Bill/OregonJeffe: Almost hate to think of the ARs as magnums, since they don't have no stinking belts ...

Tough call Jeffe, but perhaps it is time I introduce you to a friend who IS head of R&D at a rifle manufacturer. Check your PM box.

The name "Magnum" as apllied to cartridge cases, came from the wine industry. It only refers to large volume, as in a Magnum of Champain(sp?).

.366torqueSLAM has an image conjuring sound to it. I like it!!

Hog Killerjeffe, I do not like acronims on cartridges. Makers/designers name are fine by me.
So, 416/458/470/500/550Jeffe would be all right by me. As you are the man who designed these rounds.

Bent FossdalHola, Jeffe!
I do not see anything wrong with AR or Express. They are already established rounds, renaming would just be confusing! Like, does anybody know what RIP's cartridges are called today?

boom stickif we are "marketing" to the outside it would make some sense to change the name. if it is an exclusive a.r. club thing it does not matter. we can make the outside world jealous or give it a chest beating name to lure in more users. i do like express...just add it to the name 470 a.r. express....and when el jeffe sells out to a manufacturer and becomes wealthy you can just drop the a.r. and all will be o.k.

I agree. Any mention of the "AR" rounds here on the board and most people know what you are talking about...but to the laymen they may associate the AR name with the AR-15...thinking 458 SOCOM.
You could always take the Lazzeroni route...convert them to metric and give them goofy names.

RIPYep, I groaned too at the thought of renaming cartridges.

For the record, these won't change anymore, the RIPoff line of cartridges (may still be too confusing for the unsophisticated):

.308/300 Lapua RIPoff
.375/.338 Lapua RIPoff
.423/.338 Lapua RIPoff
.458/.338 Lapua RIPoff
500/470 Mbogo RIPoff
That is it, my Big Five. There will be no more of this idiocy for me.
The RIPoff family of cartridges, all derived from the .416 Rigby case and all working through a Rigby-sized action, so common today.
Brass as good as it gets too: Lapua and Jamison.
I better add that list to my signature, lest y'all forget, again.

yup, cause everything's bigger in Texas, right?

But the No Shitter takes the cake. Just think, with an all American name like that, you could reach out to the fringe hick and redneck crowd!!

"Hey Jimmie Rae, you take a gander at that new 500 Texan down @ the Wal Mart?" Rock on guys.

Bent FossdalOne can always call them ARC's, Accurate Reloading Cartridge, for those who think of the AR-15.
But the .550 Express can not be renamed, please! Neither its big brother .550 Magnum. Their simple names will make them survivors!

Geez, that's a dumb question, Bent.

It is the RIPoff line, but I am not ripping off H&H.
