is there any problems with doing a 2" or 2.1" 375-284 by using a 376 steyer reamer and dies??? ream to 2" or 2.1" and the base will be correct and use shortened 376 dies. benefits... std .470" bolt face use a true short action load long in a long throated chamber for 376 steyer performance in a true short action. no custom dies or reamers. 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. Hey, Boss...the 375-284 has been around for a long time, since shortly after the 284 was introduced. You can rent reamers for it at Reamer Rentals and buy dies at CH4D. Why go to all the bother of doing the math to see if the Steyr body matches the 284 specs, unless you have already done that and happen to have a 376 Steyr reamer handy. Several Savage 99 have been modified to handle the 375-284 as have many SA rifles. I almost rebored a long throated 284 rechambered from 7x57, way long time ago, but something else caught my eye before getting to it. Wish I'd done it now. Very good idea, tho'. I'm still mulling over what to do with a Brit Lee Enfield 2A action and that particular cartridge is on my list. Working through the cost numbers game and required mods right now. Which one to do...45-70, 450M, 444, 375-284, 375-WSM, 375-358, 358 W, 358-284 etc. All have their merits and whoa's. $150 for new barrel blank and reamer and minimal mods for some...and major mess around for others, or $150 for rebore, then 39 bucks for cost of rental reamer. WHAT TOO DO????? Too much coffee in the AM starts me down that idea road and gets me wired up way beyond where ANY reasonable person fears to go. Enyoy

Yes...the case heads do match...and the Steyr case could be resized and fire formed to fit... but..."WHY" ???? Too much mess'n'round when you could just use the parent, already been there, 284 W case or if you really wanted to go up town, go slightly bigger...any modern 404 Jeffery case clone, WSM, WSSM and so forth. Almost, but not quite a modivied 376 Steyr. Dies and reamers are available for several clones that would work in a SA. Besides the Steyr is a proprietary case and last time I looked they wanted an arm and you last born for only 10. I'm way to cheap to go that route. Shoot...if you really want to get down I know of a 45 cal WSM called the 450 Yukon that will really get your juices working, and a 416 WSM Of course you could also use the modified 376 and put your moniker on it. You go ahead, then let us know how it turns out. It would be an interesting project. FOOBAR

Case heads of .376 Steyr I have measured are .501"however, none of the new .284 Win.have measured are over .494"(.4938" minimum). .500" may be the maximum diameter allowed for the base of a .284 Win. but .494" is reality. Clymer Tools list the base dia.of the .376 Steyr reamer as being .5083",base dia. of the 284 Win. reamer as .501". WC
