Dave,
Stylish!

Kiri,
I'm hopelessly overcome-by-events in the middle of the hunting season - no time!
Thank You so much for an superb weekend of great company & Good Shooting!!!
Yes, I'd serious doubts about that Fallow Doe @ 40 meters; although like all great hunting companions you came to my rescue w/Top Predator, Claret Dabbler & Nigel. We (you, actually) found it; goes to show that there's alot of Global hunting & shooting experience available when you ask (remember you told me NOT to go into the ravine! Although we'll not discuss the previous # of Telephone Post Lengths at the shot previously). Not one country Corner's the Market on finding downed game, personally I was running out of Tricks after a futile 50 minute search.
Encumbered by a freezing weekend (-3°C, look at the frost in the afternoon on all the photos!) a fantastic job of getting the Birds off the ground!
A couple of Fallow Haunches at a slow Cook & a Beer was delicious after a long day - Yum-Yum!
Thanks again!
Cheers,

Kiri, my shot on the fox was an absolute corker, you and Amir would have never caught up with him.

Fallow BuckDistinguished.... Very kind.
I just got back in from a morning in the snow.
Only six of us and a couple of beaters made it to the shoot so we had a quick couple of drives with the hope of three or four brace to share before xmas. The first drive yeilded a dozen nice birds to the asembled guns and there were a few surprised faces at the end who weren't expecting the birds to play ball in the snow,(me at the front of that line).
A dozen birds out of the iron pond and three more out of the big wood, which usually needs 20+ beaters to work, and we decided to call it a day.
It's days like today that prove that the bag isn't important to make a day memorable.
I'll see if I can get some pictures pp but it was so cold the LCD screen in my camera cracked!!

Claret_DabblerLooking good lads. There is something really special about hunting in this cold weather.
Went up to our Sika patch at lunchtime. It was -12 at 2.00pm. Knocked over a nice Sika pricket at about 3.30pm, had to wade through 200 yards of a heather bog with snow 2 feet deep in places to get to it. Thought I was going to have a heart attack dragging the brute back out through the heather and snow.
Feels great now.
Kiri, will you be in Ireland between xmas and New Year?
Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they are not out to get you....

Fallow BuckHey mate,
What you need is a kiwi who says "gee it's just a fallow I'll carry it up the hill..." (swap fallow for Sika). TP's been a bit quiet since he got back. I hope Amir's stories didn't scare him too much!!
Doesn't look like I'll be over between Xmas/NY though. I'm hoping to get out for some woodcock action if I can but I think I've probably left it too late to get the permits issued. Early Jan might have some free time. What you thinking?

Claret_DabblerKiri, unfortunately I didn't have a convenient Sherpa to carry the beast out. Stalking conditions were nearly impossible, deep snow, absolutely no wind and very cold. Spotted him standing across under a tree at the far side of the bog. Had to shoot standing off the sticks, there was no way to get closer or prone.
I would forget about woodcock over here for at least the next 3 weeks. The cold weather shooting ban is in place and it won't be lifted until the New Year.
Nigel and I have taken a small day down in Fermanagh on Tuesday the 28th. 60-80 birds for 6-8 guns. Just thought if you were over with the in-laws it would have been a day out for you. We are bringing a bunch of kids with us to beat etc. Just a post Christmas lads day out.

BoghossianGlad to see people braving the elements for some sport. Hunting in the snow is great fun! I also found dragging a lot easier over snow. One hind in each hand and off you go...
19 December 2010, 22:47
Fallow BuckBog,
One in each hand? you shou,d strap one to each foot and ski them down!!
Brian,
I'm putting together our annual species day on the 28th the cold weather ban won't allow us to break the record but it should be fun either way.
I'm tempted to try the last couple of days of the season for the woodcock if I can get away.
