I've been thinking about a rimmed version of the 416 Taylor. Maybe get some Starline 45-100 2.6" cases and just run into a 416 Taylor size die. Then put in a double rifle and load to around 40k. It should give the same bolt thrust as a standard 12 ga. Looking in Quickload it should be able to get a 400gn Hornady SP up to 2050fps and stay at or below 40,000 psi. I don't know if it is accurate or not. Here's some of the numbers Quickload spit outfor a 23" barrel with pressures of 40k: RL-15 60gns 2034 fps RL-19 71gns 2066 fps H4350 69gns 2042 fps Does anybody have any chronoed light loads that might match up to this? Another thought is a 416 Rem rimmed with a 2.8" case with a 400gn bullet at 2150fps. The Starline 45-100 2.6" case is only $1.15 each. A&B 416 Taylor barrels are $90 from Midway and Lee dies are $27.50 So is a .416 400 @ 2050fps enough gun? thoughts?

;;;;This will no doubt start something but I say 4000 ft lbs ..,,,A 400 gr bullet@ 2150......Were it I , I would go with the 3"...With all the expense ,I would want to have the power and if I felt like it .down load away from it ........That Cape Buffalo fight in the Nickudu files is a good example of needing all the power you can handle well......But what does it tae to build a double rifle ????????????? .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Why not use the commercial .500-416 NE? Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

The 500-416 has more bolt thrust than a 12 ga. My thought was to find something that would exert the same force on the frame as a 12 ga and still produce a respectable velocity with standard bullet weight for caliber. And if possible have reasonably priced reloading supplies. If I remember right, I think the 12 ga max pressure is around 14,000 psi(I don't remember where the shotgun saami max list is). I think the 500-416 max pressure is 42k. If I'm wrong on any of these, please feel free to correct me, and if you have a link, that would be even better. Cartridge Chamber pressure, Base diameter, Bolt Thrust 12 ga shotgun 14k 0.827 2394 lb 500-416 NE 42k 0.58 3532 lb 416 Taylor with 45-110 case, 40k 0.505 2550 lb **found this site for pressure, don't know how correct it is** http://www.leverguns.com/articles/saami_pressures.htm

OK, of course. Well, I would go with the longest version. The 458 WinMag have showed what happens when the velocity is dropped to 2000 f/s. 2150 is supposed to be so much better, but I have only a second opinion on that, as I have never tried it. But no smoke without fire, eh? Anyway, pigs and ele's are quite different cups of tea, so what is enough gun depends on the game. Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway
