I've hunted boar in Sweden and Germany But it was in France were I got some good shooting in.

Although not the biggest and in many cases not totally wild I think France has the greatest dencity in Western Europe.

It's a small world Monastery

Manfred was on that trip with Ken and I. Ken and I drove from Manchester to Manfred's house in Germany and collected him and then on from there to Jeno's.

Sadly Ken passed away (cancer) just over 3 years ago but I have very fond memories of the trip.

When you see Manfred next, if you mention we have corresponded over the internet and mention the name Ken Aldridge to him you will put a smile on his face.

Best

The biggest tusks i know of are in Antolia in TUrkey. you get biggies when they are driven but to get absolute monsters you can go out with a night vision during the full moon period and get monsters the size of buffalo

100 kg approx (101)
In Swiss the normal boar is 70/90 kg, in Ticino the big is 210 kg shot in 2003.

If you look in the SCI book many of the biggest have been killed in Turkey and Iran. I think the biggest is from Iran, I would have to check.

I always wonder why in the USA people always refer to the feral pigs as being "Russian boars" as if that is the apex of trophy quality. I believe that Russia does not have even one entry in the top 50 and may not have one in the top 100.

It would make more sense to suggest they were Turkish boars, Or maybe "persian boars" I doubt that the Russian boars have any better genetics then those from Poland, Romania or other Eastern European areas.

Why is it that the middle east has such huge monster hogs? They are not hunted? They have a better diet? Maybe the countries are so poor nobody ventures into the mountains to hunt them?

I wouldn't expect many in the Middle East to eat the flesh of pork.

I was in Iran (USAF) just before the government was overthrown and got a chance to see some of the countryside --- we saw wild boar that looked as big as ponies.

JJ, I would be careful with drawing conclusions based on SCI record book entries - which is what I assume you are referring to with "top 50 or top 100". The SCI book is largely unknown or disregarded in Europe. So the only entries you'd find there would be from travelling US (or, less prominently, international) hunters, who happen to belong to SCI, and who happen to believe in self glorification through record book entries... (OK, I know the last statement is a bit provocative, but there is an element of truth in it). There are LOTs of excellent boars taken, which are never even considered for entry into said book.

If you are really looking for a scoring system widely used in Europe - although I doubt a record book is kept - it would be the CIC system. A CIC gold medal score is generally considered very attractive here. In contrast, not many people here would bother to have their trophies scored via SCI.

Boars are normally scored on the basis of tusks. So if you simply look at scores, it is quite possible that you are right, that boars from Eastern Europe score as well as boars from further East. I could not prove or disprove this one way or another. What is however generally accepted, is that weight and size of boars tend to increase as you move further east. It would be rare to find a boar weighing 200-250 kg (dressed) anywhere, but they exist and are taken in Russia, Belarus or Ukraine. In Eastern Europe, such a boar would be a sensation.

Turkey is a good destination for boar hunting no doubt about it, as is Iran - although associated with problems for US sportsmen these days. But if you are after a BIG boar in terms of body size, you would likely be looking to go to Belarus, Ukraine or Russia proper. In fact, the very biggest boar live in Eastern Sibiria, but hunting them is a gamble due to the terrain, vegetation and lack of hunting infrastructure.

Perhaps Russia, Belarus and Ukraine are not traditional destinations for travelling US sportsmen, but it would be a mistake to overlook these countries out of ignorance.

Here is a picture of a nice piggie from Belarus (linked from the website of a hunting agency: http://www.westfalia-jagdreisen.de/ )

I doubt this one would go 200 let alone 250 kg, though. But who is to know...

As Bill stated, the Islamic countries have little tradition for hunting boar - given the religious status of that animal. Turkey, Iran and Pakistan spring to mind when the talk is of Islamic countries with good boar populations. If boars are not shot young, they have a better chance of growing old....

Agreed with the assessment of Russia, however the sportsman of the USA don't in general know about CIC or the geography of genetics that big boars come from.

many of the pig hunters of the USA only know what they hear and don't study these things about what big even is. When they shot a photo of "hog zilla" that is nothing more then a farm animal and claim it to be a wild boar. It's a joke. The Media and even National Geographic then sensationalize this and make it sound real.

A true wild hog does not weigh 1000 lbs and have huge floppy ears!

You are completely right!
The greatest wild boars in the Far East in the region Ussurii Taiga (Sus scrofa ussuricus)
One of this wild boar trophy -had a SCI Major Award in Rino 2009. - Tusks with 27cm. Was taken from Mr. Jon Shiesl (Anchorage).
I believe , that the problem with the hunting in this region - this territory isn't enough popular among hunters
from Europe and the USA. The hunting is very expensive because of very difficult and expensive way to this region. The hunters from the USA still there is possibility to reduce delivery cost if to use flight through Seul/Korea to Vladivostok. The hunters from Europe have no such possibility.
But those, who hunted there on wild boars, shoot very good wild boars.

Belarus is the very good huntig adresse for a wild boar, red deer, and european moos, driving boar hunting too...
Especially for those hunters who wishes to shoot very old and thick wild boars for smole price.
The boar with 20cm. tusks will be cost 600-700Euro. Smiler

I think Denmark and France both allow bow hunting but any archery hunting is rare no matter where you are in Europe. Most countries don't allow it at all.

The funny thing I found after hunting in the midwest, They have seasons for Archery,Muzzelloader and firearms. During firearm season you may hunt big game with a shotgun with slugs or a handgun but not a high powered rifle.

I have hunted six countries in western Europe. For the most part a high powered rifle is the only legal weppon. Go figure.

Archery works for these big boars, this one was quite large and only travelled 50 meters with a sharp razor head through the chest. Shot at 25 meters.

Yes for the American hunter pigs are great fun with a bow.
My favorite weppon for wild boar is a double rifle like my original post but when a friend of mine asked me to cull a sick sow off his hunting area in Florida I had a great expireance with a longbow even though the sow was sick and small.
