North American Aviation RA-5C Vigilante. 18 RA-5Cs were lost in combat during the VietNam war, giving it the highest loss rate of any Navy aircraft in the conflict. It is. 1/32 scale by one of the best. I couldn't fine a photo of a real live G14 as good as this photo of the model in 1/32 scale. Doug Humbarger NRA Life member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club 72'73. Yankee Station Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Doug, You're not a big guy are you? I sat in a 109 when I was in High School and it was a tight fit back then! On the plus side, you sure wouldn't rattle around much in there during hard turns. for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

Lots of history sitting right there. Saw a neat biplane yesterday afternoon flying above Anchorage...someone playing with an expensive toy before winter comes. I don't know my biplanes very well...might have been a Stinson. _______________________________

There was a place in Mudelein, Illinois which was eventually closed down by greedy artless suburban developers as an "aircraft junkyard". This guys likely ex-farmland had a private grass airstrip which he forgot to postcard register as an airfield. Missed the deadline and now he has to apply for formal airstrip permission which at that time, in the early eighties, would not happen. He said he could still take off in his lightplane but even that could be stopped. He blew it. He had an intact P-47 bought in 1947 as a possible Reno style air racer. It needed new bullet proof rubber tanks which was an expensive proposition. He had a Baka bomb, a PB-Y fuselage and two crated eight gun Spitfires which were owned by a north suburban psychiatrist. There were one or two Me-109's of Spanish form with the new engines. I sat in one. Had a temporary plywood seat. a Bit on the tight side. Very thick side windows somewhere in the 40mm range or at least at the point where they partly slid open on the left side. Anyway the uppity new locals didn't like the place and after a legal battle he was told to dispose of everything. I'm sure it is all out there somewhere and likely at the EAA in part.

Reminds me of the little song from Chuck Yeagers book. Don't give me a P-39.. With an engine that's mounted behind.. It will twist, it will roll, It will dig a big hole, Don't give me a P-39.. NEVER BOOK A HUNT WITH JEFF BLAIR AT BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING!

I think you're a bit mistaken with the history here. It was called "Victory Air Museum" back in the 70's. They had a PBY fuselage, a P47 as mentioned (it is now at the Yankee Air Museum in Chino) , an Ohka (aka Baka Bomb), a couple spitfires, and 6 Me 109's in various states. It was owned by a guy named Polidori and a guy named Earl Reinert had most of the planes. He bid on the lot of 109's that were damaged during the filming of "Battle of Britain" and had the largest collection of them in the world at the time. Polidori was killed in the mid 80's in a stall/spin at the airport, I don't know what happened to Reinert but he made some money selling his planes. Which he deserved to, he sure saved a lot of stuff from the scrapyard back when no one else wanted it. I don't know what happened to the museum but I believe the guy sold the strip to someone else who had a stearman. I have flown in and out of there recently as 2001, so I don't know how it has been lately but I think your version has quite a bit of misinformation that needed clearing up. for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

I read the disposition in the Chicago Tribune (maybe the Sun Times). This matter was in some form of litigation for a while. Nonetheless, if it was Mundelein (-ine?) Illinois there would be a legal record. However a judge was quoted as saying it was an aircraft junkyard and that was likely the approach used to close it down - zoning. But these are old recollections taken in part from discussions with the then owner of the place. As I say, find the county the town was in and see if there is a county or State of Illinois record of litigation.

After much thought and reflection the famous (infamous?) Fokker D.VII If I built a replica I even know what engine I'd use to power it.... an EFI 4.9liter inline six cylinder Ford truck engine. Same power, less weight certainly better reliability... Not to mention that large increase in fuel economy would increase range/endurance. a 3:1 reduction box shouldn't be too tough... On second thought and further reflection I've thought of another craft I'd REALLY like to fly..... A Block-II Orion spacecraft with EDS & LSAM modules stacked on and I'd like to perform a Trans Lunar Insertion manuever with it. Just a 5-1/2 minute burn from LEO.... And I even know what music I want playing on the sound system while I ride "eyeballs out" as the thrust pulls me out of my seat against the straps.... Lester Flatt's "Backin to Birmingham" (Which I'd KILL for a copy of...) AD If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day!
