Hey fellas
If you shoot a big enough one you don't have to sit a mile behind them to make them look good!!!!!

The photo setup is important for making the trophies look good and bigger - some do it better than others.

I say more power to them, but IMO, we should include the ~SCI score or horn length. Then we know what the true size is. AIU

The only thing that bothers me now is the massive amounts of blood. I've been guilty in the past, but in the Internet/Facebook days, cleaner is better. At the same time, it makes for a classier picture. On the other hand, I understand the butchering of an elephant by the locals for the meat, etc. I guess antis won't understand anything.

Beyond that, it's your damn animal and you worked hard for it (not to mention the price) and should be allowed to pose as you wish.

I agree with these, leave the gun out and smile, hunting is a hobby-sport, it should be fun.

I really can't understand why the rifle should be left out. It seems to me that it played an important part in the killing of the animal. I guess some guys do it to be PC, but I don't understand it.

As far as not smiling in the photo, I almost never smile in a trophy photo. It is not intentional but the moments that follow the kill are full of mixed emotions for me. I don't mind killing an animal, so that does not enter into the equation. I do feel happy because, in killing the animal, I have achieved my goal. This happiness is tempered with the fact that the hunt is now over. Also, on some level I am already looking forward to breaking this wonderful/beautiful animal down into several large chunks of meat. I know that I will enjoy eating the meat and reviling in the memories but it is a heavy moment for me.

I wish I could explain it better, but my point is that I don't refrain from smiling because I'm a jerk, I am simply sorting through some heavy emotions.

I do envy you guys who can whoop and holler, but I guess I am just too introspective for that. I would not care to change but I am happy for those of you who can savor the moment.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Without stepping on anyone's toes, how about a couple of example photos to be added to this thread? Maybe we should keep the photo limited to our own, then no feelings can be hurt, as you will be opening yourself to compliment/critique.

How about those duikers the size of elephants with just the hunters forehead n eye's way back there?

At least when the rifles are next to the animals there's a way to judge the actual size and not have to wonder by comparing an "average sized" hunter laying, or sitting real low way behind.

Good thread I've tried starting the same thing a few other times w/o getting it done.

How about these for different trophy shots? I am particularly fond of the Gemsbok shot. The Ostrich was just fun!
This is the Damaraland, Namibia last September.

Mine didn't, but others do in fact have a hand in their own demise. stir

Andrew , for the national geographic moment you'd have to lose the rifle , take the stick out of his mouth and pretend to hand feed him. All this while commenting that the feeding of the croc creates an energy between you that touches both of you at a level where you can find yourself again.... Roll Eyes

Cool picture .
