Stripped it right down, it was very dirty! My brother retired it a while back after the scope smacked him.
Took 4 sessions with Wipe-Out, but I prevailed! First sprizz came out the end solid dark purple.
The cloth looked bruised with black & blue colors. Another sprizz over night and two more the next day.
Barrel looks great! I was very suprised and quite pleased. I thought for sure it would need a new one.
Have to dig the front mount screw out, it broke when disassembling the rifle, and the thread cap went missing,
it'll look funny when I try it out.

Going to try out the 300 Grn Accubonds.

I found a set of 378 Weatherby dies today for less than 40 $ .. I may get them just so I have an excuse for building the rifle .....

If I build a 378 Whby , I,m going back to Kruzof Island and hike in 7 miles inland and sit waiting on this certain rise for a buck Sitka Black tail to walk out on this certain deer trail and stop at a certain tree to rub the velvet off his horns and I will shoot him right behind the shoulder from 400 yards away .. Then I will run down to it and start processing it . and If on my way out I bump into a big monster brown bear I will get as close as I can to it ,25 feet should do and I will shoot him in the center of the chest and get out my skinning knife .................. Just like I said I would in 1987 !!!!!!! I think I,m gonna go get those dies ...........

You guys shooting the 378 Weatherby have my respect. After reading Art Alphin (designer of the 500 A-Square and 577 TRex) describe the recoil of the 378 as something he never hoped to experience again, I am humbled. I am going to stick to my light recoiling 500 Jeffrey, thank you very much ...

If you look at the ballistics of a high-BC 270gr Barnes or 260gr Accubond in the 378, it is absolutely incredible. Makes you want to do whatever it takes to tame it with weight, brake, and stock design just to be able to hunt with it. I had Charlie Sisk re-stock mine in a McMillan Safari Express stock, add weight in the stock where needed and still maintain balance, and use the factory Accubrake remounted on a Pac-Nor Match barrel. It shoots groups like my 22-250, only with bigger holes!

+1, but I'm sticking to my 404. Worst I've felt is a 458 Lott from the bench, and I imagine that's nothin but a skeeter bite as compared to the 378.

Dang,

My fist 378 weighed 10 lbs abd was not that bad to shoot, no brake but it weighed enough.

My next one is in pieces at Tip Burns place, it will weigh about 9lbs, and have a 27in barrel and it will be unbreaked too.

I will repeat the 378 is not a man killer!

Biebs, why shoot 260's in the Wby, The big WBY should only be fed a diet of 300 grn bullets Smiler

My brother had to have it and I wanted a 416 Rigby. So he, bought the 378 and I'm still waiting for the 416 Rigby.

This isn't a "regular" 378, NO, idiotic, exuberent me had to have a 378 Improved. If at the time, I had a 1/2 an ounce of comprehension I would have realized, the 378 case is pretty much maxed out as is.
After that exercise in futility, I gave up on "improving" any cartridges. (before that was a 257 AI, 30-30 AI & the 375AI. while each are very good, there's a factory offering to trump each of them)

This time, I'm putting on steel slotted bases and PRW rings.

At the time 7828 was a great performer, what are you guys using now?
Like 505ED says, it should be 300 grainers.

505ed, The great thing about the 378 is it's versatility....no need for a straight 300gr diet, although that is certainly the best all-around. I was playing around with the 260 & 270 high-BC bullets to create a flat-shooting cannon that carries a load out well past where most loads lose their ability to cleanly take a Moose, Elk, Eland, ad Wildebeast.

For a 1-rifle safari, load the new 350gr bullet used in the Norma PH series in the 378 for Buff, then the 260 or 270 for all Plains Game. Or a good-old 235GR Speer at probably close to 3,400fps. Yikes!

Just got in from plinking. 215 primer with 100 grns of IMR 4350 and 300 grn Hornady bt. I got an average of 2820 fps. (still haven't killed my Chrony)
With the brake on I took a few shots, for sighting in and such, then got up to adjust the Chrony. (mounted on a tripod) When I bent over to see if it lined up with the bench, my nose started pouring out a runny mucous.
I thought what a fun way to clear the sinusses. As I was able to breath much better afterward.

Great minds think alike! I've done exactly the same ... mine will be a Ruger No1 with 28" barrel profiled to give a weight around the 9-10lb range. thumb It'll be a 'play toy' for launching 260gr AccuBonds fast ... real fast.
Cheers...

375 Chey-Tac
Anyone tried it?
Supersonic to almost 2 miles!!!

For a typical .375 Chey Tac chambered gun, shooting 24.30 gram (375 gr) Lost River Ballistic Technologies bullets (claimed G1 BC = 1.02) at 930 m/s (3050 ft/s) muzzle velocity, the supersonic range would be ≈ 2230 m (2440 yd) under International Standard Atmosphere sea level conditions (air density ρ = 1.225 kg/m³).

Improvement beyond this standard while still using standard .375 Chey Tac brass is possible, but the bullets have to be very long and the normal cartridge overall length has to be exceeded. The common .375 Chey Tac 292 mm (1:11.5 in) rifling twist rate also has to be tightened to stabilize very long projectiles. The use of such a .375 Chey Tac based cartridge demands the use of a custom or customized rifle with an appropriately cut chamber and a fast-twist bore. An example of such a special .375 caliber extreme range bullet is the German CNC manufactured mono-metal 26.44 gram (408 gr) .375 Viking (G1 BC ≈ 1.537 – this Ballistic coefficient (BC) is calculated by its designer, Mr. Lutz Möller, and not proven by Doppler radar measurements). The .375 Viking bullet has an overall length of 70 mm (2.756 in) and derives its exceptional low drag from a radical LD Haack or Sears-Haack profile in the bullet's nose area. Rifles chambered for this wildcat cartridge, with a cartridge overall length of 119 mm (4.685 in), have to be equipped with custom made 762 mm (30 in) long 203 mm (1:8 in) twist rate barrels.[10]

For a typical .375 Chey Tac chambered gun, shooting Lutz Möller’s 26.44 gram (408 gr) .375 Viking bullets (claimed G1 BC = 1.537) at 870 m/s (2854 ft/s) muzzle velocity, the supersonic range would be ≈ 3090 m (3380 yd) under International Standard Atmosphere sea level conditions (air density ρ = 1.225 kg/m³).

I've only shot mine 5 times. It was a light load from the nosler book. Once with the break and 4 shots without. I know it will kick more as I speed it up. My 460 is nicer on the shoulder but pushes me back more. The 378 is as light as my 7mm.

..
.
. . A 375 CZ 550 would be the easiest for me .. . My 458 Lott CZ would feed the ammo fairly well . S if I had things opened up it would zoom pretty quick . . Possibly the best way to go would be a 416 Rigby action CZ with a custom barrel ..Which could go as long as 28" and be made to look somewhat like a 425 Westley Richards . Have a long shank left on in case the barrel had to be shortened , Kind of like RIP's 395 Impi Tatanka ....the number 1 wwould be oretty great also..

I have to admit that my 9.3 Ashley (RUM Wildcat) Rem 700 kicks way harder than my 458 Lott RSM does. I have chrono'd 250grn Nosler BT runing out at 3150fps (before I bought Quick Load and realized I was running 75k psi whoops Frowner This rifle weigh in at 7.75 lbs on a good day a kicks me off the bench. Its the only rifle that has scoped me in the head thus far. I think once you go over 2800 fps with 250grns of lead things get ugly. I've pushed the 286grn NP's out at 2850fps and they too are wicked. I'd love to have a 378 Weatherby and might convert a Ruger 375 H&H RSM some day but for now I'll stick with the big pusher's like my in coming 500 Jeffery.
