475 on 458 Win Mag?

jackfish475 on 458 Win Mag?
Is there a 475 based on the 458 Win Mag case? It would just be a 458 Win Mag straightened out a little to accept the .475" bullet. If it exists has anyone penned a name for it?

Paul HI have no doubt that it has been done, but I've never heard of someone claiming a name for it. There is the 470 Capstick which is the full length H&H case.
I was going to do one on the 458 win mag case, as I have several .475" bullet molds, but I came across a great deal on a used Ruger 458 barrel, so it was cheaper to build another 458 Lott.
I think doing one on a 2" case in a short action would be a dandy use for cast bullets. 460 gr @ 1800-2000 fps should be no problem

SabotA short capstick is a good idea as there are several 500 gr .475 bullets out there that are 0.20 inches shorter than the typical 500 gr .458s. This gives a whopping 8 gr increase in case capacity.
Speer gets the same increase in 458 case capacity with their 500 gr tungsten solid and their manual shows 2260 fps and 5700 FPE for that load...78 grs AA2230. The increase in bore diameter would net you about 2310 fps for 5930 FPE, right there with the Lott.
Sectional density would be .316, higher than the 250 gr 338 Win Mag, so penetration would be excellent.
With the advent of the 480 Ruger, there are some very good pistol bullets available from 275 to 400 grains for reduced load woods hunting so this would be a flexible round as well. The 275 gr Speer is a plated non-expanding type and you could drive it 3000 fps with Lil'Gun for yuks. Twist rate could be as slow as 1 in 24.

Bent FossdalAnd a beauty it would be, with the Capsticks ghost shoulder and two-die set. Damn, I want one!Or the 480grs .465 bullet from H&H's new belted., but that would require custom reamer and dies...

Jeffe,
I looked up on this old thread, and it made me giggle like a girl......
How can a short Capstick be UGLY when it is a perfect scaled down .550 Express???????

Bent FossdalJeffe,
I see, but then you have just squeesed a .475 into a .458 case..... Set up blown out and seized in a proper fl-die with a ghost-shoulder it would look just like a .550 Express...?

RogerJeffe,
Would there be enough case left to headspace on if a 300 WSM case were used with a 475 slug?

Paul HA 300 WSM necked up to 475 would basically be a short version of our 475 AR round, which is the rem ultra mag case shortened to 2.6", necked up and the shoulder pushed back. On the shorter 2.1" WSM case, you'd get a very slightly larger shoulder, so if it will work on the full length round, it'll work on the shorty.
As a platform to shoot heavy cast bullets, and plink with the various pistol bullets in 475, I could see the 475 WSM as an interesting setup. As a true credible 475 for a dgr, the WSM case just doesn't have the powder capacity, and you don't want a short light action for a rifle capable of pushing 500 gr @ 2200 fps.
