Has anyone seen or shot-a 475 Alaskan-
orsame 475 on the 50 EX case-in a Winchester
1886 or Model 71?

Being a new dog on the block.

Have carried two 450s and a 50 :all on
Model 71s.Hawk bullets work!
There was a thread awhile back...2005

Harry McGowen-St Anne, Il says he can do it on a 71.
If you ever look thru PO Ackley's Vol I-he mentions a 450 Fuller-kin to the 450 Alaskan.
Its for real-
I have one on a pre-war Deluxe Model 71-
excellent work-accurate and reliable-22 in hvy bbl-came from the interior of Alaska near Minchumina.

the 475-50 alaskan has been done...

i had the idea to do the 475 on 50-110 a while back, you can do a search on it...i have not heard of it being done yet but the problem is being limited by the preasure of the 1886 rifle. if done on the browning blr it would rock! you could go up to 55,000 psi instead of about 35,000 in the 1886. i think it will be cool either way. or do it on the ruger # 1

here is one of the threads...

right now i am doing the 475 a.r. able to push the 500 gr 475 bullet @ 2,300 fps.

you might want to consider that...able to work in the browning blr too.

How about a .50 Alaskan? I had McGowen build one on a Remington Rolling Block action, 25 inch bbl.
It would shoot as accurately as you could...I used
about 700 gr. hard cast, gas check bullets...
lots of fun, destroyed the background behind the targets.
Best Regards,

Thanks for the advice and input.

One of the challenges to either the 450-348
and/or the 50 Alaskan is the internal action machining that must be done to insure smooth and reliable feeding. A 50 AK or 50-110 case
just will not feed through an un-modified 71 or 1886.The 450 Alaskan/Fuller need less work.

Part of the problem is the improved straight-wall case and the length. Combined-it will not feed.
One of the old tests on old "original " 50 EX 1886 rifles was to carry dummy 50 EX rds to the gun shows-if they would not feed-it was a fake
50 -real barrel-on another cal 1886.

I am sure that any 475-50 Ex would be the same.
Winchester marked its barrels as 50 EX most of
the time-though this is the same as 50-110.
There were other loadings too-same case-just different bullets/powder weight.

I may stick by my 450s. I would really not like to give up accuracy for a slight improvemet in diameter with a 475. On the other hand...
The other factor is the increasing value of
71s and Winchester 86s ;Alaskans prefer Winchester early rifles-but the expense is off
the map combined with gunsmithing.
