I had a 9x57 English gun with half round and half octogon barrel..Lovely gun but the bore was damaged and it shot about 8 inches at 100 yds... I have had it rebored to 9.5x62 (9.3x62 necked up to .375 cal.) and it should come very close to the .375 H&H balistically... Does anyone have any load data on this round as I can find none. I suppose I can use the 375 Scoville or even the 9.3x62 for starting loads, but thought I would check and see if anyone else has any experience with this round... I have been told it has about 2 grs. more powder capacity than the 375 Scoville???? I made some fireforming rounds by using 9.x62 primed brass and running the neck thru a .375 die and seating the bullet with a 9.3x62 die..so I have 3 fired cases to send to RCBS or Hornady for dies. The neck opens up real easy. Thats where I'm at right now, just need load information. Ray, I have a 375 hawk/scoville I can give you a water capacity, say, to the base of the neck if that helps.

370 Sako Magnum? 375-370 Sako? 375 Howell? Maybe design the reamer so you use 9,3x62 dimensions but make the neck longer to 2.54" giving you a .405" long neck for maximum case capacity at crimp grove to max out the 3.34" magazine. Form the longer cases from basic brass or just neck up and load long. Call it the 9,5x65 or 375 Atkinson or something like that. Smart and easy. With that longer neck you are looking at about 79 grains case capacity or the same as the 376 Steyr for load development. 300 @ 2450 fps 577 BME 3"500 KILL ALL 358 GREMLIN 404-375 *we band of 45-70ers* (Founder) Single Shot Shooters Society S.S.S.S. It is already a 9.5x62 just a necked up 9.3x62 and I have the specs on the 375 Scoville, and my Smith said it would take about 5% more powder than the Scoville..?? Dennis Olson used a 9.3x62 reamer with a 375 neck cutter..I am at the point of needing reloading information but apparantly no one has ever made this caliber, why I have no idea, it was easier than an 375 Taylor and holds 4 down in the magazine and required very little action work..Neat looking round that will have a little more velocity than the 9.3 would have so it should be right up there with a 375 H&H. or close enough to suit me.. Actually I'm not much into wildcats these days, been there, done that..but just didn't have anyplace to go with this on under the circumstances. Iggorock, Thanks for the information..Useing the scoville fireforming load of 54 grs of H4895 I worked up to 61 grs. of IMR-4895 with a 300 gr. hornady RN, 210 Federal primer in Lapua cases and the cases show absolutly no sign of pressure and showed .001 expansion, round primers, and no indentions, I quit there as it seemed like I might be pushing it, so thought I would bring out the chronograph before going any further..My safe loads seem much hotter than Scovilles.????????? This old mauser weighed 5 lbs and recoil was horrilbe, snappy and hard. It broke out the stock in the tang so had to glass bed, add cross bolts and releave the tang and I intend to restock it at some point. But, in the meantime I added 2.5 lbs of lead in the butt and forend and brought it to 7.5 lbs and its shootable now..With irons I got 1.5 to 2 inch groups at 75 yards so am having Dennis Olson make me some rings to fit the claw bases. I would appreciate if you could send me your loading data for the heavy bullets.. I have 9,3x64 Husqvarna. It weights about 9 lbs with scope and it´s quite OK to shoot with RWS 293 gr bullet factory loads. But I´m always interested in all wildcat calibers too

An update on my 9.5x62, I have restamped it to 375x62 so someone down the road doesn't shoot 9.3x62 cartridges in it... I have done a lot of chronographing and handloading for this rifle by the seat of my pants but I'm an old retired wildcatter so all is well so far!! I can absolutly duplicate my 375 H&H for all practical purposes plus it holds 5 down with a tad of tinkering by meself!! My std. load is a 300 Gr. Hornady or Woodleigh at 2531 FPS average of 10 shots taking out the high and low. I reloaded a single RWS case 15 times without failure and that case is still almost useable, but the primer pocket a bit loose so I quit. The old stock (Birch) dyed to look like Alkanet root with grain painted in and it looked good, but was suffering dry rot..I patched it up several times as recoil was splitting it out in the tang, but at last it could not take the punishment of the 5.5 pound gun even though i added 2.5 pounds of lead to the forend and butt..Its now a pattern stock and I'm restocking the rifle with my Jack Hogue pattern, a new rust blue, and complete restoration to compliment the newly rebored barrel, Its going to be a beautiful rifle, slim trim, accurate and looks great with the full length rib and the beautiful bottom metal that has the trigger guard that goes up the grip. The fine engraving is subtle and not overdone and Dennis Olson is making a set of low claw rings to fit the originals. Its and exciting project and a most impressive wildcat that has amazed me.. What an exciting project!!! In the article, they reached 2,400fps with a 300 grain bullet. Somewhere between 2,400 and what you reached maybe ideal. I use 59 grains of H4895 to push a 250 grain bullet to 2,700 fps with an extremly low SD & ED in this cartridge. This has been my go to load since the early 90's when it was built. Brass life is great. Seems to drop everything on the spot. Good shooting! http://z-hat.com/Handloader166.htm

Thirdbite, As my original post stated it was one of those old German Guild guns with an incredibly thin barrel and full rib and a splinter stock with schnable forend..I guessed it at 5 lbs. but when weighed it went 5.5, no big deal as for as Im concerned. Had to rebore it to .375 as opposed to 9.3 as the barrel was too rough too clean up for 9.3 as I said, High plains did the work. So then it was even lighter with that metal removed I suspect and it split the original dry rotted stock out big time in my lead sled rest, even at 7.5 lbs..I also split out a old mauser try stock out on the sled. So, I have built a custom stock from a very heavy piece of Turkish walnut and got the weight up to about 8 lbs, glassed, cross bolted, piller bedded and with the claw mounts and a 1x4 Leupold, it may weigh 9 lbs. and it still kicks like a mule, more so than my 375 H&H, but I sure am liking the gun and the caliber so far. Anymore questions or if you want a picture email me and Ill send you one. A picture beats a 1000 words I'm told. I can't post pictures or I would send one too you. Snapper, Apparantly the 9.5x62 with a 9.3x62 case is somewhat longer than the Scoville for whatever reason, perhaps the availability of 06 cases at the time and the fact that they were using it in a Win mod 95 in some cases..Thats an interesting rifel IMO. It appears to me that I have about 6 to 8% more powder (water) capacity than the Scoville for whatever thats worth and probably not much. I am about 100FPS over the scoville with most bullets and loads..For instance I got a heavy extractor mark at 65 grs. of H4895 with a velocity of 2591 FPS, perhaps a slightly sticky case, and primer went in loose on the reloading of that case. so I'm calling 62 gr.s my go hunting load at 2529 FPS average on my last chronograph test with 6 rounds. I have shot a number of these now and accuracy is good and all the signs are good. About what I load my 375 H&H at, but the H&H will get considerably more velocity when loaded to max, probably a 150 FPS more, maby more than than.. My favorite 250 gr. load clocks at 2741 FPS with a 250 Sierra BT.. It will take me another six months to get things all worked out with this round as no loading data is to be had.. Loading data is really not hard. What you have is a slightly shorter 375 Whelen. 62 mm vs 63.3 mm 9.3x62 loads using heavy bullets would also be a good place to start. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.375_Whelen IMHO, if you are attempting to duplicate the 375 H&h with a 300 gr bullets, especially in an old Mauser, you are pushing your luck. Duplicating 9.3x62 performance would be safe and handle anything you'ld hunt with it. 3031, 4895 or 4064 would all work. Barnes data: 9.3x62 250 gr 2546 286 gr 2280 375 H&H 270 gr 2836 300 gr 2735 all MAX ! I'd be starting with 53 gr of 4064 and the 270 .375 TSX. No drama and a sure killer.

45070 shooter, I am not trying to duplicate a .375 H&H. Perhaps I wasn't clear in that I can get an easy 2500 FPS in the 375x62 with H4895..What I am saying is, that is what I load MY .375 H&H at and have had great success on buffalo etc at that milder velocity..I can get 2650 to 2700 FPS with a 300 gr. bullet in my 26 inch barrel. 375 H&H..So I'm not trying to duplicate a .375, only my pet .375 load that is quite mild. In my .375x62, 26" barrel I got 2591 average and those loads were warm and max..BTW, I did have the action on this old Mauser softened to work on then brought it back up to specs. I have my loads worked up that I intend to use and the 300 gr. HOrnady RN and 300 gr. Nosler, along with the 285 GS Custom FN solid and HP will be what I shoot..The 300 Horn. RN and GS Custom flat nose solid is for my iron sights. The GS customs HP and Nosler for the scope.. I shot and reloaded one case 7 times so far with the 300 Hornady and GS Customs solid and the case and primer pocket is still good. I will continue until it shows fatigue.. Best powders so far are: H or IMR-4895, RL-15, H414, IMR-4064 and pretty much in that order. I am pretty high on this wildcat, and I'm normally not a wildcat person these days, been there done that and had a lot of fun. Not much data available for this caliber out there, so thought I would post what I have on it..My basic starting point was to use 9.3 Hawk/Scovill loading data and 9.3x64 data as a I guess you could call it a red flag. I also got a little information that was helpfull from Ackley book and the 375 Whelen Improved. I have 6 to 8 grs. more water capacity than the cases formed from various 30-06s... If I had to change anything I would suggest a much heavier barrel, but I was not willing to trash that beautiful full rib mauser barrel. It is, however, too light for the recoil. Perhaps one day I will add a Mercury recoil reducer or some lead to the forend and butt, who knows? Anyway thats about all I have to add on this as its pretty much wrung out I guess, but as time goes on I will probably come up with more load data and chronograph data information so anyone building this caliber give me an email and I'll be glad to share what I have.
