Add another to that vote.

Butch, we don't know each other but that was one hell of a story! I'm glad you didn't sustain any more serious injuries than you did. Standing your ground is not something you know about for sure until it happens. Good for you and much respect for handling the situation. salute

I hope you have many more safaris, but without the unnecessary additional excitement!

Cheers,

Todd

At least Butch will be able to keep us lads entertained around the camp fire in a couple of hours time.

You know, Begno, I haven't had a drink in over 16 years. I think I would have had to have had one after that! What an amazing story! I'm glad the injuries weren't more serious.

Absolutely outstanding!!!

I can only hope that if I ever find myself in a similar situation I'll respond as well as you did!

Congratulations to you and Nixon beer

I had a very similar experience in 2004 minus the ass whooping part. We were fortunate to get the bull stopped before he got to us.

NO matter WHAT one of our more "experienced" members on AR says, a double lunged buff does NOT always die right away like he's supposed to.

Mine took two .470's through the lungs and twenty minutes later had enough juice left to try and deliver a first class butt whooping.

I'm glad you are alright brother! Great story and keep up the good work.

PS

After it happens to you it kind of dispels that blowhard theory about "just shoot them in the brain" they'll drop right there.

A. Putting one in the brain is not as easy as it sounds.

B. Especially when they are coming hard and the head is bobbing and weaving and you've got about one micro second to get it done.

Always works in the movies though! Cool

“ ONCE A CAPE BUFFALO PUTS TOGETHER A CONCENTRATED CHARGE, YOUR OPTIONS HAVE BEEN WOUNDERFULLY SIMPLIFIED! YOU KILL HIM OR HE WILL KILL YOU! Peter Hathaway Capstick

I guess old Peter wasn’t so inept as some made him out to be, after all!

Some times they simply don’t know they’re dead and simply do not stop if the CNS is not hit perfectly! Unlike some other game buffalo rarely will be turned once adrenalin starts flowing in his veins! If the CNS is not hit directly he will usually keep coming, hence the quote by PHC!

Butch that is a hunt you will never forget I assure you, and you will not value a 50 inch buffalo more that the trophy you now have! Glad you guys got out with no more injury than you did! Could have been a real finisher! The chance that these things can and do happen is the reason we hunt dangerous game! I can say you have been tested my friend, and you handled yourself well! Good show my friend!

May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.

I missed it too. I can't believe I have not seen this before.

I guess we all wonder what we will do when the defecation hits the oscillating rotary device. It looks like you found out.

Well done. I am happy you are able to tell the story. Congratulations.

I do have to wonder about the premium softs. I tend to think they would impart more shock. Would those shots close to the brain have stunned him more, therefore slowing him down a little? Interesting question but we will never know.

Congrats again!!!!

I have not seen this thread before it resurfaced now.
Very good report and great trophies, and I am very impressed with how you acted in the very dangerous situation.

You are a man I without a doubt would trust in any dangerous situation.

Merry Christmas and I hope you will have a great year of hunting in 2012 tooSmiler

My first buffalo charged me at the end. And I didn't wear my brown shorts that day. We were considerably more lucky than you were. Glad that all is well and it does make for memories, doesn't it? Great hunt and great report. I'm jealous, not of the damage to the body but the adrenalin level that must have produced.

GREAT REPORT!!!!!!
One of the reasons I hunted buff back in Sept. was to test my metal, to see if I had what it took to face black death. I am happy to say that I passed that test.
Now I'm glad I was not faced with a charge, as running & screaming like a little girl would not do ones ego any good.

I missed this one originally as well, so I am glad it resurffaced. Great hunt report, and congratulations, I am sure the mermories of that hunt will last a lifetime. I have not hunted buff as yet, but reading this has re-enforced the reason this is on my bucket list. Not that I want a charge, but the adrinalin rush that the possibility provides would, I think make one appreciate every breath that much more. Well done sir!
