For the guys who have guns making over 100lbs in recoil, How? My guns best load to date is 113lbs recoil and when shooting that load my second finger hits the trigger guard real good. My shoulder is fine and short of gluing my hand to the stock what can be done. I see some use gloves so I tried that too. Still getting whacked. Does grip angle make a big difference? I have some time to think while my lumpy finger gets better. Thanks WOODY Everyone is allowed an opinion, even if its wrong.

I have had this problem. The shape of the trigger guard is a big factor. A 470 Merkel just about brakes my finger. A 470 Krieghoff I don't have a problem. Fill in the space behind the trigger guard so your finger slides over it and not into it......Tom SCI lifer NRA Patron DRSS DSC

Kebco sells some 'rubber baby buggy bumpers' that snap on to the rear of the trigger guards to prevent or at least slow down the dreaded swelling middle finger syndrome. I bought some but haven't tried them out yet. This might help out someone. My Searcy swats me unless I hold far back. NRA Life ASSRA Life DRSS Today's Quote: Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. The trigger guard on my .500 used to bite me and I just took some contact adhesive and stuck sone neoprene rubber onto the inside of the guard at the front and the outside of the guard at the back and find it works a treat.

While test firing my .505 Gibbs my middle finger was hit while I was shooting from a standing bench and leaning over and into the rifle. When I was in an upright position or fired the rifle while standing I had no problem. Bryan

I don't know what gun you are shooting, but on many of them you can change the trigger guard or add material behind it to change the shape. It doesn't take much to be effective. I have tried the cushions that can be added, but they never worked for me. One other thing you can try, if it is possible, is to reduce the diameter of the wrist. This seems to allow those of us with smaller hands or short fingers to get a better grip position. This worked for me on a .458 WM........Tom. SCI lifer NRA Patron DRSS DSC

New England Custom Gun sells a rubber device that attaches on the inside of the trigger guard. It works wonders. I had a similar problem with my 500 NE. This device solved the problem.

My trigger finger has some pretty big bone distortions from all those years of getting wacked! I just put a bandaid on it and start shooting. I had to give up shooting double rifles for this very reason, though this problem arose from my trigger finger accidently being mashed off at the first joint. I was OK shooting the rear trigger on the doubles but when shooting the front trigger my second finger was placed right against the trigger guard which caused extensive bruising. I tried everything to no avail and finally had to accept the facts and part with my doubles in 300 H&H, 9.3x74R and 500 Nitro. I went to a bolt guns in .375 H&H, 416 Rigby and .505 Empire. I have not had any trouble since making the change. It's been a hard pill to swallow because I loved using doubles. I tried to get Merkel and Griffin & Howell and a couple other smiths to convert my guns to a single trigger but could not get anyone to do the job.

Point one: analysis of analytic geometry and particular anatomy will solve this problem for you. Or, you could just try a few variations on the theme, and see which ones work, and which don't. Best is an open grip angle that will put the trigger(s) farthest away from the flying bird finger. But what works for one will sometimes punish another. Back to point one. I occasionally have this problem when shooting my 505 Gibbs. I can solve it by wearing golfing gloves, as they improve grip significantly. Also by making sure I squeeze the grip tightly (even without gloves) it prevents the rifle moving back through my grip enough to avoid contact. Unfortunately I still occasionally forget to squeeze the grip tight enough (often when shooting timed competition events), and the grip will twist out of my hand and belt my middle finger with the trigger guard. It hasn't happened for a few months and I still have a bit of a lump there.

What rifles generate 100lbs or more in recoil? Other than the ones with wheels. Or we bolt to the decks of ships. I'm sure they're some. I'd like to see a list. So I know what to steer clear of. The biggest thing I've ever killed is an elephant, and I didn't need to suffer 100lbs of recoil to do it. As far as I know.

My old CZ 505 used to whack my middle finger hard when shooting 600 grainers at 2250... My 600 OK has never done this... Have fired it several times unbraked with 900 grainers over 2000 fps.. well over 100 ft lbs of recoil... I chalked it up to better trigger geometry of AHRs set up Vs CZ factory... ______________________ Sometimes there is no spring... Just the wind that smells fresh before the storm...

I'm not trying to be difficult. I've shot a few rifles that are normally considered to be big bores and I don't think any of them have hit me with anything approaching 100lbs of recoil. Color me skeptical.

okay .. now undertsand that there's 2 important measurements of recoil .. ft-lb and velocity .. have you shot any of the rounds i listed in my examples above? a 458 lott is usually round 75lb, in a 9~ gun. a 500 jeffe is just a hair over 100 505 gibbs, about the same ... "normally considered bigbore" .. let's say the minimum for 100 lb is about 535gr at about 2400 in a 10# rifle .. big bore doesn't mean 100-ft-lbs .. it is in the super big bore rounds, in human portable weights.. so, what big bores have you shot? here's a calc tool ... http://www.handloads.com/calc/recoil.asp opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? The biggest rifle I've ever shot was a .458 WinMag. I don't think it kicks any harder than my .416. By big bore I mean what they say on this forum. Anything larger than a .366 is, to me, a big bore.

IMHO, I think the felt recoil of a 12ga shotgun with full dram loads is worse than my 375 H&H and the 450NE and 458 Lott I shot last weekend. As others have said, fit of the gun is critical. Martin

you are correct. the winmag doesn't kick very much different than a 416 rem .. 50lbs or so .... in terms of bigbores.. that's single A high school baseball vs the red socks opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? The .416's a Rigby. And you are correct. If I were to guess the recoil energy I'd guess it's about 50 lbs. But it's putting out 5,000 foot pounds out of the muzzle. Which leads me to believe that any rifle that's going to hit me with 100lbs of recoil is going to produce 10,000 foot pounds of energy. If it weighs the same.

its non-linear .. a 577 ne, in 13.5# gun is 7000ftlbs, and about 103 ftlbs recoil .. a 375hh is 4000ftlbs energy, and like 40 (from memory) lb recoil .. like pressure and velocity .. non-linear .. so, a 500 jeffe .. a pretty standard round, is also about 101 ... about 6800 ft-lbs ME ... like i said, a 458 isn't a big deal .. its kind of a pop gun, really, in terms of really big bores .. after 10 rounds of 500 jeffe, or 550 express, you can shoot a winamg all day ... and a 375? comparatively, nil recoil .. and of course this thread is about 100lbs of recoil or more .. heavy mediums are FUN to shoot, too ... in british reconning, the 416 is a heavy medium .. opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? My Rigby was about 65 lbs recoil and my 460 was 85 ish and my 510 Wells is 113lbs. This is not with a max load. I just put about 3000 grains of lead in the butt to see what it will do and that balances the gun a little better. I will try different gloves and some rubber bumpers first but might just have to get a new stock. The smiths who built this gun said the MPI CZ 550 stock could work very well for my weatherby. It looks open in the grip. I'm glad to hear others have had this issue. WOODY Everyone is allowed an opinion, even if its wrong.
