Super Light Big Bore 5 pounds!

SnellstromSuper Light Big Bore 5 pounds!
Saw this auction on G B, ( no horse in the race for me ) but I can't imagine the recoil of a .458 Lott in an 18" barreled 5 pound rifle. I think the thing would jump out of my hands. Wish they would post a picture!
Any takers?

Rodney H.{500Jeffery}Don't care too much for the Remington rcvr but I am interested in what kind of velocities can obtained from an 18" barrel. Anyone experiment with this much? R.

Hog Killer500gr bulleet, with 84gr powder, making 2200fps, in a 5 lb rifle. Equals,
128 ftlb of recoil @ 40 fpsI will pass on that. Bet jeffe will too.

congomikeMany years ago when I worked in a gunshop a gent came in with a MkV Wthby in .460. He had put it in a slimmed down thumbhole stock, and had cut the barrel to 16 1/4". He said that he carried it when on horseback in case of a bear encounter. He did claim it was quite unpleasent to shoot.....I had no desire to try it, even though he offered....he seemed like an honest person so I took his word for it.
I would like to shoot the one talked about here though.....now I am older and proabably less wise!

Hog KillerThis "stunt gun" needs to wind up in Saeed's collection. So he can let his buddies shoot a "little rifle". About all it is good for.
For anyone else to want it, they are a few cards shy of a full deck. Reguardless of the action it is built on.

FjoldI was at my gunsmith's a couple of years back and he had a 6.5 Lb, 378 Weatherby that someone had asked him to install a brake on.
Brake or no brake, I was not interested in shooting it.

gumboot458....Bet SAFARI KID would enjoy it......I would prefer it to a 12 lb 458 lott. They get carried lots and shot little.......It may not be fun to shoot but with its Scout proportions it would be fun to have around ...Esspecially on a CRF...

Michael RobinsonIMHO, there is no way a rifle like that would be "shootable."
First, it would kick the snot out of you no matter how hard you held it, and you would want to hold it hard.
Next, as a result, you would develop the flinch from hell.
Third, because of its light weight, short barrel, the fact that you would want to put a death grip on it, and the inevitable pre-flinch and flich-induced jitters, it would be impossible to hold steady and shoot well.
It's true that somebody thought it was a good idea and built it.
But it's also true and not surprising that it's now for sale.

congomikeI think it would be good for one shot, after you have convinced yourself that recoil wouldn't be that bad, that you wouldn't develope a flinch, that you would not have a "pre-flinch", etc.....after that first shot though, you would never trust yourself again!!

Also, that rifle could be sold/traded to 20 different owners, and probably be shot less than 20 rounds!!!!
8 1/2lbs is as light as I'd go on a 45Mag with a well designed stock. Even then, I'd pull out the sissy pad and limit bench testing to about ten rounds/day. Power is wonderful but Safarikid can have my helping of recoil.
Congomike, perhaps that gent with the sawed off .460 just loaded a bunch of 2400 or some other muzzleflashy powder and relied on the "thunder and lightning" for protection?

23 April 2007, 08:18
SnellstromI think that by the time you got it sighted in from the bench and did any load development you would be ready to sell it!
A dream to carry and a "flinchin' nightmare" to shoot!
Just my humble opinion.

Have Satterlee build a Ti Mauser action for you and then build the rifle of your dreams! A 6 lb 458 Lott ought to be doable.

Wow! I truely don't know what to say, other than, you'd probably take George Forman's (in his prime) best shot and ask him if he's going to hit you yet!

300H&HKSTEPHENS,
I was thinking the same thing...
The 4 bore pistol...
maybe detached cabeza?
I'd seriously like to see video of those lightweights being fired.
Any vids safarikid?

boom stickmaybe not full 4 bore loads...but then again what are "plinker" 4 bore loads...but like i said...shove it in its mouth and pull.
24 April 2007, 07:47
bigdoggy700Safari Kid, you might as well shoot the 600 nitro pistol. It has a 17" barrel with the brake and weighs 7 1/2 lbs. It is bigger and weighs more than you4 505 rifle will. I will let you know how it shoots, me and Kamakazzi are shooting it on May 20th. It probably kicks less than those featherwieght monster rifles of yours. I thought I was nuts for getting it, glad I have company on this forum.

gudlifAh, guys, I'm not a regular on this forum. But I have been to hell and back with a similar gun, not quite as frisky perhaps.
I had a smith build a .416x300 WSM for me. I use sensible 350gr bullets at ~2300. It kicks, but is doable.
He had built a bolt gun for himself using the .300 WSM necked up to .45 and used 400gr bullets. He wanted me to try it. A 5.5 lb gun with 16-1/4" barrel. He loaded his rounds to about 2200.
I wear glasses. I weigh 145 lbs. I fired that sumbid four times. Kinda makes you want to take up golf. No thanks. Broke my glasses, bruised my cheek, bloodied my nose, vision was out of focus for about 15 minutes. There are limits.

300H&HThe most I was ever terrified of a gun was trying to sight in my dad's 30-06 w/ a metal butt plate at around 12 y.o. for elk season.
I can tell you it took a lot of concentration to jump from an 300 H&H to bench a 416 Rigby and not flinch.
To tell you the truth, a 577 T-Rex felt better because of the pad. I guess it's a bare nuckle/gloves scenario.
Either way, safari kid, et. al. must have somthing I don't. Maybe I'll pick a fight w/a bouncer at the clubs for practice...
