Will be leaving May 16th for a plains game hunt in Namibia and would appreciate hearing from those who have used and would recommend a taxidermist there.

I have read all the comments, pro and con about African Vs U.S. Taxidermists, but have pretty much made up my mind to have it done in Namibia. So if you have used someone there and liked their work please let me know. It will save me a lot of time not having to be running around Windhoek visiting shops.

Thanks for your help.

I was pleased with the work done by Reiser in Windhoek, though some have posted less stellar reviews. Wilko worked with us to get what we wanted, and then coordinated with Pam Foerster to get everything packed up for shipment out of the country.

What was the time frame that it took to get your work back??? I had skins tanned and hides prepared for shipping but I am having the actual mounts done locally here in Texas. I left them at Reiser in August o6. I got the bill in September 06 and wired them the money they requested and now I do not even get a reply to my e-mail. I'm not worried yet,, just getting concerned,,drwes

DD66,

You'll probably get a lot of different answers for the same places depending on everyone's experiences. For example, I have been to the Nyati shop a couple times and they definitely do good work. I have a few skulls there now and it is looking like it will be at or more than a year to get European mounts home for a springbok and hartebeast as well as a couple wartie plaques. Seems a bit long to me and we have been run around a bit from personnel changes (their explanation). I think all will be ok in the end, but has taken longer than my shoulder mounts done in Namibia by Marlon Beyer (Taxidermy Studio in Otjarawango) and Erongo Taxidermy in Otavi.

Kernel,

The PH from my recent trip put me in touch with Marlon Beyer. Any comments on your experience working with him? I have not committed my work to him for this year, but I am considering him.

Had mine done at Nyati and was very pleased with the work. It did take a while to get the mounts done, but part of that was some foul up where they had my money, but hadn't matched it to my account.

I'm planning on using Nyati for my upcoming hunt in September. How long did it take to actually receive your trophies?

Hunt ended in Aug '05, got trophies at my house just before Xmas '06. I think the money mix-up caused at least 4, maybe even 6 mos of delay though.

Bill & Bill,

I used Marlon back in 2004 to mount a gemsbok, springbok and also for a zebra rug. Marlon was great. Responsive to email when I got home and runs a very, very clean shop. I would certainly use him again. I'd think a dip & pack situation would be no problem.

I'm back in the dust in a few days myself so will honk on the way to Etosha!!! Wink

I could add a few more, but won't. The real screw up was, they boiled our Kudo horns so much, that they are discolored and are cracking. That one made me sick to my stomach. I don't have a pic.

We are heading to Namibia with a larga group(12) in June/July of the summer. At the recommendation of our PH we were going to use Otjawarongo Taxidermy for our dip and pack, then have the work done at home. I tried via e-mail for many months to get information from Otjawarongo on pricing etc. The only pricing they would give after much prodding was for completed work. They did not want to let any work go out via dip/pack only. Some of their pricing was even more expensive than here in the states (giraffe tanning for example). I had a hard time getting any info from them in a timely manner.

I went back to our PH and found he was having major problems with them as well. He said he had stopped doing business with them all together. We were then sent to Retoma Taxidermy to have our dip and pack done. They have been very responsive and helpfull. Based on our conversations along with other positive write ups I think all will be fine.

Do your home work. Too many folks leave things to chance or shop for the cheapest price only to be dissappointed later.

TJ - Why were your items shipped in cardboard? They need to be shipped in treated wood crates.

I used Nyati in Windhoek. I found their opaeration to be very professional and they maintain great communications. Their shop to be clean, modern, and very organized. I haven't seen many here in the US that compare to their operation. The crate I received from them had each item specifically labled, each was well wrapped and the entire crate was foam filled as if one large cube. It was a bit messy to uncrate, but everthing was in perfect condition. I would most definitely use them again.

I did a Google search on Nyati taxidermy in Namibia.http://www.kowasadventure.com/came up as having used Nyati Wildlife Art for their client's taxidermy. Looking at the Nov.2006 newsletter on the web site, indicates they are severing ties with Nyati.Poor communication and not following delivery agreements are cited as reasons.

Ouch !

I will be hunting leopard in june/july with the owner of Otjiwarongo Taxidermy....
You are making me nervous about that. Is it not possible, in case I get my cat, to have the hide d&p and bring it home in my suitcase ??

Maybe a dumb question

Odin, you must have a CITES permit to export Leopard. I'm assuming Norway would require you to have a CITES permit to import to your home? You wouldn't get far with a Leopard skin in your suitcase. They would arrest you and most likely confiscate your cat and fine and or jail you. Here's some help: contact your Government wildlife agency (you may find them on the Internet) and inquire about importing a Leopard from Namibia. Next, your Outfitter/Taxidermist should already know the export scoop. Make sure you have your requirements in order. Otherwise you could lose your Leopard. Namibia exporters seemed to have many problems with shipping things in a timely manner and not over charging you for everything. Personally, I would look into Norway Taxidermists. There are some professionals in your country. Good hunting, LDK

I also visited Wilko Pascheka last month at the Reiser shop. He handled my tanning and shipping from my 2004 trip, my son's trophies from 2005, and has my stuff from this year now. The service has been superb, and without problem. This includes my leopard I just took with Erindi Ranch. I would not entrust that to just anyone, and have 100% confidence in their treatment of trophies. I can say that not all of their mounts I viewed are in poses which are attractive to me, but that is just personal preference. It has nothing to do with quality and the work. We generally like to modify any of the commercially available forms anyway, and add a personal touch. That is just me.

I have seven trophies being dipped and packed for shippment at Nyati at this time from a Aug. 06 hunt. I had a flat Zebra rug tanned and backed and the lot will be shipped this week I hope. It took a few weeks longer due to a mixup on the backing for the Zebra which had to be sent back to the tanner for felt backing. At this writing I am NOT unhappy with the cost, communication or services. I will see the result when the shippment arrives in Anchorage. I have not seen the cost of shipping as yet. Nayti stated they would be sending the package to the shipper this week.

My brother and I are having Marlon Beyer do our dip and pack skulls/horns, and do our mountain zebra skins for wall mounting. Cost of the latter was $236 US. Our PH, Johann Veldsmann of Shona Adventures, told us in advance that having actual mounts done at Marlon's shop was very reasonable but inconsistent, just because Marlon has so many taxidermists working for him. Marlon is expanding his facilities, which are very nice. It is quite something to see, and the main taxidermy building may have several hundred head of game in process of mounting alone on any given day. At this early stage, I have a very good feeling about Marlon's shop.

So sorry for the delay drwes, I sorta lost track of this thread. Others have replied, so it may not mean as much, but I received my trophies from Reiser in a year. We hunted in June 2004 and I received my trophies in mid-June 2005 at my door. Of course, I hunted north of the "vet fence" and my trophies sat in quarantine for about 5 months (required by law to be quarantined "above the fence" for at least 90 days following salt treatment by the operator.

Wilko Pasheka/Reiser Taxidermy has been recommeded to me two years ago by the most iportant trophy shipper in Italy.
I met Wilko, he explained to me all that I must know, he gave me a folder with price list, contracts suggestion etc.etc. AND documents for the outfitter.

I finished to hunt on the first week of July, Johan of Kalahary hunting safaris delivered to Reiser Taxidermy my trophy about ten days later. On the first week of January 2006 I had my trophies in Italy, without problems.

One important point that is out of the hunter control is the delivery time to the taxidermist. I've ben lucky.
Johan has done it more ore less immediately, but he goes to WDK often.

Second: try to meet the taxidermist before start to hunt, and try to follow suggestions and recomandations.

Try to find in your country the importer/shipper, make them give to you the name of the Namibian shipper. If you can meet them. It is not wasted time.

In fact I'll be there on 24th of June and on 25th for sure I'll go to meet Wilko.

This is the case across Africa. Inconsistent quality. Sometimes good, sometimes bad.

I have always said that you are better off having a quality US taxidermist mount your trophies, and I have never found an African taxidermist that proves me wrong.

Some hunters are willing to gamble on the differnce in cost and have it done there.

I am not.

I recently used Namibia Safari Services as the shipper . I asked to pre pay my shipment to Liberty Inter. Newark, NJ and made it a point not to send it to JFK/Meeham as I had a taxidermist friend whom could clear everything for me in Newark. Everything has gone smoothly to this point. My friend called yeaterday to tell me he was notified to make an appt. with homeland Security to clear the box.....I'm waiting on his call to tell me everything got here OK! I had Marlyon Beyer do my D&S and he was unresponsive to my requests as to how long it was going to take. I had to sic my safari operator on him to get it done. Other than the email to request $ from Beyer I never heard from them and will NOT use them again.
