets but it's too long for the heavies in a 2.8" action. Even the 284 case is a bit long.

270 Win capacity should be the goal IMO.

Capacities:

270-08 54 gr
270-284 Win 66 gr
270 Win 67 gr
270-300 RCM 71
270-7mm SAUM 72.3
270 WSM 77.6

Accurate has some 100 gr bullet 5744 loads for the 270 Win that are just a touch faster than the 6.8 SPCII. Recoil should be right at 257 Roberts level.

100 gr bullet 36 gr 5744 for 2735 fps min.
100 gr bullet 40 gr 5744 for 3108 fps max.
