i posted this on another thread but i thought i would use the mass brainpower and experience of a.r. to help. what do you think of the 375 ruger 2"???

2" 375 ruger could use longer bullets in a short action and have no rebate on a std. boltface. it will have about 80 grains of capacity (read the same capacity as the 376 steyr...you could call it the 376 fattie). you could use long bullets without issue. now that is a cool cat! the only thing is 3 down instead of four...but if there are no flies on the 376 this is an interesting idea...no bullet length isses, no rebate issues (although the saum and wsm rebate is small) and standard boltface.

if the 375 ruger is 101.5 grains capacity and this is 80% of that it would be about 80 grains capacity. the 376 steyr capacity and performance would be the goal for this cart.

i think i will call it the 375 ruger 2" the 2.17" version i named the ruger short already. headstamp is easy...just add 2" to the 375 ruger headstamp.

yes the 376 steyr fits in a 3.1" action but most are 3" or 2.9" there is no real need for the cart like most but it is a neet idea, no?

300 @ 2400 is the old school 375 h+h velocities and is enough for hunting about anything and still pretty shootable. 250's @2600...that will do anything else.
250 gr 375 a-frame

heck if you could get these 350 gr woodleighs @ 2270 which i think you could you could get to the 4,000 lb. f.p.e. benchmark. the cool thing is they could fit a short action with this idea.

a stopper? no but if i wanted one i would use a much bigger bore.
a neet all arounder idea i think.
thanks for your input ahead of time wave

Probably nothing wrong with your idea, Boom, but I for one really do not understand why some feel the need for a short action, and what benefits it should give.
At least when we are talking big game, anyway...
If I want lesser than the Ruger/H&H, I will go for a .375 Whelen/9,3x62, with one more down!

i would say it is not a d.g. rig but a woods gun for moose bear and pig that could be light and carried well.

An answer in search of a question.

The WSM and RUM rim is only slightly rebated. Not really enough to fall into the rebated category like the 284 win.

The only reason for the 375 Ruger 2" would be if you already had a gun that would only take a short round and you really liked the gun and didn't want to get something new.
I don't think that I would go out on purpose to start from scratch and head that direction.

For a Woods gun, a 375 JDJ on a Marlin or Win 94 would be a great combo in my opinion. I already have a Win Big Bore 94 in 375 Win. It should be enough gun for anything that I'm ever likely to shoot at.
I did pick up a couple of extra 375 Win barrels to have around and a 375-307 does sound interesting.

But... Need doesn't have to be the issue,
WANT is reason enough to do anything that trips your trigger.

It all depends on the size of lever action you have to work with.
Model 94 Winchesters are everywhere, but won't take the 50-90 case rim. But they will take a 444 Marlin or 307/356 win case. Length depends on action work done.
