First off I want to appologize for not telling anyone sooner, I found out that I will be moving in March and I can't really support this like I had hoped to do.

I had hoped to leave California (where you can no longer buy a TC Contender or Encore after Jan 1, amongst a host of other problems) mid last year and it didn't happen.

So thanks for the support and I am sorry I got everyone excited about it only to leave the glass half empty.

cheers,
Seth

Well, if you'll let me fudge the numbers a bit and consider a 9.3 a BigBore...I'm in!

9.3x62, .375 and .450 Bushmaster for my entries.

Rob, a California big-bore shoot? I can see it now....lead-free bullets only, that have to be dug out of the backstop and recycled. Catered meals must be Vegan only. By law, chairs and refreshments must be provided to all anti-gun protesters in attendance. At the conclusion of the shoot, the range must be covered with 8" of sterile clay soil, and monitoring wells installed. And of course, illegal immigrants must be provided free guns and ammunition to participate. Sounds like a ball :-)

As long as no Blasers are allowed, I'm interested.

I'm still working on my 458 but the 375 is always ready to shoot.

Ridgecrest isn't exactly what I would call "Southern" California, if you know what I mean. How about Angeles, right off the 210 Freeway near Pacoima, just outside LA. They allow big bores up to 50 BMG, and the rifle range goes out to 600 yards. See:

http://angelesranges.com/layout.pdf

They even have private ranges that can be rented.

I shoot at this range quite a bit. Very nice and well run.

I didn't know they had private ranges to rent. That's cool.

I spoke to the club managers on the way home from work, they are game.

I figure Ridgecrest is central to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Reno, Northern California and anyone else that wants to come.

The traffic coming to Ridgcrest will be easy.

You can camp on BLM, stay in a hotel or if you are retired military stay at the Navy Lodge or Billeting or park your RV on the base.

I am game to get this going, but I figure since I am doing the ground work on it, it needs to be where I live.

Boobs, er…, I mean Biebs, is using his wit here but it is also a prophecy on things to come. The Massachusetts Environmental Police will investigate shooting on your farm land to determine lead in the soil.

PS. He forgot to mention the genter neutral rest rooms for the GLBT among us and the queer Pink Pistols of San Francisco. I'm glad I have more yesterdays than tomorrows.

We have two rifle ranges right next to one another (couple miles, but they are the only thing on that BLM road).

The range I have in mind was built with NRA endowment funds and has gongs to 600 yards.

There are no services, he said we could bring out a BBQ. Or we could start it at 8am and someone could make a run to Pizza Hut for take out pizza at lunch.

There is a portapotty.

The other range is better financed, but not set up to handle a larger sized get together.

I am going to talk to the other range and see how they feel. We'll make that choice once I talk to both of them.

I remember it as a strictly controlled range that always had screaming, frantic, arrogant, authoritative "range officers" running it. I remember that paying to shoot my 22LR rifle included the cost of the target. That was because the targets were already posted at 100 yards and we didn't get a chance to go down range to view or change them. The first time I went there I didn't have a spotting scope and I had no idea where I was hitting. Later, I took a scope but after several rounds without target changes allowed it seemed pointless.

Current rules suggest their centerfire area is only a little better. They have a 600 yard range but they only allow you to shoot preplaced steel targets beyond 300 yards. You can place paper targets out to 300 yards on weekdays and to 200 yards on weekends - no further. What good is shooting 600 yards if you can't use, replace, and examine paper targets? For all intents and purposes that relegates the centerfire range to 200 yard shooting on weekends and 300 yard shooting on weekdays. I remember shooting centerfire rifles there and waiting for timed ceasefires. The number of shooters and the times they were ready for a ceasefire didn't matter. We had to wait for the timed ceasefire even if we had all finished shooting! Go back and read my second sentence.

I like your idea, Wyoming. Perhaps we could have a day at the range and then meet somewhere for dinner. Wait, in California it is illegal to have firearms in your car unless going to or from a shooting activity. Maybe a BBQ isn't a bad idea after all.

As far as centrally located... We could always use my clubs private range.. Your welcome to bring anything you legally own to shoot We can even have a Bbq on site or catered event Bbq.

Less than 25 mins off the I-5 from Magic Mountain, that always makes a good bribe to the wife & kids with this one.. If your able to make a go of this, feel free to contact me and we'll work it out..

Gents:
In Alaska we will go on our 6th year pif double shoots. They began at my home but I'm 100 miles from most of the shooters and only room for 1 or 2 shooters at at time. Now, we shoot at a range east of Anchorage, rent and reserve a covered area of 6 or 8 tables so all rifles are on display and many can shoot at one time. We begin at 10, shoot for two hours, fire up the grill and have burgers, dogs, chips and soda or water.

All are invited and the regulars bring food and drink for all. Everyone chips in and splits the cost of the range. New comers love the double rifles and it is good to see old friends.

I download my larger doubles so a green horn does not drop a heavy kicking rifle and I will now single load my larger doubles as twice my .600 Wilkes has doubled on two shooters. Also,I get tired of newbies saying, "I want to touch off a 4-bore and really feel some recoil" without a word of the quality, age, history, or craftsmanship of the vintage doubles.

All in all it is great fun and we have now two shoots per year--May and July. We don't shoot in August or September due to hunting season and October to April is cold and snowy (although two years ago it snowed on our May shoot).

Example:
I bring a grill, propane, plastic utensils, paper towels.
another brings soda
another water
another burgers
a seconde also brings burgers
another brings dogs
another brings condiments, lettuce, tomato
others bring deserts

Never a complaint and it is 100% positive.
Cal

Nope, you can have guns in your car without going to and from a range or hunting. Just like every other state they have to be locked up if you go in the gun-free school zones.

I've been to that range too and have declined when my pals invited me. I much prefer to head out a bit farther to the desert with 3-4 friends, for quite a few reasons.

Frank, that used to be the case, only transporting to/from shooting activities, but I just looked it up and, thankfully, it has changed.

Also, California does not require shotguns or rifles to be "locked up" for transportation.
quote:
https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/travel
Nonconcealable firearms (shotguns and rifles) are not generally covered within the provisions of California Penal Code section 25400 and therefore are not required to be transported in a locked container. However, as with any firearm, nonconcealable firearms must be unloaded while they are being transported.
But Federal law prohibits possession of a firearm within 1000 feet of a school (18 U.S.C. § 922(q)), locked up or not.
