Living Large -- Wiebe Take Down .500 Jeffery (Lots of Pictures)
I am truly living large. This is my latest acquisition. A take down .500 Jeffery built by the master gun builder Duane Wiebe. This rifle along with my .500 NE double will be accompanying me to The Dark Continent in October. It is a peach to shoot too, accurate, feeds like a teenage boy, easy on the shoulder, etc. Enjoy the pictures.

Elephant . . . is there anything else to hunt? A .510 diameter 535 grain bullet clipping along at between 2250 and 2300 fps ought to get 'r done!

I know, I really had my heart set on a .378-700 Tonto Totonka Beltless Magnum with a 1-in-84 twist but had to settle for second best.

Damn the "flaws"...
This is a major extended pinky rig.
Cycle it 1,000 times at the speed you would with a jumbo in sights and see if it misfeeds any rounds.
If it is 0 misfeeds for 1,000 cycles it would give me confidence.
Anyone ever see what their misfeed ratio is?

Tomorrow at the club, after a round of polo, over crumpets and tea, the gentlemen and I at the club will discuss the misfeed ratio question that you have posed.

I've shaken Mike's hand, and shot with him ... extended pinky my eye.. the man is simply the best off hand shot I've had the pleasure to hunt with .. with the possible exception of Rob ..

I think Rip was infering the superiority of the 500 on the rigby case in terms of no rebate.

It is the most gloriously appointed piece I have ever seen.

Seriously, it is set up perfectly for my tastes:
German Claw mounts with peep on rear base!
No open rear sight blade on the barrel to snag my hand's hasty grab and go.
And every other bell and whistle worth having!
Absolutely marvelous!

Gives even my redneck pinky finger a "schwing!"

If only it were a Magnum Mauser M98 chambered in 500 Wink Mbogo, then I could live with it.

Excellent plan to keep those 535-grainers down to 2250 to 2300 fps in the standard M98.

I have become enamored of the same bullet in the 500 Mbogo at 2600 fps, in a CZ 550 Magnum. hilbily

That looks like a very nice rifle.

Are you going to use 535gr bullets or 570's in it?

So far I have using 535 grain Woodleigh softs and solids. That is the plan for the time being. I have shot the round nose softs, still waiting on protected point softs to see how those do.

It's just a superb rifle. Best of luck on your hunt.

In my .500 Jeffery, I just use the 535 grain bullets too. I never saw the need to shoot anything heavier.

Absolutely stunning rifle. My 500 Jeffrey feeds Woodleigh softs, Barnes TSX's and banded solids, mixed and matched perfectly. I'm sure yours will be smoother, faster and better not to mention better looking.

Congrats on a great gun!

Congratulation with this rifle here.
Its an exciting rifle in all aspects, with many details and a finish that Duane has done to perfection. You must be a demanding client knowing what you REALLY wanted. You could never have been settled with anything less. patriot

Mike, thanks for posting the photos. The rifle is a real looker.

What is most interesting to me is that Duane built this rifle for his own use on dangerous game. I think when anyone with Duane's knowledge and skill builds a working gun for himself, the rest of us should sit up and take notice as to what's there and what's not. The other thing that is interesting to me is that Duane alone built this rifle - right down to the stippling and engraving. Not many guys can pull off that trick.

I don't get along too well with 500 Jefferys but I can't wait to see you at the range with this one.
