411 Steyr or short 400 Whelen

MoreBS411 Steyr or short 400 Whelen
Now that I know that a short action Model 70 will fit a near 3" cartridge. I am thinking of a 411 Steyr. Very simple to make. Or, and a shortened 400 Whelen. Shorten a fire formed case a long 1/16 or a short 2mm and it will finish 2.370" Just right for an X bullet. Either a 240 or a 270.
Well, what ya think?

dpcdGo with the one that is easiest to make brass for and will feed best from a bolt action; clearly, the 400 Whelen in any length, wins. I do admit I have no idea what a 411 Steyr is but your picture looks like it has a rim. Why bother with that in a bolt action?

ramrod340The Steyr should leave you with more net capacity.
The Steyr has a rebated base
As usual just my $.02

dpcdOTOH, why a short action? I need to find out what a 411 Steyr is. Ok, the rim is an optical illusion in the picture.

MoreBSThe Steyr has a .504 base and a .495 rim. New bolt is $65, is cheaper than rebating all the rims......and......I want both! In a Short Action.

dpcdIs brass easy to get; as I said, I know nothing about it. I lead a sheltered life.

Cause they are a 1/2" shorter, and not many folks have a big blaster in a short action.
Maybe I can start a new trend! Big Bore Ulta Light Mountain Rifle.

capowardYour solution is a 405 WSM! This is a cartridge that Winchester should have released years ago...

They have done the 416WSM, but have not seen the 411WSM. One nice thing about it is, you can always load it down. Tiger or a pussy cat!

matt salmA Win 70 short action mag box for the WSM cartridges is 3.050" internal length. I built a lot of 284 variants on those with excellent results.
Shoot straight, shoot often.

dpcd405 (or 400) WSM; now, I know that that is and I can build either of those with tooling I have.....
But I would put it on a long action!

376 steyrI believe the 376 steyr case has about 10 more grains of powder capacity than the '06 giving it the real ability to do the 5.3 kj energy for dg legality. There already is a 416 Agaard that you might want to research.

MoreBS416 Aagaard, forgot about that one. Not much taper, and no one make dies.

dpcd - if using a long action, why not go for the .405 WCF and be able to use 210, 300, and 400 grain bullets as needed/desired?
Brass from Hornady and lots of available bullets.
Naturally, I am unaware of the intended use of the potential rifle being speculated upon, so I may be way off.

boom stickI have fantasized about a 411-376 Steyr for years. It makes the most sense on a Mauser imho with a 3.23” magazine length. On a short action, might as well go 411 WSM.
20 August 2019, 07:15
MoreBSUsing a Model 70,wsm or block removed from a 308ish, you can get a 3.0" mag. Just log enough for the Steyr and a Barnes X in 268 or 238 grain.
As far as the 405, the reamer is almost done on my 405B.....Belted.Long action

boom stickMBS, what are the dimensions of your belted 405?
14 September 2019, 00:06
AtkinsonI believe dpcd made some good points..My main objection is I don't want any 40 caliber that wont shoot 400 gr. bullets, if Im going to shoot just 300 gr. bullets give me a .375 or .338, preferably a .375 whatchamacallit.

jeffeossoso, as a grumpy old cuss ... that .2" longer or shorter than standard can be VERY expensive. (either cases or actions)
and as a dyed in the wool wild cat'er i get ya.
now, for REASONS either
1: just do a 416 ruger, and be done with that
2: shorten a 416 ruger to 51x and run with that .. can likely still use ruger dies
there are THREE ways to get 376 steyr (one of my fav rounds) brass
1: buy hornady brass when/if you can find it
2: buy a lathe and turn down belt mag cases to make the following
3:10,75x68 brass
yes, i get it .. Michael made a teeny-tiny 416 off RUM brass ... even shorter than yours...
the 416 ruger obviated my 416 accrel -- its a damn good round
and knocking off 14.5mm wouldn't hurt anything
17 September 2019, 20:41
wildmansixYou may want to look at the 416 Express (350 rem mag necked up to 416) (Can make from any standard belted magnum case) I built one on a ruger 77 shot action and in a 22 in barrel have 300gr Barnes at 2510fps
24 September 2019, 07:36
MileHighShooterHmm. I've thought about this one myself. Could be a very useful and effective cartridge if done right. I also have a 400W and a 376 Steyr that is being built by Z1R. So bullets and brass are already on hand
My thoughts on this, would be a Yugo 98. Pretty much perfect length. Or like already stated, a M70 SA which with the mag block removed is pretty dang close to the Yugo in length. I think 3.1" OAL is achievable. The M70 platform would be easier for finding an aftermarket stock.
The 416 Aagard, I believe, hits 2200 fps with a 400 gr bullet, so no reason to think 2150 is not achievable. Packed in a short rifle, this could be an excellent DG capable carbine-ish all weather rifle a bit behind Michael's b&m series but without the high cost of having to go through SSK and trying to find the finite supply of wssm donors
If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

boom stickHow about the 400-350 Rem Mag?
400 Whelen performance in a short action?
There is the 410 B&M as well.
26 September 2019, 23:03
376 steyrWould a necked up 338 or 300 ruger compact mag(RCM) case be worth looking into. The 300 RCM may have more powder capacity than the 338 RCM case.
28 September 2019, 02:16
JFEIf unprimed brass for the Weatherby 6.5 RPM becomes available that could make a decent 400 cal wildcat for use in a regular length action. It’s apparently based on a lengthened 284 case.

Not a bad idea at all. From what I gather, the 338 handloaded is pretty close to the 338-06 so one could assume a 410 RCM could be pretty close to the 400w. Not as much capacity as the WSM or short RUM *a la B&M* but no rebated rim. May have just capacity with the right powder to chase 2150 with a 400 gr bullet, if its a Wwodleigh, seeing as they're shorter than A-Frames
