450/400 far left.

with the new strong hornady 450/400 nitro brass comming out...

here is a tribute wildcat design/aircat

cut off the rim,
add exractor groove,
trim at 2.65" or 2.85"

viola! rimless 450/400 NITRO pondoro and taylor.

or take the easy way and neck up 338 rum brass to the same lengths...the former being a better tribute...

p.s.

how many 400 h+h's have you seen???

this would be better in performance...

reply to self...

yes technicly it is a rimless 450/400 nitro short neck...

an interesting thing to note is it still is a 450/400 nitro and is properly headstamped.

no africa wildcat issues except if you lose yer ammo.

chambering will be easy with a slightly altered 450/400 reamer.

if you had a true 416 rigby action, say a rebarreled c.z. you could trim at 2.9" and use either an opened up bolt to match the casehead or a rigby boltface and a semi rimmed case (not reccomended)

personaly i like the 2.85" version...it will be a cousin to the 404 jefferey but have the ability to shoot cheap pistol bullets for plinking / prarie dogs and hoggs.

so either a 2.65", 2.85" or a 2.9"

yep...only dear ol' boom stick can turn a pinky out tea sippn by jove monocular pith helmet wearin fancy double gun cart and turn it into a bolt trash wildcat Big Grin

its a disease.

since the 450/400 is also called the 450/400 jeffery...i can name it the 400 jeffery rimless dancing

o.k. now the 2.85" version is officialy the 400 jeffery rimless aka 450/400 nitro rimless...aircat official that is...

BoomStick ,,,, Thanks ... Just when I was thinking I was wasteing my time on these things you made it interesting......................That turning an extractor groove into a rimmed case ... I hate to sound stupid but is that safe...???? ..............................Wouldn,t it be easier to just use the 338 RUM or Belted H&H case??But I think 400 Jeffrey is neat ... Again Thanks.. gumboot out....

Turning the rim off and cutting an extractor groove is quite safe. There is a guy I know from up north here that started a whole line of wildcats some decades ago that used .348 brass (rimmed) and did the same thing. He had the 6.5, 7, .30, 8, .338, .375, .416, and .458 on this design. It essentially was a set of short mags (though longer than the current short mags) before their time. I owned one of his guns in .30 Holt, and it would beat .300 Weatherby without trouble, so I would say that the cutting off the rim and making an extractor groove thing is fine.

Reducing rim diameters or eliminating rims entirely and cutting an extractor groove in modern high-pressure cartridge cases is a perfectly safe practice that I have done hundreds if not thousands of times. One suggestion though before proceeding - sacrifice one case (even if they cost you 2 bucks each) and section it. That way you can be assured that lathe work on the head is indeed safe and you can also learn a lot about the strength of the case and what kind of pressures you can fool around with. (Yes, I said FOOL. Because that is what all of us wildcatters are. Wink)

thanks cheech!

id love to measure the ruger to be 450/400 cuzz that would be the new std.

sooooooooooo the debate would be do i dare do a slight 532 rim and dare to have a mini rebate???

the 2.65" version should...

i dont think a mini rebate would be all that bad but just left of perfection.... and cheeper

turn a 375 h+h into a 400 jeffery with some lathe time on the brass and trim at 2.85"

the benefits would be cheap and lighter pistol bullets as well as heavy premium...more capacity than 416 rem mag and the alure of a rimless bolt 450-400

it will be almost identicle to the 404 jeffery in evry aspect...

the unrebated rim would just be more smith work...

so i guess that print above is correct... it converts to .545" at the casehead soooooo

it will be a jeffe with the shoulder a tad forward and a tad over a cal length neck at 2.85. if it is made with the 404 rim it will be a faultless case design without a rebate.

it will be more versitile with the use of pistol bullets so it can be a do it all cartridge with 400 grainers for d.g. and mid to light pistol bullets for distance and plainsgame.

all the legendary slick feeding charecteristics of the 404 too boot Big Grin

cheap plinking paper punching practice and varnmiting to pachederms... banana

verrrrryyyyyyy innnnteressssstinnnnng...

i like it!

nostalgia+extreme versatility!
