does anybody know of any 338 RUM wildcats, i was thinking like a 8mm/.338 RUM or a .358 9.3mm .338 RUM wildcat, would any of these be viable?

What the point of a 7mm/338RUM when there is a 7mm RUM?

Norseman

One advantage would be that the 338 Ultra is a little bit shorter than the 300 Ultra case. The 338 Ultra is a little bit shorter because with the cannelure position on many 338 bullets, the overall length would be too long if the 300 Ultra case lenght (=375 H&H) was used.

One of the problems with the 2.85" long case (set by the 375) and the 3.6" magazines is that the 375 H&H was loaded with blunter bullets and so an overall lenght of 3.6" was fine for the 375 H&H with such bullets.

Thanks Mike 375, Norseman, magazine length, is the reason, I shoot 700`s and the 3.7" magazine will allow me to seat any bullet style to reach the lands, you will not be able to do such with a full length 2.850" case. The 338RUM is .090" shorter than the 300 RUM and the 7mm RUM.

Tim in TN,

Sounds like a good spring project for me being the fact I can't get more then 2700's FPS with my reloads using Nosler reloading guide and 175 grains Partitions.

What bullet brands, type and weight are you using?
Have you tried Berger, JLK or Hornady Amax?
What are the velocity?
Recipe?

flick, Norseman, I am getting 3620 fps w/140gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips 3540 w/150gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, I think this is favorable to the full length RUM, these are full house loads w/IMR 7828. RL25 was a tad slow for these weights but I will try it with the new Hornady SST 162 with this powder, also on the list to try is the Nosler Accubond 160gr. The rifle itself is a trued Remington 700 with a Sendero taper Krieger barrel, w/flutes, 26", Pillar bedded in a McMillan stock, the scope is a Leupold LRT 6.5-20x50 matte. I really have a lot of developement work left to be done but it already has shown accuracy potential with a 5 shot group in the .600" doing 3500fps plus with the 150`s. I also had another reamer made at the same time but have not had a rifle done yet on the same case necked to .30 cal. I REALLY like the 338 RUM case. The impressive trajectory of these type rifles is what got my attention, with a 3" high sight in, can you believe that the bullet will land only 12" low at the 500yd. mark. Simply amazing to me. I built this rifle to shoot whitetails from an elevated blind on a powerline, I have planted foodplots on it plus there is a huge cornfield behind the blind with select cut on the other side of the powerline, I have used a lazer rangefinder and the last powerpole is 450yds. I also have antelope hunted in NM for 5 years and cannot imagine a better round for this game animal.

Tim- thanks for the data, sure sounds impressive and only a 26" barrel. This may be a project to take a serious look at. Now who made your reamer?

I think a 366 variant would be cool. It'd be the only one at the range. Not that it would be as practical as the 375 RUM, just different.

I'd say any sense of the word "practical" regarding the 375 RUM could easily be applied to the 366 RUM. [Roll Eyes] (except for over-the-counter ammo availaility - are there still folks out there who don't reload?)
There's a growing interrest in this caliber, and seems I see more bullets offered every day.
.366" is just as good as .323", .338", .358" or .375"; you're always just trading off trajectory, sectional density, hole size and bullet selection.
I'm on a .358 kick at the moment, and am working out a 358 RUM Improved of sorts as we speak.

I just was asked to update any load developement from the 7mm/338. It just so happens I went to the range this past sunday. I felt I was near max @ 89.2 gr. of Imr7828 and the 140 Nosler which had given the 3620 fps avg last time out. I bumped the load to an 89.5gr charge and from 9 rounds fired one piece of brass showed the shiney mark from pressure, no heavy lift but this is the utmost upper limit for this bullet and powder, the chronograph showed an impressive 3689 fps average. The 2nd round was a few ticks over 3700 fps, I will back the charge back to 89 gr and see how the brass lives at this charge weight.

TIM,
thanks for the update.
When will you experiment with heavier bullets such as 160 or 175 grain?
Perhaps I could donate some bullets (162 Amax) if you send me a personal message?

Charlie Sisk has a reamer for the 9.3 Sisk, can't recall which brass, think it is on the Ultra but might be 404. He posted a bunch of data on 24hrcampfire.com several months ago, search for 9.3 Sisk. www.siskrifles.com

I have 300 Ultra, 338 Ultra, 375 Ultra and 416 Ultra reamers. Not exactly wildcats.

Have a 358/404 Jeff reamer ordered, not exactly 358 Ultra, instead we are using the 404 Norma brass to get away from the rebated rim. Some slight differents in the dimensions of Ultra brass and Norma brass at the rim and base, Ultra brass will not chamber in the 358/404 Norma as the Ultra is about 0.005" larger at the base.

Bill Shehanne (D&B Supply, www.scopeusout.com) has done a lot of work with various cartridges using RWS 404 brass for 1000 yard rifles. I think 6.5mm, 7mm, and 30 Cal. He may be into using Ultra brass now, I do not know.
