Since the 30-06 shoulder diameter and the 405 Win neck diameter are the same and similar casehead was wondering if anyone has converted an 06 to a rimless 405 Win to headspace on the extractor like the B&M carts.
If you ran a .410" neck/thoater in the chamber to 2.58" or a 405 Win reamer in you could have a 405 Rimless with a rebore or putting on a 405 barrel. Use 405 Win dies too. Trim 06 basic to 2.58". Case capacity should be similar too but can be run at higher pressure. Think of it as a 400 Whelen power cart but extractor headspace and no shoulder to form.

This thread has some good information on making a similar cartridge; the 444 rimless.

Yes, This seems to be a good cat as well as the 425 OKH and the 435-06 idea I came up with using 425 WR bullets on the 06 case but I thought the same taper as the 06/405 Win to aid feeding and the bullets designed for the 405 and 450/400 would have great use in their functional impact velocities. Neck up 06 brass or form the right length from cylindrical brass. A simple rebore if the barrel was thick enough and use a 405 reamer.

Yes, it was done in the early 1920's and it is called the .400 Whelen.

Z-Hat info on .400 Whelen

"The first notice I find of the .400 Whelen is in "Arms And The Man" on June15, 1922 where Whelen tells about his work on this cartridge. The .400 Whelen is the 30-06 cylindrical case necked down to take the .405 Winchester 300gr. .411" diameter round nose bullet."

No shoulder just taper and about a tenth of an inch longer so similar capacity.
Extractor headspace.
No shoulder to form.
off the shelf cheap dies and reamers.

I don't think it is prudent to headspace on the extractor. Too much can go wrong.

I read the forum posts in the first link provided above. The guy that was making those rifles was headspacing on the case mouth. The 30 carbine headspaces on the case mouth. So do some pistol cartridges. That is a lot more sensible.

Why not a 9.3 x 62 mm case to form the 444 rimless? Just cut it down to the shoulder for a 2" version of this cartridge. No fireform needed.

LOL well let's see a 416PDK 280rem brass almost straight with a 416 bullet. While I have tried used the extractor to headspace while forming I would not suggest it. The 411PDK uses longer cylinder brass. Or like others have said the 400 Whelen or z-hat 411 Hawk. Using cylinder brass or even expanded brass forming the shoulder is not an issue and in my opinion before coffee safer..

As usual just my $.02

In a word, "Yes". About 75 years ago. They just turned the rims off of the .405 cases and used them in P-17 actions. You can also leave the rims on, and use the P-14 action. either way you will have some feeding issues to deal with if you want to use the magazines.

I still have a 1903 Springfield chambered for the .405 Winchester with the rim. It shoots fine, but since the original builder never dealt with the feeding issues, rather than spend the money to do that now, I just use it as a single shot. I only paid $180 for it, so it's worth the money as a one-shooter.

Bent Fossdal spelling?

Does a 240 Weatherby cased 404, 411, or 416 bulleted cartridge.

Alberta,

you ever get tired of all that fussing around and decide to sell it, be sure to PM me. I got a gunsmith that can fix that for me. He took an extra Krag action I had laying around and built me a .370 Krag that would feed.
