The U.S. .30-'06 has lots of wildcat born brethren. What about the Mauser-based 57mm length cartridges?

This is missing the 257 Roberts and 9,5x57 MS but you get the idea. I think a .410 and .358 would make nice additions as well as the rimless 444.

Also missing the 6mm Rem or 244 your choice. Then several .224 wildcats based on the 6mm. TTH, Clark etc.

As usual just my $.02

Ah yes... The 6mm Rem.
the 35 and 410 versions could be great wildcats but the well designed 9,5x57 splits the difference well. A 35 x 57 improved would get close to 35 Whelen performance but what is truly a niche is the 410. Possible to reproduce 405 win performance with 300 grain bullets. A mini 400 Whelen.

And the 5.6x57 which has a very thick neck brass as it also has an adapter cartridge that allows it to fire the 22 rimfires.

I would also wager that the 7.7x58 Japanese is an offspring. Interestingly, the 7.7 chamber reamer offered by a couple of makers, has a neck diameter equal to an American .30 cal round case. This allows it to be used to create a 7.62mm x 57 wildcat by simply short-chambering a .30 cal barrel and necking down 8x57 brass.

I forgot the never adopted 1907 Chinese Military 6.8x57. Think of it as a larger diameter 257 Roberts with the shorter 6.8 SPC bullets. I am temped to to have one of these on a short action and 6.8 SPC bullets but the 6.8 SPC and 270 Win are just so much more practical.

I just picked up a 9X57 Oberndorf and some original Kynoch ammo and was a bit surprised to find the bullets are .357" not the .355" I always thought.
I have read that most guns will shoot .358" bullets just fine though.

I have all these except the rimmed variants, as well as the 6mm rem, and 8.5x57.

The several 9x57's I have had would all shoot .358" bullets as the chamber neck was large enough to accomodate. Heck, I even had one that had the neck enlarged so as to allow firing 9,3x57 cartridges. I have enough 9,3x57's and the neck was too sloppy for my liking so it is now a .35 Whelen.

The 8.5x57 is a wildcat designed by me and a customer. Very good round.

IMHO the 6mm Rem. and the 7x57 are the greatest thing since peanut butter. I've owned, but never hunted with an 8x57, but it can be loaded to 30/06 power levels and should be superb. To the best my knowledge the europeans use it like we do our 30/06. Great cartridges.

Interesting line up. Some of these are like a new language for novices like me. But, I'm catching on to metric calibers. Thanks all. Keep it going.

I like to split the difference and shoot the 6.5x55, but since it isn't Xx57 based, I'll recommend the 6.5x57, its ballistic twin.

The 7x57 is the lightest recoiling big game rifle that I would hunt anywhere on earth with and feel comfortable..

I would choose the 175 gr Nosler, North Fork soft or cup point and one of the flat nose solids of same weight or close, probably the GS Customs..

If I had to hunt the world with one bullet in a 7x57, it would be the cup point..

Hope I never have to do this! Smiler
