I am planning on a little rifle project next year in .505 Gibbs. I like Golmatic Magnum mauser action since my .416 Rigby is made on one....but how about the Granite Mountain Magnum Mauser action??. Is there anybody out there that knows if there should be any difference in these two actions..or are they all "top of the pile"??. Natually I could choose the H&W action$$$$$..but its gonne be a working gun not a showpiece! DRSS: HQ Scandinavia. Chapters in Sweden & Norway

.505 Gibbs made on a Mauser 98 action is not a double rifle Jens! However, there will be easy for you to find high quality .505 Gibbs brass late next year

From what I have looked at, Waffenfabrik Hein has some of the nicest actions going. I have a quote in for a .505 Gibbs at this very moment. "They who would give up an essential Liberty for Temporary Security, deserves neither Liberty or Security." ---Benjamin Franklin "SIC SEMPER TYRANNUS"

Is your preference and opinion stated, based upon the fact that one is a M-70 clone and the other a M-98 clone? One comes finished from the the Maker (Hein) the other does not... Both are machined and top quality actions by all accounts, it may be a preference for action type that dictates choice. Certainly when comparing pricing, head to head, Hein is more competitive and Hein is working on a M-98 ...more choices is a good thing

Steve, I am wondering where you gathered your basis for that conclusion? I don't have the basis to make a decision, directly. It basically boils down to preference, at the money you are paying Ryan for your 505, right? j opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? ..I know..but I have had this cartridge(505) in the collection for many years..and last week I couldn`t resist of not having a .505 Gibbs.......Do you know the feeling ?? If everything goes right a double rifle will show up before the .505 I haven`t seen the waffenhein M98 Magnum yet but I know that the Golmatic or the Granite Mountain action duplicates the original as close as close can be. I wonder when Norma will put out a "jaktmatch" in the .505Gibbs? I know the Jefferys .500 is more powerfull, but the criteria for my african battery is catridges made before WW1. The GMA magnum Mauser action is very well designed and excellent quality. But to make a top quality rifle, it will need a top quality gunsmith to perform final fitting/polishing/feeding. In other words, you don't just screw a barrel on and drop it into a stock, or the result will not be best quality. Also, the GMA uses a .750" bolt body diameter, which is larger than the original Mauser but much preferable for big rim cases. Hein is offering an action with approx a .800 bolt body diameter which would be very tempting to use for a Gibbs.

I have a quote to Hein right now for that very reason. I am also requesting a quote from Ryan and a few others as well. After my RSM, I think I'm getting snot in my nose. Not knocking CZ or anything, but there is a HUGE difference in the two! Thanx for fax That´s the kind of info I need I saw some years ago in a Guns&Ammo a gunreport on Granit Mountains .505 Gibbs and if was a nice looking gun...... Can the granit Action be ordered with the real "flagsafety"??. It just look so wrong with a Model70 safety on a classic mauser(sorry) What is the homepage for Granite?? DRSS: HQ Scandinavia. That, and it looks like a bigger version of my beloved .416 Rigby. Just think Jeffe: If I wind up with a .505 Gibbs, not only can I join the "+.50 Club", but the Rigby might actually become my second favorite caliber, under the .505. You can get so much good advice and information on the Forum that you can get vapor lock (brain freeze). But here is another suggestion: try Karl Hans Ritterbusch. Here is his contact info: Ritterbusch-Seehausen@t-online.de ritterbusch@jagdewehre.com www.jadgewehre-ritterbusch.de His website is a knockout and the prices of his actions were a little cheaper than H&W. Good luck with the project.

Jens, GMA offers their rifle with M70 safety only, but there is a way to convert to flag because I read about a guy doing it. But I do not know the details.
|
One of Us |
The GMA can be set up with the flag safety, no problem. The 585 that I barreled and test fired has a flag safety. I've done the barrel work and the feeding and function work on about 150 GMA barreled actions since April 2002. I supply their extractors and FN style cocking pieces without the v shaped groove in the bottom. 585 GMA barreled action on the test fire sled, look closely, that's a flag safety. That action is the GMA,ARV good for 416 Rigby, 505 Gibbs, 585 GMA. It's a big action .750 Diameter bolt and 1.500 inches wide on the front ring. She's big and the rifles built on her are deep and wide. When stocking one of these the stockmaker wants to make the 416 and 450 Rigby as trim as possible. When going to the 505 Gibbs and 585 GMA the stockmaker wants leave a little bit more size to the stock. Next project on deck. 500 Jeffery on a GMA standard plus, which is a smaller action with a 1.420 diameter ring, makes a sweet 500 Jeff. not too big not too small, but just right. TIMAN

Does anybody know if ritterbush sells just their actions?

HiTiman! I most say that your action for your .585 look awfull nice I believe that action could be the strongest candidate for my .505 Gibbs! I natually consider when a GMA action cost $4000 I shall add 37.5 % in import taxes/duties which translates into $5500 + S&h to denmark! I should be able to get a Hartmann & Weiss for around $6000, but the Golmatic magnum mauser costs me only $4200 and since this is a budget rifle(working rifle) I have planned only to spend $10-11k. But I `ll talk to my gunmaker later here this summer get his qutation for the work!!!!. DRSS: HQ Scandinavia. Chapters in Sweden & Norway
