Wallabies vs Russia Well, we might have won against Russia but if anyone thought that was how a first grade team wins the World Cup, I suggest you have a stiff drink. The same goes for England. It seems the 2nd tier teams have given all the first tier teams a serious touch up during some part of the games they have played, even though the first tier teams have more often than not ended up the winners. Your thoughts ? .

I think the Cup is wide open, which IMHO is good for the sport, much as I want the All Blacks to win (sorry!). Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Australia also reached the quarter-finals by beating Russia 68-22 BUT forget the scoreline, it was far from a convincing win. They were leading 47-5 at one stage and then slacked off plus the Russians really did put in a good second half. And Deans said "we got what we wanted, qualifying for the QF" !!!! Gregan and Eales said what had to be said afterwards - at least someone doesn't pull punches. Not sure when the QF is, I haven't been looking that far ahead but will do once we know who we are playing. At this stage I'll go for NZ vs SA final on the basis England were also piss poor today. Any comments ? .

No need to be Sorry. In my order, I want 1. Australia 2. England 3. NZ (I feel sorry for them that they haven't won it yet and like Muzza, they need all the help they can get ) .

You might just want to re-think this. http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/cu...1987-rugby-world-cup Home » Culture and Society» Sport» 1987 Rugby World Cup The 1987 Rugby World Cup Page 1 of 7 The 1987 Rugby World Cup Origins of international rugby The long road to the cup Organising the tournament A world cup at last Further information Media gallery 1987 Rugby World Cup Media Gallery Map Locations Eden Park, Auckland Calendar events 20 June 1987 All Blacks win the first World Cup Although international rugby has been played for well over a century, the Rugby World Cup is a relatively recent phenomenon. The first tournament took place in May and June 1987, with games played in both New Zealand and Australia. The final was held at Eden Park, Auckland, on 20 June, where the home team beat France to become the inaugural holders of the Webb Ellis Cup. David Kirk kisses rugby's world cup In a country where rugby is often referred to as a religion, hosting and winning the first Rugby World Cup was certainly a big deal. For much of the 20th century the All Blacks had been regarded as one of the best teams in international rugby, but without a world cup such claims were difficult to prove. The fact that New Zealand has not won the four-yearly competition since 1987 has arguably made that victory even more important to All Black fans. Photographs of captain David Kirk holding the Webb Ellis Cup in triumph are among our most famous sporting images. What is less well known is how the first Rugby World Cup came about. This fascinating story highlights a number of key themes, including the struggle between the amateur ideal and creeping professionalism, tensions between the British home unions and southern hemisphere countries, and international protests over sporting contacts with South Africa. The story begins with a look at the 19th-century origins of international rugby. Next page: Origins of international rugby Von Gruff.

I have always been impressed by the French performance at Rugby, after all it is not a "native" sport. Do they have an active French league? How do they get so good? Having said that, I think every team should do a dance before important games! Where is RSA in all this? they used to be a powerhouse. Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. france has always played Rugby and had some seriously good players in the past (Thierry Lacroix and Jean-Baptiste ??? They also had a blond guy who was superb, can't remember his name. I put them in with the likes of Wales, the best days and best players are in the past but likely to come good in the future, like any cycles in sport. Yes, they have a league but they import a lot of players which probably dilutes the effect somewhat, a bit like the English football / soccer team and the opposite of the NZ All Blacks where they have to play in NZ to be picked. RSA are the quiet acheivers ATM IMHO !!! .

Jonny Wilkinson plays in the French national league for Toulon. Watched a game with Tourbillon (Spelling) few months ago, he kicked a whole lot better than at the moment. My pick, will be an All Blacks vs Boks Final. Will be in the bush for most of the rest of the WC Cheers, Chris DRSS

Stunning upset - France lost to Tonga but still qualified for the QF! If only Tonga had won against Canada...! Australia Vs South Africa QF on 9th Oct at wellington All Blacks vs Argentina QF on 9th Oct Auckland England Vs France QF on 8th Oct Auckland Ireland vs Wales QF on 8th Oct Wellington With Dan carter and Morne Steyne out of the world cup, both SA & NZ are without their best play makers! This Aussie team does not have the really good players like Eals, Gregan, Smith, Larkham, Little, Mortlock, Sharpe etc. But the Aussies always show their "mongrel" against NZ! Rockdoc - NZ v SA is a semi final clash in this draw & only one of them or Australia can make the finals. The other finalist will definitely be a Northern hemisphere team. That's what happens in tournaments Nigel!!! Australia all the way!!! I believe that france has more registered rugby players in their country than does Australia here. The same can be said for the USA (of Australia)... believe it or not and NZ too of course!! Bit of trivia... The local (NBC) station carried the All Blacks vs Canada today at noon. They will also be showing the finals. Well it might not matter what he does with his balls as the other kicker is on 77% success rate and he is also playing. They also had a bit of a kick off. If Wilko is "off" ATM, he should leave it to the other kicker. .

Well, the Wales - Ireland game was very good indeed. Just like I like to see rugby to be played. Ireland might just rue that they didn't take the penalty kicks. Still to finish but looks like Wales might just do it. The Welsh defense was superb = especially the tackling. A few could take a leaf out of their book. And this welsh side is very young so can only improve over the next 4 years. Maybe a new era in Welsh Rugby ? .

Unlucky south Africa & lucky Australia. Very gutsy scrap with heaps of character. I was surprised how well the Argentinians played. My pick for the All blacks is for Crudon at no 10 & Andy Ellis as reserve half back. Tueava should be replaced by Israel Dag. "When the wind stops....start rowing. Aust lucky ? That's and understatement considering the possession percentages. WeeWeepu, now there is a find and a half. He handled it so well (tactics, running and kicking). I wasn't surprised how well they Argies played, they had nothing to lose and they have always played good Rugby, they just can't seem to get up to the next level. they went out with their heads held high, unlike England. Our Aussie scrum half balls'd it up so often. The scrum half was lost most of the time, didn't know what to do. .

Hi Naki and 500N, Yes "we" play all the well we can do. But, today, the Pumas are one step below the very best...! And, yes, went out with their heads high!! PH

PatagonHunter It's not often I give compliments to the Argentinians LOL but I think they put up a damn good fight. The Pumas captain said something about paying the All Blacks more often in practice matches. That will help raise the standard more. Are you Argentinian ? .

What a weekend for rugby with four hard games on offer.Anyone notice that three of the four teams into the semi's have NZ coaches. Wales has really stepped up and are playing a NZ style of rugby that was a treat to watch. When the Puma's enter the four nations and get regular game time against the AU,SA and NZ teams they will be a real force in world rugby. Next weekend will be one not to miss. Von Gruff.

Didn't notice the COACH situation. Deans, Aust coach needed that win because I think the general belief is Aust has under delivered over the last few years. That was the best weekend of Rugby I have seen in years, all 4 good hard matches, "Next weekend will be one not to miss." You don't say !!!! I can't wait. My GF is a Kiwi so it will be on for young and old !!! LOL .

Yes we did No need to skite.......... Other countries play the game, you guys have enshrined it into the national culture from schools up. Thats got to rub off on skills development in both players & coaches , with numbers in the game & opportunities for the best to rise up above their peers when constantly tested at every level of the game. You guys grow 4" and put on 10Kg of muscle when you do the Haka. BUT its all in your own minds. One thing we can be sure of..........next weekend will have another 2 great games of International Rugby. 2 teams will be best on the day & get to run around the paddock again in this Cup.
