Guys and Michael 458,

You gentlemen that are doing a lot of shooting and testing the large Meplat projectiles. I have noticed some of your data published on velocities at the barrel and 20yards away and noticed a 100FPS drop. I realize these type projectiles have a BC of about "0" but a 100 FPS drop in 20 yards at about 2000 FPS?? What is the drop in velocity at 100 yards?
I realize the use of these gems is for up close and personal shooting through tough animals but what if you get a second shot at 100 yards? Do you aim over their head?

Probably 350fps-400fps at the most.

However don't be dismayed As intimated by garrett a flat meplat projectile at even 1400fps beats most big game rifles for penetration....Wink

Michaels comprehensive tests would appear to verify this with only 14" penetration for the 577 nitro with round nose solids.

Therefore you could stick to a 44 magnum with flatnose solids- far less recoil than the 577Nitro original loads, probably similar penetration- and 6 shots Big Grin

Hi EZ

You are correct, many if not most of the big meplat solids will loose something along the lines of a 100 fps or so at 25 yds. In calculating the BC of some of these that comes to around .205. I always sight in my rifles 1 inch high at 50 yds. This actually puts them pretty much on the money at 100 and about 2 inches low at 150.

If you start that dance at 25-30 yds, he won't get past 50, just don't stop shooting. The closer you start, the quicker you end it! I love to start at 25 or less if at all possible. Work'em over pretty good starting there, there is no way they can get to 100!

You mean like these? (.800" meplat, 129.7 grams)

Here's what Tolley claimed their ammo did back in the day. Just remember to sight in your 4-bore 6" high at 50 yards to be dead on at 150!
