Hey all, new here. As my first post, i need help with a wildcat i have been working on with a friend. The basic jist of it is, a 14.5x114 case cut off to 3" and necked down to .458". The design was suppossed to be able to send a 600gr borerider at 3500fps, but when quickload was run on it, it came up 500 fps short! Problem seems to be, .50 powders aren't near slow enough for this thing. So, i have two questions, one, does anyone know where i can get powder made for such cartridges as the 14.5x114 or a 20mm. Two, we will need brass, and as pretty much all of 14.5x114 is steel case, we need something custom. I asked on thehighroad.org about making some cases on a lathe, but they told me that it doesn't give the strength of extruded or drawn brass. So, how can i make some, or get some taht is not to expensive? My friend and i talked to a custom brass maker (bertram brass) but he wanted $20+ per case!!! Thanks!

the best I can do, is www.patsreloading.com. They have the 20mm cannon powder there. That or www.hightechammo.com. That is my good deed for the day. Rich Buff Killer

Just out of curiosity why are you doing this and what will you use it for? What fire arm will you use? Is 5020 too fast burning? roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

Idaho Sharpshooter--thanks for the link, but what is the 20mm powder called? I didn't see anything that blatently said "20mm cannon powder" but i might have just missed it.... bartsche--This is something that will allow accurate shooting past 3.5k yards (read, past .50bmg ranges) and a REALLY FUN project. I will have to get a custom action (IIRC, lawton actions is the company that said they could) and probably make a custom stock. I know a LOT of people who do that stuff, just have to make the calls. I have never heard of 5020....is it for larger than .50 shells? if so, then it will work better if any of you have a program that can calculate this case with slower than .50 powders, could you run my numbers? I can send them to you.... Thanks!

BTW, really expensive project. Bullets will be about $4 apiece (bullet only!) brass, somewhere out there, and a custom gain twist barrel. All so expensive......

Suzy cases and 14.5 brass cases are very scarce and expensive.I know as I'd like to get some for projects. Like Suzy cases for making 8GA FH from and the 14.5 brass for making my 900HE, but both cases are being bought up by collectors and guys using them in guns they have for 15 to 40 bucks each. Build what you want from 20mm Vulcan brass which is much more plentiful.Like the one in the picture made 40 years ago by Bob Snapp a neighboring smith and friend here in MI. The slowest 20mm powder that most big name surplus guys have is WC872. And you can get slower new powder from VV. By the way make case full length like picture and it is easier to use slow powders and get much more velocity than 3500 with 600 gr...like 4500-5000. Ed MZEE WA SIKU

Ed--Thanks for your input,i really need to find a way to make my own brass, otherwise it seems as if i will have to be a bum with a really cool gun Thanks for the name of the powder,, do you know if quickload has it in its library? As for more velocity......I might make a version like that, but i am wanting to keep some resembelance of barrel life and lack of recoil

I don't think Quickload has it. As 50cal pointed bullets go, 600gr are light. If all you want is for a 600gr streamlined bullet at 3500 and you have a BMG sized action, make a BMG improved. Should get 3300 to 3400 for sure..... Should be doable as my 585HE gets a 650 gr over 2900.Ed MZEE WA SIKU

Okay, do you know of any program that does? If not, how do i calculate a good starter load for it? I am going to mess with a .50 improved, but it might be a bit close to the .460 steyr. Thanks again for the info!

Wow, was that ever fired? The case in the picture looks unfired, but that looks like it was a pretty interesting project. Can you share any more details? I've read that the fat mac burned barrels, so how bad was that?
