a bastardized 404

boom sticka bastardized 404
o.k. i made a dummy round of a shortened neck 404 jeffery. it has a caliber length neck, should (fingers crossed) work in a win mag action, has no wildcat brass forming and stamp issues.
just lop off .2" and presto...
advantages...large case smaller cheaper rifle no belt no headstamp issues (can go to africa noooo problem) no brass forming cool 404 jeffe nostalgia. is it worth it???? maybe not.
that neck was tooooooo long anyway.
praise?
criticism?
the 416 a.r. is much better (cheap brass and better performance) but this is kinda neet plus there is no 423 a.r. yet
10 March 2006, 15:35
jeffeossoand if you stuck the bullet a little deeper in the case of a fullsized 404, it's POOF! the 10.5 (or 10.75) x68 which fits in a standard action
and still go 3$ brass and $1.25 "plinking" .423 bullets

boom stickyeah that is why the 416 a.r. is the better way but the short neck 404 is kinda neet though

ACRecurveboomstick,
That looks like a great idea to me! I'm surprised no one has done it...
My 404 is built on a CZ550 action that started life as a 375 and I really like it. I'm glad I didn't see this before I did that or I might have sumpin different!
Are you gonna build one of these? Keep us posted!
Good hunting,
Andy

boom stickI AM SUPPOSED TO CLOSE ON MY NEW HOUSE TODAY SO FUNDS WILL BE SCARCE FOR THE NEXT FEW MONTHS...WENT IN OVER MY HEAD WITH THE HOUSE SO IT WILL BE AWHILE BEFORE I WILL HAVE GUN MONEY. THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENT

boom stickthe short neck 404...the nostalgic classic africa cart for the common man. 7mag ruger mkII $400 used rebarrel rechamber $600 $1000 total am i missing something??? yes the brass and bullets are a tad expensive but hey...cheap jeffery
brass $1.62 at midwayusa. beartooth bullets sells 50 gas checked 380 gr. 404 bullets for $13 (26 cents a pop)for "plinking"
so factoring 26cent bullets and powder and lets say 10 times usage out of the brass you are looking at roughly $1 to $1.25 a go and you dont have to tell your friends its a short neck 404 unless you want to. lets face it loaded 404 ammo is expensive so the reloader has a big advantage here. the reloader should have no problem getting the short neck 404 to 2300 fps with 400 gr bullets but i would use the 380 gr north fork cup and flat point solids and the 380 gr soft nose. bear, buff, whatever...
11 March 2006, 17:18
jeffeossoExcellent news on the house... need to make a deal with you with to not buy "things for the house" for at least 6 months... seriously
Again, congratulations...
you have reinvented the 10.75 (or 10.5)x68 .. which is about 3.189 oal in factory trim... and if loaded to 55k psi, it will take a 400gr bullet to 2250.. somthing like a factory jeffery at that point...
and left in the dust by the 416 AR... by 250fps

boom stickthanks for the congrats...we had a delay. it is a first resale in a new community (a p.u.d. or planned urban development)which is always a #$%@$ to get appraised the funders are sending a second appraiser over so maybe monday this will be put to bed.
yes the 416 a.r. is superior but this has the kinda neet factor going for it.
the 10.75x68 is similar but this has the more avaliable and cheaper 404 brass. i would rather shoot a 404 (albeit short neck) than a virtualy obsolete 10.75x68 say both at the range ond one will get you a reaction of oh! cool and the other a confused look not that i am in need of approval. the 404 has just kinda grown on me. i think the 404 does that. it is not a "wow! gotta have that" kinda reaction round its a o.k. thats kinda neet and then it sneaks up on you with its lore and feeding strengths.
anyway some may like the idea of turning a beat up 7mag into a classic african gun (yes the slight bastardization is a given)
i look forward to having a 470 a.r. blr and a stainless ruger 416 some day. this is behind those and a few others.

jeffeossookay.. so now you have a 404 that's shoot short necked brass...
or a REALLY cool round, that is totall correct in marking and chamber...
brass is all of 2 cents more

There was a .338-404 at the reloading page of this forum. The cartridge had a .404 case topped with a .338-caliber bullet.

First of all nice thinking ,Boom Stick. Love your approach. Why do I say that? Because I use a .358 X .404 IMP mod 98 single shot mauser. Sow's ear to silk purse approach and let the experts eat cake or what ever.

Bwana-beOnly thing, don't think you can fit many semi-spitzers into that .43" nose. Nice to have closer to .70" unless you're into RN's.
No reason you couldn't trim the case to 2.65" or so, then go. You'd have -what?- about a .41" neck according the that drawing. Not like you could chamber 404 cases in it anyway, right?

boom stickyeah you could trim it down some but i think spitzers on a 404 is like mixing polkadots and plaid...the 404 is meant to be an under 250 yards rifle

but it is an option...that was my first idea but most here would want a caliber length neck. either or, to each his own.

as long as i can feed those two north forks that would be o.k. with me.

DO WHAT?
wait a second...
that would be a "pure" concept 404... "under 250"... but I thought this was a BASTARDIZED 404....

Bwana-beTake a look at those NF 380's. I don't think they will fit w/o trimming the case. They're over 1.4" long, and that nose looks to be close to half of it. Trim it and you still have no prob with the RN's or FP's.
And that case ought to give you over 2400 with a 380 I bet.

thanks bwana-be...
those two plus some cast beartooth bullets for plinking would be it for this round.
i guess this only appeals to those who like the idea of a 404 at half the initial cost with no wildcat forming and stamp issues.
if anyone tries to make one just let me know...

Bwana-beWell, yeah. That's what I'm talking about. It's 1.42" long or so. What percentage of that length is nose? You only get .48" for your cartridge.
