Question for Mozambique hunters. I hunted the Marromeu area in October and took two buffalo and a sable. My outfitter has been unable to get the trophies out to South Africa. His explanations for the delay are starting to ring hollow. He claims rains, floods and communication problems are to blame and the trophies are securely stored in a warehouse in Maputo. This camp has 40 buffalo on permit and, as I was there near the end of the season, those skulls were on the rack at the camp. I'm an old CPA, and am increasingly concerned that the trophy fee money held in trust by the outfitter may be in jeopardy.
Thanks for the comments of those more experienced than I.

Patrick,

First in my experience trophies do not move as fast out of Mozambique as they might from other places and it has only been six month so I would not panic quite yet. Second as Greg suggest get in touch with who is actually storing and shipping the trophies to find out what they know.

It took almost 22 months to get my buff back from Mozambique. No reasons or explanations just lots of time.

+1 but it would be good to know who you hunted with.
If with a reputable Outfit you should be all right.

Many thanks for the comforting responses. I've also received similar comments from a larger adjacent camp outfitter the I reached out to. I'm reluctant to name my outfitter until or unless the issues mature into a real problem. I may be assuming too much regarding the trophy fee trust relationships. Are these outfitters collecting trophy fees to be remitted to the government? If so, 40 buffalo, a few leopards, sables, crocs and hippos will add up to a big trust responsibility for any small operator.

For what hunts cost nowdays, my opinoin is antything over 9 months is unacceptable. If Govts are going to keep raising trophy fees then they better figure out how to streamline the process

All the 3 operators in Marromeu ( south Zambeze ) are top notch.
Even if you do not want to inform the name , i am sure you will not have any problem .

But , i want to correct you , there is not any outfitter in Mozambique that has 40 buffalos on quota.
The operators that have the biggest quota are ZDS Couatada 11 , Marromeu safaris coutada 10, Nyati Safaris
Coutada 14 and Safaris Mozambique From Simon and all of them have less than 40 buffalos on quota.
These operators account for almost half of the buffalos shot in Moz !

And all of them are 5 stars .
I am sure your problem wil not be a problem if coming from these guys.
Cheers

Moz takes a long time. Having all the trophies in the skinning shed at the end of the season is not all that uncommon in certain camps.

I understand your concern. But, nothing you said in your post would concern me. 6 months is nothing in Africa time, especially in Mozambique.

I have been waiting since November 2011 for a buffalo and a hippo and have just been told Mozambique has a problem with cites and getting hippo out. Not sure what to think at this point.

Indi, I understood the outfitter to say they had 40 and were hoping to have 45 for 2013. I may be wrong. If I could figure out how to post a picture, I would post the rack. My count is 21 on the rack, my two and three of other hunters were in the shed, so 26 on display by 10/10.
My concern though, is more born out of my intuition as a CPA. Can anyone describe the "trophy fee" transaction. Does the outfitter remit the entire fee to the government. Are those funds freely commingled with their operating funds. Comments over cocktails raised that little red flag.
Thanks again for your comments.

I count 29 on the rack posted above and that was in October 2012.

As far as quota (and Indi is a better source than I am)...Simon I believe has 35 and Coutada's 10, 11 and 14 have 38 each for the 2012 season. Mahimba has 5-10, Grant Taylor 10-15, the blocks adjacent to Kruger (Sabie) and Gonarezou 5 to 8 each with the remainder in the Niassa Reserve blocks and surrounds.

Yes, that is the rack. I think I recognize my first and largest, 43"x16" boss as the second back on the right, a dugga boy. My second was out of a herd and 37"x15". When were you there and who was your PH?

Wait it out. I think they are going to get the Hippo sorted out.

That picture was taken Oct 26. I was hunting with Zambeze delta. We only hunted Debbie's area for a day and then went back to 12.

I wouldn't sweat it. Like a bunch a guys are saying, its only been 6 months. I haven't heard a word about my stuff and don't expect to for a while.

d.unger, thanks. I spent 10 days in Oct with Debbie, leaving, as I recall on the 10th. I chatted with Mark (Zambeze Delta) earlier in the week and he also said "don't worry". My worry isn't with Deb, but rather my SA outfitter/PH/taxidermist. It's good to know they don't owe $200k in trophy fees. The marromeu and Deb's camp were very special.

Mine in 2011 took exactly one year to the day to get everything back. I figured it would take a year or more, so I didn't stress over it. Hunt was with Grant Taylor, Mashambanzou Safaris.

Do you have a broker you're working with? Perhaps they have other customers experiencing the same issues...

Thanks for posting and thanks for the responses. I'm headed to Mozambique in 2014 and it is best for me and my hunting partner to be prepared for a wait instead of expecting the time frame of the good operators in Zimbabwe. My last batch of trophies from Zim got over here in 4.5 months, last day of hunt to arriving in Chicago. 'Looks like we need to adjust to Mozambique time.

My hunting partner just got an email from our outfitter that his critters are ready to ship from our hunt last October. I'm anxiously awaiting notification about my stuff. Only 6 1/2 months, darn good out of Moz I think.

Be thankful you don't have a hippo going to US now.....MOZI failed to complete CITIES paperwork and USF&W has halted Hippo imports...I believe EU has halted Elephant for same reason....hopefully they will get this resolved soon....lots of people angry over this surprize!!
Be thankful your trophies are in Maputo rather than a few other more onerous places where my trophies were hung up for 6-8 months...and then turned into a big battle over FEES....a real rip off and I simply resolved it by saying I am fully committed to abandoning them as opposed to being ripped off....it worked!!
