jeffeosso458 SOCOM -and loads
Okay, I am building a 458 socom on a savage 10 .. it will be a stubby, and likely only going to use rem 405gr at various speeds..
but, i couldn't decide .. big bores? other than being .458, it isn't a major caliber, unless it is in modern military rifles, where it clobbers the 5.56, and a stubby bolt gun isn't a modern military platform...
i heard a rumor that it is going for saami registration , but till then, it is certainly a wildcat.
anyone care to share experiences, results, and even loads?

N E 450 No2I have killed a few deer and a few pigs with my AR in 458 SOCOM.
My longest shots have been deer at @135 and 145 yards, and a big wild pig at @150 yards.
I say @ because I am too lazy to look up the exact distance as I lazered them before I shot]
I have also made shots @50 to 100 yards as well.
I have used the 300gr Remington HP, the 300gr Hornady HP and the 325gr Lever Evolution.
All of these bullets killed great.
However:
I think I like the 325 LE bullet the best, so I have standardized on it.
I am using H-110 powder because I have some of it on hand, and also my AR has the carbine length gas system.
I like the cartridge, especially in the light weigh Wilson AR I have. It is very accurate and kills very well, with very low recoil.
Another advantage of the 325 LE bullet, is since it is pointed it would feed great in your bolt rifle.

packrattusnongratusI'm just wishing for the money to afford an upper. Wish I could help you Jeffe. But the 10 might be the best way to go for me too.

N E 450 No2Also I would use a 1 in 14 twist, [that is what my rifle is, if I remember correctly],just in case you want to shoot 500gr Hornady Softs subsonic, especially suppresed.
The cartridge uses magnum handgun primers, and is easy to load for.

N E 450 No2Guys, as much as I like hunting with short light bolt rifles, I can say that I think that the 458 SOCOM is best in the AR platform.
It is light, handy, accurate, and takes what ever kind of optic you like, and also it is easy to attach a light or two for night hunting of pigs and varmints.
It has become one of my favorite hunting rifles.

N E 450 No2Another also...
My SOCOM is a "two barrel set".
I have a second upper for it in 223.
I switch between the two uppers on the deer lease as the need arrises.
In fact just yesterday, and the day before, I killed a couple of big turtles here on my pond at home with the 223 upper.
I have killed three coyotes, and a bobcat with the 458 SOCOM as well.

jeffeossoTony,
I understand where you are coming from, it is neat in an ar package ... so is my 308

I've had opportunity to shoot Harry's, and it is COOL ... but i am a bolt action guy, dyed in the wool.
and scottish, which means avoiding that 900 in the full cost of the upper.. my goodness, the BOLT for a 458 is over 200 bucks, (not bcg, just the bolt) from sbr... the same part "bolt head" on a savage is 25.99 from midway ...that part killed the ar for me ..
besides, it will be fun to compare groups in a bolt gun vs ar with the same ammo

14 March 2014, 08:22
boom stickThe 458 super short from our patron saint of terminal performance is a sweet round to consider. If you held one of his super shorts with a short barrel and light stock you will fall in loooove. Handles like a bb gun being so light and short. So fun to shoot! Good luck on the 458 SOCOM if you still go that route.
14 March 2014, 09:38
N E 450 No2boom stick has a good point. IF I was going with a bolt rifle, and did not have an AR in 458 SOCOM, with the need to share ammo, then I do not see the need to restrict a bolt rifle to the short AR15 length SOCOM round.
I would talk to Michael and use a longer case with the ability to get more power.
Or to keep it simple, with the ability to use factory ammo go with the 450 Marlin...
The beauty of the SOCOM is that it fits into an AR 15/M16 sized rifle...

jeffeossowithout a doubt, it is a good fit in an AR . and a 223 boltgun chassis ..
in most cases, i find boltguns to bore accurate, with exceptions both ways..
anyone load the 405s subsonic and try them for accuracy?
15 March 2014, 06:07
max(hm2)not yet, i am waiting for the gov't for approval for the can. i got a bunch of remington 405's, cases and a few pounds of powder. my goal is to work up an accurate sub sonic load that will function through the ar with the 405 bullets

jeffeossomax
I like the way you are thinking! i will likely do a holo sight for daytime, though the n550 works fine in daylight, it doesn't really allow for close and personal
15 March 2014, 15:17
fireball168Check your email, I just sent all I have - including my 405 bolt gun data.
450 Bushmaster bolts are much less expensive and function well with a little bit of extractor work.

jeffeossoThank Fb! Good stuff. I will have two adorable but niche petite rifles the 30 Mauser destroyer and the 458 socom... Both of which can shoot big bullets slowly

packrattusnongratusI'm still watching this. Shot the upper, assembled with some parts from Wilson Combat yesterday. Adjusted the gas block, sighted it in, now need to get a trust set up.
04 January 2015, 16:03
max(hm2)the can got here the other day. first work up a minimum load so the gun functions- then worry about accuracy above that level. now I play the weather game now that winter has arrived.
06 January 2015, 06:19
jeffeossolife got in the way.. again .. i should come to expect that..
I have most of the parts.. just need a weekend to assemble

matt salmI was planning on doing the same thing, I have a few 458 blanks and am going to build one on a Rem Model seven and another on an AR platform.
Shoot straight, shoot often.

Hi, Jeff. Finally got the darn thing running right; the gas tube was cocked and dragging on the bolt carrier.
I had a quantity of 500 gr sub-sonic 458s but no 405s. With my 500s you can stand in the lodge parking lot and shoot at the gong. About 440 yds. At the count of three fast seconds, dirt splashes about 10 feet in front of the backstop. That is if you hold about 10 feet above the gong

"Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

jeffeossoHarry,
Was the nut turned and pushing on the key?
Speaking of the gong .. i can't quiet remember how far that is .. I must be missing the place!
hec, 440 yards would be hard for me with a 308!
09 January 2015, 17:50
tiggertateYep, the barrel nut. One you get dialed in, 440 isn't hard on an 18" gong. Except with subsonics

packrattusnongratusJeffeosso. Did you get the time to put the bolt gun together?
19 January 2015, 21:12
jeffeossoI received the (unchambered) barrel the other day .. but haven't spent 5 minutes considering the next steps to work -- I'll get it together sooner or later, i reckon...
cheers

matt salmJeff,
Your missing out here...get that thing put together. I finished up one on an AR platform. I used a 458 cut rifled 1-18tw blank from Green mountain (a 35" blank makes a 16 1/2" AR blank and an 18" Model Seven barrel was my rationale). Next up is the Model Seven. I've shot the 300 gr Barnes Original spitzer (45/70) and the Hornady 325 Flex Tips so far with both Re7 and IMR 4198. Only just crono'd the 4198 and the 300's were at 1700 and 325's at 1650's. Accuracy with that GM barrel was very acceptable. Range was 60 yards, groups at 1" with the flextips and 1 1/2" with the 300gr Originals. Now to open up the bolt face on a model seven action and get a light 18"er done. They are F-U-N fun and I'll be trying it out on hogs around the end of Feb. I went with the 18 twist as I really have no desire for silencer stuff and these will just be good short range (150 yards), thick cover deer and hog guns.
Shoot straight, shoot often.

hogfarmerBeen using the Socom for a few years now. Really like the 300 grain Barnes TTSX and H10/Win 296 powder. Tight chambered 1-14 twist McGowan barreled AR.

fireball168Have you worked on the magazine box yet?
Stumbled across these photo's last night while cleaning up my Photobucket. Can send you some dimensions if needed, but I suspect you'll figure it out if you haven't already.
