does anybody know of any 338 RUM wildcats, i was thinking like a 8mm/.338 RUM or a .358 9.3mm .338 RUM wildcat, would any of these be viable?

One advantage would be that the 338 Ultra is a little bit shorter than the 300 Ultra case. The 338 Ultra is a little bit shorter because with the cannelure position on many 338 bullets, the overall length would be too long if the 300 Ultra case lenght (=375 H&H) was used.

One of the problems with the 2.85" long case (set by the 375) and the 3.6" magazines is that the 375 H&H was loaded with blunter bullets and so an overall lenght of 3.6" was fine for the 375 H&H with such bullets.

Thanks Mike 375, Norseman, magazine length, is the reason, I shoot 700`s and the 3.7" magazine will allow me to seat any bullet style to reach the lands, you will not be able to do such with a full length 2.850" case. The 338RUM is .090" shorter than the 300 RUM and the 7mm RUM.

Sounds like a good spring project for me being the fact I can't get more then 2700's FPS with my reloads using Nosler reloading guide and 175 grains Partitions.

What bullet brands, type and weight are you using?
Have you tried Berger, JLK or Hornady Amax?
What are the velocity?

flick, Norseman, I am getting 3620 fps w/140gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips 3540 w/150gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, I think this is favorable to the full length RUM, these are full house loads w/IMR 7828. RL25 was a tad slow for these weights but I will try it with the new Hornady SST 162 with this powder, also on the list to try is the Nosler Accubond 160gr. The rifle itself is a trued Remington 700 with a Sendero taper Krieger barrel, w/flutes, 26", Pillar bedded in a McMillan stock, the scope is a Leupold LRT 6.5-20x50 matte. I really have a lot of developement work left to be done but it already has shown accuracy potential with a 5 shot group in the .600" doing 3500fps plus with the 150`s. I also had another reamer made at the same time but have not had a rifle done yet on the same case necked to .30 cal. I REALLY like the 338 RUM case. The impressive trajectory of these type rifles is what got my attention, with a 3" high sight in, can you believe that the bullet will land only 12" low at the 500yd. mark. Simply amazing to me. I built this rifle to shoot whitetails from an elevated blind on a powerline, I have planted foodplots on it plus there is a huge cornfield behind the blind with select cut on the other side of the powerline, I have used a lazer rangefinder and the last powerpole is 450yds. I also have antelope hunted in NM for 5 years and cannot imagine a better round for this game animal.

I`m just starting to get into the groove, just finished building shooting bench, I have 139 Interbonds to try, 154 SST`s, 162 SST`s. so I will keep you informed as soon as things develope, Tim.

I think a 366 variant would be cool. It'd be the only one at the range. Not that it would be as practical as the 375 RUM, just different.
