trophyhunter5000The .550 Express, .550 Magnum, & .585 Nyati are not fifty caliber cartridges......

BuliwyfYes, .500 caliber and up.
I should have written my question with more clarity.
25 January 2007, 00:23
boom sticki dont like belts or rebates ( the 500 jeffery has a huge rebate that is hard to get to feed and feeding issues is not something you want in a d.g. gun) and i think above 510 is needless so bolt action wise that leaves the 505 gibbs, 500 ahr (hard to get and soft brass i hear), 500 mbogo (to be) and the to be 500 a.r.
the gibbs takes a monster action, the mbogo and ahr take a large action and the 500 a.r. can go on m98's!!!
i would love a 500 mbogo and 500 a.r. but i would pick the a.r. i think over the mbogo because 535's@ 2300 is all you need.
thanks to jeffeosso this is the soon to be 500 a.r.
no belts no rebates 338 lapua or 416 rigby parent brass. even rip has to love this one...20 thou shoulder per side like the 500 mbogo...it could be called the mini 500 mbogo

25 January 2007, 05:05
RIPOther: 500 Mbogo
The 500 AR is very cool.

25 January 2007, 05:12
boom stickit should feed like a hungry hippo with a single stack...
i thought it would get the rip seal of approval

25 January 2007, 05:26
RIPFinally a good use for a .375 Ruger M77 Hawkeye African/Alaskan: rebarrel to 500 AR with a vertical stack.
Might as well. No .375 Ruger ammo.

gumboot458Where did you find out about the Swarofski scope lnb????? For me it is the 500 A-Square.........I,m supprised so many people voted for the 12.75x73 Schuler.....
.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....
25 January 2007, 09:38
jeffeossohow can I vote on this?
i built the first 550 express, 550 flanged, and working on a 500 AR, and I have a 500 jeffe, and will have a 510wells...
"all of the above"

25 January 2007, 12:43
Bent FossdalIt would not really matter, as long as the rifle around it was properly made. Neither is easy to find ammo for, and all have their issues. All would give 2100 with a 570 grs bullet, that would be my goal - no 535's for me.
But I might end up with a .550 Express, it is modern, efficient, have a normal name - and fits a VZ-24! How cool is that!

CollinsWell, you asked, AND under the constraints this is my choice. (and I actually own one)
Styer HS-50 (50 BMG)
For over .50 I like the .585 Nyati.....................a little bias as I own one, it's a power house !!
25 January 2007, 18:36
BuliwyfPC,
What action is your .585 Nyati bulit on?
25 January 2007, 20:36
RobgunbuilderIf its .50 and over pse add the .600OK and 12 GaFH to the poll as there are at least 15 of them out there.-Rob

Idaho SharpshooterI'm sticking with my 510KX for now, 510 Wells minus the irritating belt...at least in the wildcat division.
The 505 Gibbs is still the factory round to go with if you reload, and I cannot imagine anyone actually BUYING!
enough factory ammunition in any of these entries to be proficient. Manson has shipped my 550 Gibbs reamers, and Hornady reloading dies have already provided me with a case-gard 50 full of FL sized brass.
Great thread...

If you do a search on the 600OK or 600 Overkill you should find a lot of information.
This is a thread on the 12 Gauge from Hell.25 January 2007, 23:36
BuliwyfOk. Thanx.
Will do.

tomo577boom stick - i'm surprised at you . everyone knows only a competent riflemker ( of which there are few ) can make a 500 jeffery feed flawlessly.
harald wolf of belgium has probably built more than anyone , including jeffery and his rifles feed and function perfectly.
all these other useless "experiments" being foisted off on the unknowing and unsuspecting are a shame.

i dont like the 500 jeffe for the feeding and rebate issues...no feed no shoot

SAFARIKIDSince it has been clarified to 500 and UP....I vote my new favorite BIG Bore Bolt gun,the .600OK (Overkill) which is .620 bore size and hurls 900gr projectiles up to 2400fps!I own 2 of them! "Go for it"! : )

700 nitrothis is a quote from dans big bore artical
quote"A 700 Nitro Express was taken on a recent elephant hunt in Botswana with Safaris Botswana Bound (saf.bots@info.bw), and the following report was provided by Graeme Pollock.
"The gun was too heavy for the hunter to walk the long distances sometimes required in Elephant hunting…. The first shot on the Elephant was a frontal shot which did not hit the brain and did not knock the Elephant down. The shot was apparently high due to a hang fire. The second shot was lung heart and the elephant again did not go straight down but it did not move much either before going down. The 1000g bullet seems to have not much more noticeable knockdown power than the 500 or 470 NE 500g round." end quote.
i carried the rifle fine but i did admit the rifle was damn heavy and i sure as hell wont be doing that again.
the bullet struck low becuase the rel 15 literaly at my styrofoam wads there was a dry chemical reaction.......i fixed this by placing a piece of paper between the wad and the powder i did not have any furthar problems.
i brought this rifle on three furthar hunts with out any problems what so ever.
the bullet broke one of the vertbreas at the rear of the neck paralizing the elephant i then shot it in the chest and it rolled over.....
i will say this as much as i like the 700 nitro the loads for it are far to finicy and to much of a pain in the ass to relyapon........
so from this point forward im going to stick with 600 nitro express and under.

GrandpasezIf talking 50 cal upwards, where a stopping
rifle is needed, and stuff that might stomp
you, due to 700NE type ignition problems.
then go with 12GA FH, 700 HE, 700RGB,
with good priming system. If the heft is
a problem then small primer realm I like
550 Mag, 600 OK, simple straight cases.
By the way I can make an OK case in 3
minutes from T-rex basic brass on my case
spinner/lathe and a swage die..Ed

ScottSBuliwyf,
You may know him better as 500grains.
26 January 2007, 18:02
BuliwyfYep, I have knowledge of 500grains.
Thanks Scott.
26 January 2007, 18:25
trophyhunter5000If I had to choose just one I’d have to go with the 600 OK.
If you are going to go big go all the way…..
But I could never own just one; that’s the problem with big bores isn’t it…….
They are kind of like Pringles potato chips…once you pop you just can’t stop…..
Dan, excellent article by the way…..

BuliwyfGreat voting results!
The 500 Jeffery & .505 Gibbs neck and neck! I was surprised about the number of votes the 500A2 was getting until I read 500grains article.
What is the reason for the 500J, 500A2, & .505G getting separation from the group?
27 January 2007, 01:45
boom sticknostalgia for the 500 jeffe and gibbs, economy for the a2
the 500 a.r. will be cheaper still and should do 535's or 570's at about 2400 according to jeffe...we are still working on brass right now.
570's @ 2100 is all you need though...the rest is recoil
27 January 2007, 01:52
Buliwyf570 grains at 2100 fps sounds plenty great to me.
Do scopes hold up to this type recoil?
27 January 2007, 01:58
boom stick570's @ 2100 is 500 nitro express ballistics...
you would use open sights for these kinda rounds since d.g. hunting SHOULD be under 50 yards...
yes scopes will hold up...the right ones
27 January 2007, 02:01
BuliwyfI guess Leupold 1-4 and 1.5-5 and Fixed 2.5x are the right ones?
27 January 2007, 02:17
boom sticki think a leupold 1.5x fixed is enough...
27 January 2007, 02:29
500grainsPutting a scope on a .500 or a .505 is not a good idea unless your forehead is made from plate steel.
27 January 2007, 02:32
boom sticka mans got to learn somehow
