Hello all, I have a buddy that's always complaing of how bad his 300 win mag kicks so I though for fun, I would load up some heavy loads for my Marlin 1895 45/70 and let him shoot it with the stock recoil pad and then see if he still thinks the 300 mag kicks bad. Does anyone know what weight bullet and powder combination will produce the most recoil. I'm not sure if max loads for the lighter 350 grainers would kick more or if the 400 or 500 grainers will be the ticket. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

for some factory ammo try some garrett hammerheads or grizzly cartridge +P+ ammo... i have a marlin stock recoil pad (oxymoron) and know what you are talking about...+P+ loads are fun!

do a search on max 45-70 loads and you will find yer answer... BOOM

I think loads at the upper end of the chart for the 400 or 500 grain bullets would have the most recoil. But a real stiff load with a 350 grain bullet might do the trick.

I find, on average, lighter bullets going faster produce more felt recoil (ie; 300WM vs. 338WM).

You might try one of the online recoil calculators. For me, 460gr cast bullets at 1750 out of my GG kicks as bad or worse than 350gr out of my rigby at 2600. Gun weight has alot to do with it plus the recoil pad on those GG are a joke. Load up some heavies to max in the GG, and have him hunch over a bench that is way to low for him, ouch!!

For me heavy bullets are the worse.......Why would you want to strain your Marlin......Have him shoot a single barrel shotgun with magnum loads.....That will help put the 300 into perspective.....===================When you get up to the top end with the 45/70 it will buck the action open sometimes.............Not a Good Idea !

I think there are some other forum members in georgia too, maybe you all go to the same range, get him behind a 458 Lott or such. Big Grin

I had a No. 3 in 45/70, some of the higher velocity lower weight loads would hurt, but it was a light gun and the no. 1's and 3's can be loaded a bit higher than the lever guns (different load data available actually).

Elmer Keith liked 53.0 grains of IMR 3031 with a 400 to 405 grain bullet. I do too. Substantial but not unpleasant in a 7.5 pound Marlin 45-70, does just over 1800 fps.

In my young and stupid days I tried 52.0 grains of RL-7 with the same 400-grain bullet, in the same rifle: not recommended except as a "proof load" for the Marlin. Gets close to 2000 fps and loosens every screw in the Marlin.

The shotgun comments reminded me that I do have a Mossberg 835 that really kicks the crap out of you with the 3.5 inch heavy loads. Thanks

I'm performing the same experiment on myself with varying IMR3031 charges behind a 350-gr Hornady FP. My original goal was to find a load that would group well, but I may decide to just pick the highest that I care to tolerate and piss on the group size.

It's been my experience that the heavier the bullet the bigger the recoil.
