Got a steal of a deal on a nicely sporterised P-14. The ears have been machinied off, and it's been D&Ted for a scope and the Redfield reciever sight. I have a 375 H&H and 458 WM, so I'm thinking something 40 caliber. A 416 Ruger or a 416 Taylor would be my first two choices, with a little magazine work a 416 Remington would be an option. If I wanted to go retro, a 405 Winchester would be a simple conversion, or perhaps a 404 Jeffey. So many Rifles... So little time John in Oregon

For a big action, you might think big and do a 416 Rigby for a 40 cal would be my choice.

A 404 Jeffery is hard to beat. Easy to shoot and superb reputation for getting things done! Cliff NRA Life Member CMP Distinguished Rifleman NRA Master, Short and Long Range

If you want 40 calibre with punch and reach, then the 416 Rigby is your choice. You can handload the new 416 blue-tip, boattail 350 grain bullets to 2800+ fps. That makes a fantastic, one rifle 'walk the African bush', and wouldn't be too shabby for elk, either. Only a 5" drop at 300 yards with 3" max arc. The 416 Ruger/416 Rem are nice, but they give up at least 150 fps to what handloaders can do with the Rigby (basically = 416 Weatherby ballistics). For brass, Hornady produces 416 Rigby that is only $1.50-$2/case. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

Oooh! I'd go for the .404, too, but agree this action will handle some real bruisers. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

If it will handle a 505 Gibbs go for it! You already have the little stuff covered lol ... Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness"

Actually I have a 20 Bore that launches 1040 grain cast bullets pushed with 90 grains of IMR 7383. At under 9 pounds it's punishing to say the least. John in Oregon
