ShortandFat338 - 375 Ruger
Guys
Just picked up a rough condition 2nd hand stainless Ruger in 338 Win Mag, the barrel is shot out. I'd like to keep it in 338 calibre. But the thought of a standard 338 WM bores me to tears
I already own a 375 H&H and a 416 Ruger, but I thought i would make this one a 338/375 Ruger. I have about 100 375 Ruger cases at home that I was keeping for a rainy day
So bring on the 338 / 375 Ruger
I'm looking to make it a simple neck down process, no neck turning or anything complicated.
Can you tell me who has the reamer specs for this wildcat ?
Who would have the dies to match?

boom stickThe 24 hour campfire website folks have a version of the 338-375 Ruger called the 338 Campfire. I think a simple neck down will leave you a poor neck length.
Another good cat is the 338-300 Win
Good luck!

capowardI did a quick down n dirty and it appears a straight neck down 338-375 Ruger would have a 0.2784” neck length – 82.366% of caliber. The .375 Ruger has a 0.3052” neck length – 81.386% of caliber so you should be fine with the straight neck down. FWIW – the .300 WinMag’s neck length is 85.649% of neck length.
I believe Pacific Tool & Gauge has the chamber specifications for a .338 based on the .375 Ruger case though other reamer manufacturers may also have the information. You might give Dave Kiff a phone call – or inquire through their website:

boom stickIf loaded to 3.65" the 338 campfire should have a decent useable case capacity splitting the difference between a 338 lapua and 338 win

ShortandFatThanx Gents
Sent an email to PTG to ask what they have on record for this conversion,
I think I could knock up some dummies with a set of 338 RCM dies, short stroked, this would act more like a necking die but should work.
Now where did I get the idea that Jeffe was going to build a 338 on the Ruger case?

jeffeossoi do want to build a 340 AccRel -- case capacity of a 340 weatherby, ballastics of a 338 winmag, pressure of a 30/40!

Jeffe, looks like a chap has just done it at the end of last year and over Christmas, using the Ultra Mag case
his case specs are a lot like the AccRel, there are case drawings and volume calculations
I think it's called the 338 SIN

woodsYou will be able to use a 338 RCM FL die to neck size and a 375 Ruger FL die to bump the shoulder back. I don't think you will be able to use a 338RCM neck sizing die to downsize the neck since the forcing cone inside the die is not as beveled as the FL die. I know this because I have been preparing to rechamber one of my 300 win mags into a 30/375 Ruger and use the following:
375 Ruger FL die with expander removed
338RCM FL die with expander removed
300RCM neck sizer with expander
300 win mag........30/375 Ruger........375 Ruger
Will make a very interesting wildcat and should have a case capacity of ~94 grs
338 win mag ~86 grs
338/375 Ruger ~94 grs
340 Wtby ~98 grs
338 RUM ~110 grs
Might be able to get by without a muzzle brake if you keep the weight of the rifle up
Should not have a feeding problem right out of the magazine. I rebarreled a 264 win mag into the 375 Ruger and have had no feeding problems with no modifications.

ShortandFatLooks like I might have at least 2 other mates here in OZ willing to give it a try.
The reamer - we are thinking of getting the REAMER done with 375 Ruger base and body, and the 338 RCM specs from the shoulder up.... They are slightly different the RCM only has a 30deg shoulder,
Hopefully we can just carefully use the 338 RCM dies to neck/shoulder resize and a 375 or 416 Ruger die to bump the body back, so no special dies needed.
