338-350 Rem Mag, I have thought about this for years. Anyone ever hear of one?? I was thinking about it instead of the 338 fed in a 15" Encore bbl.

I used to know a fellow that had one in a MOA pistol with a 14" or 15" barrel. He claimed amazing ballistics. He was pushing 225's to 2400 FPS which sounds awful fast for a pistol. The last I saw him he had killed a moose with it in Alaska and was very happy with the performance. He moved away a few years ago.

Have you heard of the 338 RCM, may be what you are looking for, new by Hornady.

A 338-06 or one of its improved versions would be better, or a 338GNR, which is chambered by Gary Reeder and is based on the 405 winchester case. Dies, properly headstamped brass and loaded ammo is available and will push a 225gr at 2500fps in a 15" bbl. I have one with a stainless heavy tapered 16" bbl, of which 2" is muzzle brake. Why deal with the hassles and expenses of other wildcats.

I hadn’t heard about the other 338 rounds. I will have to look into them. I already have a 338-06 rifle.

As to Gary Reeder and his, I shouldn’t form an opinion on one e-mail but I have. I e-mailed Gary Reeder several years ago with a question. I asked about an auxiliary cylinder in .22 LR for my S&W 53 .22 Jet. The reply I received was "the S&W 53 is a center fire and can’t be converted to rim fire". No other info. Well I KNOW some of them were made with .22 LR cylinders from the factory not to mention the inserts for shooting rim fire rounds in the .22 Jet cylinders. I figured that if they don’t know what the S&W 53 is and that it has the rotating firing pin on the hammer and is used for both center fire and rim fire then I don’t want them touching anything I own or am planning to own. So for revolver work I go to Hamilton Bowen and for Encore work I go to either E. Arthur Brown or SSK Ind.

338 rcm

the 338 bullets tend to be longer from tip to canalure so you want an under 2.1" case. the 338 rcm case is 2.015" and the 300 is 2.1" so if you need a wildcat do a necked up 300 for max capacity just make sure the max oal will work or just use the 338 rcm the 338 rcm has 68 grains capacity so it is n par with the 338-06 but hornady magic powders push it fast. the 300 rcm has 72 grains capacity and if you neck up a tad more. now what i wanted them to do was a 2.17" (smelengthas the 350 em mag) 358 version for a close to 80 grans capacity case.

Why? The .338 Win is about as well balanced as a short magnum can get. A wildcat should fill a gap, or replace a need, not just be something different. Now I'm in trouble

Actually OAL isnt an issue as I would be using it in a 15" Encore barrel. So bullet seating depth an all would be moot (except for chamber throat).

the now deceased Norm Thompson of colorado springs colorado shot a 338/350 rem mag. it was built ona 20" douglas barrel and a winchester action.
norm was flagg brothers barrel smith for years and a gunsmith instructer for the denver school of trades.

norm shot deer, elk and antelope with that rifle using a 200 gr hornady at just over 3000 fps.

the rifle had a metal butt plate, worst i have ever been hurt by a gun in my life.
