OK, I suppose I'm asking for trouble with this question, but what do you think about a big bore with a detachable magazine? Specific big bore = 375 Ruger, or maybe a 416 Taylor.

SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA ...... WRONG

WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN AND YOU WOULD NORMALLY TOP UP THE MAGAZINE YOU CAN'T !!

I HAD A BROWNING WITH A MAGAZINE - YOU COULD ONLY PUT ONE INTO THE MAGAZINE FROM THE TOP. BIG HELP WHEN YOU HAVE A NASTY BUFF OR LION
AWAITING YOUR ATTENTION.

AS FOR MAGAZINES IN BIG GAME RIFLES , YOU CAN STUFF EM !

I'm not uncomfortable with the idea of a DGR with detachable magazine. I think Styer or Sauer bult a DGR with the spare mag in the stock butt. I think the M700 African DGR is a detachable magazine. I've shot IPSC with detachable mags, I've shot three gun matches with detachable mags (except shotgun), and if I had to defend my life today it would be with a handgun with detachable mag. I have friends that safari with a DGR Ruger No.1.

Balance and reliability and liking the rifle are the keys.

My 425 Express has a blind magazine and hasn't posed any problems to date. How a person would get into a predicament where multiple magazine loads will bail you out is beyond me.

My every day DGR is an F.N. made Mauser with 3 and 5 round detachable box magazines. Fastest reload out there- if you have spare magazines (and I do)

I'm not opposed to detachable magazines, I've just never seen a rifle with detachable magazines that I liked. I'd like to try out the one Mr Heath has.

I think it boils down to looking down the barrel or looking at a 'puter screen, and whether you are blowing smoke or been there/done that.

I want the simplest, most fumble free shooter I can find, then practice long and hard...but then I have a higher sense of self preservation than most armchairs.

Any large cal double rifle will do nicely with a PH behind me I can trust with the same...a dependable CRF mauser in both hands will do fine also and the sense and ablility to keep it topped off.

You want to experiment with detachable magazines...you go right ahead...but you won't be hunting with me...you're an accident waiting to happen and I don't want to be anywhere close to you when S**T happens.

My question is...how can you call a rifle with a detachable mag a DGR????? That to me is an oxymoron to the max.

I've seen too many fumble fingered pecker pounders loose their s*** at both ends when the bad happens and getting a mag screwed up when in the sh** can happen to the best of us.

On my first cape buffalo hunt I borrowed a 416 Rigby from a friend. It was an H.S. Precision and had a box magazine with the release inside the trigger guard.

When I fired the first shot at the first buffalo, the recoil caused my trigger finger to hit the release and the magazine became loose. Never again. I duct taped it in for the rest of the hunt.

I have the CZ 458 Lott and it holds 6 rounds so I don't need a detachable magazine. They are nice if you need them.

I think with the Mauser 03 Africa, having a detachable magazin, it shouldn`t be a problem.
Have friends hunting in Afica with that rifle without any problems.
But I think, there is no need for it.

Couldn't that have easily happened with a floor plate release inside the trigger guard?

I've used detachable magazine rifles since 1974 and have never left one at home, lost one, or had one drop unintentionally.

Some can be reloaded through the top others can't but it's faster to take an extra magazine off of a holder and reload the rifle than it is to stuff cartridges through the ejection port.

Isnt it tough to do a AFRICAN CARRY with a detachable mag and wont it dig into your back on a sling when your humping the Veldt 10 miles a day? Makes carrying them by holding em around the action tough too unless you have VERY big hands! Oh well I guess at the Range it just doesn't matter!-Rob

I've heard some Ruger RSMs tend to empty their magazine's on the ground when floor plate pops open also.

It depends on if the magazine sits flush with the bottom of the stock, many of them do.

Oh short detachable mags! I guess they only hold 3-4 rounds then. Must be tough to execute a Emergency mag change then with ol MBOGO closing in on you. Lets see, shoot, miss, shoot three more times and miss each time, find mag release, push button, drop mag, insert new mag all with the gun still pointing somewhere in the vicinity of Ol MBOGO. Nice! Probably takes a fair amount of practice to master. kinda sounds like a drive by in the wrong direction!
Think I'll focus on working the bolt and shooting straight!-Rob

I agree but it would still be easier than stuffing shells one at a time through the ejection port.

African Carry is for those who haven't discovered a sling!

The advantages of a detachable mag was what sold many a culling officer on the Manlicher .458!

Imagine this in 416 Taylor, or 416 Ruger, or 458 WM. The pictures don't show that it has a bright fiber optic front sight, protected by the hood, which is venilated to let in more light. Also not shown - a neat item is the option of using NECG ghost ring rear sight which attaches on the rear receiver bridge. This is the medium magnum receiver - the same one they use on their so-called "Ultimate Hunting Rifle". It's overall much lighter than the big magnum receiver. The magazine holds three rounds.

505 Gibbs, 3 in the mag, 1 up the tube. If you need more than that you either need to learn how to shoot, you're elephant culling or you pissed off a dinosaur ...
