Bent Fossdal.411-.240-2"- .405 Belted Express!!
After some enquiers about my .425 Fossdal, I had some ask me for a 2" version, and remembered that BoomStick made one up some time ago;

240 wby case, 10.75x57 belted, and the 2" short action version
looks like a smaller 458 win mag...virtualy identical proportions.
But at 2" its capasity with the long .423 bullets is really to small, and 300 grs bullets for the .423 are only custom made.
But how about the .411? Both the .411 Ryan and .405 Commedus are 2,5" long.
A 2" it is easy to make from .240 wea'by, and one could use a shortened .405 Win die-set, chamber could be reamed with a .405 Win reamer, just cut the belt by hand.
So, cheap components.
At .308win preassures it should duplicate the original .405 Win, or what?
Neat, light powerhouse in bear/hog country...??

Bent FossdalHeh,
I just had to make one up...
.240 wea'by brass, slimmed/trimmed down .416 bullet to protrude same as original .405 Win.
Here next to .358 Win and .350 RemMag. Because of short bullet, case was cut to 2.170" like the .350 RemMag, in stead of 2" as the .358 Win.
Cute, or what?
Since the .358 Win will give 2400 with a 250 grs bullet, 2200 fps with 300 as original .405Win should be easy!

Bent FossdalHmmmmmmmmm.
But I am ordering a .400 Whelen reamer with the original .458" shoulder theese days...
Maybe a better idea to just ream in 2"...
But dies will be more expensive...
Or will they...
It will have more capsity, but the belted one will duplicate the original, and that was what I looked for...
hmmmmmmmmm...

Bent FossdalHaving fun, admitted gladly!

But hey, Old Yeller in a short, accurate, little rifle with impressive mag capasity - what's not to like?

boom stickThe shortie is kinda cute aint it

shoot the 350's for anything up to moose in a small light package.

23 July 2008, 01:05
boom stickI think make the reamer 2.165" and depending on mag length and bullets used just trim length, load and crimp accordingly. since we are headspacing on the belt it is the win mag lott thing. some will go long, some will need the shorter but it will be uber flexible.

MileHighShooterBent,
Got bored and starting looking through old threads....any drive to go forward with this idea at all? Now that I've sold off the rifle I was going to use for a short range thumper...this one looks tasty!
If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

Bent FossdalMHS,
No, I was just bored and made this up for the pure joy and hell of it.
But it is free to go ahead, low cost reamer, low cost dies, low cost bullets, easy to get brass - what's not to like?
Hell I might still make one, I just love that little thing!

MileHighShooterI really like the idea of being able to use any short action without having to find a short mag! There is a 7x57 98 action at my LGS thats been there (and probably WILL be here) for a while. Hmm....

boom stickI think the short action .470" casehead big bores is a neglected catting area.
Shooting up to 350 grains and getting 45-70 performance is cool imho.
It is a way cute round and making brass would be so easy.
If you look at all the wildcats listed in the max bore on the 08 thread there are quite a few goodies there yet to be including this one.
To get a 6 lb. open sight gun to attain 300 grains @ 2,200 in any of these would be a great stalking rig/cart combo.
I would make the reamer a 10.75x57 belted AKA "425 Fossdal short" and then trim back to any length as needed since it will headspace off the belt to accomodate the short 308 magazines to the classic 6.5x55 mauser length.

MileHighShooteri really like the idea of using 405 Win reamers and shortened dies, makes this a mini-poor man's magnum lol. I'm thinking 18-20" barrel, maybe a Mannlicher stock? Forward mounted scout scope....nice and trim weight, easy to carry, fast to point and shoot. If original 405 Win ballistics to lighter 45/70 ballistics could be achieved this would be exactly what I was looking for in my old 423 thread a few months back. Big bore lever action bullets and performance, but from a light handy bolt action so you could use FN or spitzers. I think midway still has 240 brass on clearance as well....hmm....that 7x57 might be coming home with me after I get my 25wssm picked up!

31 December 2008, 02:53
boom stickIf you were wanting to do a 400 version then why not a mini 411 Hawk AKA 400 Raptor using shortened 411 hawk dies and reamer?
More capacity so lower preasure.
If using the shorter tip to canalure 405 win bullets the case could be about 2.25" long.
Here is a poor photoshop of the 400 Raptor vs the longer 411 Hawk

MileHighShooterInteresting, but for some reason I am attracted to Bent's version with the belt....but i always wondered in Z-Hat did 308 versions of his Hawks

boom stickAny of them will be cool. I was mixed up cuzz the dummy I posted here was a 423 bullet and originaly that is what I thought you wanted.
I think there should be the 400, 416, 423 and 44 on this case.
31 December 2008, 05:11
MileHighShooterok so the dummy you made is .423, and the one Bent posted is .411 right?

Yea, that is correct. Point is that in this case, there really are not to many good bullets in the 300 class for the .416 and .423, but the 300 for the .405(.411)Win is cheap, easy to get and made for the obtainable velocity.
The 300 grains Northfork will also do well, but due to its longer length, it will probably not get mutch beyond 2100 fps, but as the pics show, for close hunting that will be very good:
It will be best in a longer action than the regular .308 action, and fit like a glove in your 7x57. And you can probably reach 2200fps, but you will have to have the free-bore custom reamed.
Their .416-360 and .423-380 will be to long for this case, and leave to little room for powder, but Woodleights .423-350
might reach 2100 fps, at least in the 7x57 action.

MileHighShooterdont forget the possibility of using cast 41 mag bullets properly sized!
i think for busting up to elk sized critters and hogs, this will work out perfectly. very interesting lil cartridge, thats for sure.

This what I did also, .411x240x2.170".... and shortened a .405 die 3/16"s......it works great. 14.1/2" bbl shoots 300 grainers at 2100 fps.

Idaho SharpshooterThe devil finds work for idle hands. I am getting 118 once-fired 240Wbee cases. Time to dust off this thread and look at Boomie's FL (2.5") version?

boom stickThe original Idea was Bents to use the 240 WBY case and a big bore. This is Bents baby and deserves all the credit. I encouraged him to go 423 over 416 and then he wanted a longer case so the 425 Fossdal is 2.6 or 2.65" I cant remember but this would be a shorter 425 Fossdal or a 404-240 WBY. You can not make 425 Fossdal cases from 240 WBY but you can fire them in a 425 chamber unless the belt dimensions have been changed from the 240 WBY.
Bent, can you confirm your 425 dimensions?
Be it 2.5" or 2.65" It is a cool idea.
I think 300-350 grain flat nose bullets are the ideal weight for this case.
05 December 2009, 20:35
MileHighShooterOld thread I know, but I have been brain storming! How much length is possible on the 240 case? I'm thinking something between the 41-240 and the 425. I have a spare 1903 action I have no idea what to do with, and I STILL need a big bore short range thumper
If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

Bent FossdalMHS,
While playing with then .240 case, it was a bitch and a half to open up. One would make special tools and anneal several times to do this successfully.
Cut at 57mm it is easy as badabam to open.
I really think the .411 300 grs is the best solution, thus the cheap dies/reamer from .405Win.
Qual Cartridges has the .425 Fossdal in their list, it is 68mm long. Drawing at ammoguide, check my signature.
I changed profession and broke a leg this year, and have not had any time or progress on this baby at all, but am planning to finnish it this spring.
But I will also say, on a Spring 1903, the original .400 Whelen with the .458 shoulder is a grand thing.

I can speak a little to the bullet issue. Or at least give you a link to a thread about some performance noted with the 300 and 400gr Hornady's this weekeng.
http://forums.accuratereloadin...4711043/m/7671098121Granted my case pushs the velocities higher than you are taking about here. A better bullet in the 300-350gr range would be great. My next trip I'll be trying out some resized 350gr 416 Magtips.
Then again a bullet that takes two 175#+ hogs with one shot at 80yds and exits from a 06/280 based case can't be all bad.

As usual just my $.02

boom stickA belted 2.65" 06 based case to .410" would be a good 300@ 2400 like the 375 rimmed or 400@ 2150 like the 450-400
What is not to like?
Just a matter of ordering brass/dies ect.
Plenty of taper and performance.
think of it as a 400-400/375 belted nitro express but longer
It rightfuly could be called the 400 Magnum since it would longer than the 400/375 by .1"
Maybe use the belt dimensions of the 400/375 for ability to get brass and the tooling is already there at Qual Cart.
If you wanted it could be 2.5" and be a never was 400 belted rimless Nitro Express for nouveau nostagia (Oxymoron yes) althouh the 400 Purdey or bpe was 3" long. Anyone want to belt a 9,3x74" for a true 400 belted rimless NE?
